Limit in the number of scraps in a (big) project ?
by Xavier Robert 09 Oct '25

09 Oct '25

Hi all, I am maintaining a quite big structured Therion database with more than 700 caves (https://github.com/robertxa/Topographies-Samoens_Folly) I am using Therion 6.3.3 (2025-01-06), TeX Live 2015 (MetaPost 1.999). Following a new session of exploration and surveys, I added some scraps in this database. I have no problem to run any compilation of separate caves. But since my last update, when I try to run a Therion compilation for the whole database to build the 3D view of the system (https://groupe-speleo-vulcain.com/wp-content/themes/custom_theme/3d/JB.html) I get an error during the « Preloading the plain mem file » : [...] [4090] [4091] [4092] [4093] [4094] [4095] ! Number is too large (4096). l.296920 beginfig(4096 ); [4096] ! Number is too large (4097). l.296923 beginfig(4097 ); [4097] … and so on… therion: error -- metapost exit code -- 512 I a m not sure, but I think that I have a total of 4102 objects (this is the last number with a similar error ; with a total of 4117 files written in thTMPDIR/). If I run Therion with the -d option, I see all the data.xxxx from 1 to 4102 in thTMPDIR/. The compressed log file is in attachement. I tried to recompile my database after commenting a small part of the database that I did not change recently. The compilation run well. So, I suspect that there is a limit in the number of objects (scraps ?) Therion (or mpost ?) can handle. Am I right ? Is there a way to get rid off this limitation ? Cheers, Xavier

Setting up a Therion ecosystem on Mac
by bruce＠tomo.co.nz 01 Oct '25

01 Oct '25

Mōrena I just offered to help a fellow caver set up a Therion ecosystem on their computer. Only I’m a Windows user, and I just found out they’re on Mac. I wouldn’t even know how to turn on a Mac. So I’m looking for any tips and advice to help ease the process. Here is what looks like software that might be equivalent to what we’re using on Windows: 1. First up Git Git - Downloading for macOS <https://git-scm.com/downloads/mac> . Any pointers on whether to go with Homebrew, MacPorts or XCode? We are likely to be fans of git-gui and gitk. 2. I find icon overlays a necessary feature to provide general situational awareness. Such as TortoiseGit – Windows Shell Interface to Git <https://tortoisegit.org/> , but that is Windows only. SnailGit: Git for Finder on the Mac <https://apps.apple.com/us/app/snailgit-git-for-finder/id847260112?mt=12> App Store looks like it is similar. Anything else the comes with icon overlays? Free? 3. Text Editors that have Therion syntax stylers. contrib:externaleditors [Therion wiki] <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/contrib:externaleditors?s%5b%5d=mac> suggests BBEdit and Brackets with stylers by Xavier Robert. Which of these is best Xavier? Other options? 4. Therion. I assume ladislavb/homebrew-therion <https://github.com/ladislavb/homebrew-therion> is the latest, superseding tbe:wiki1 [Therion wiki] <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/tbe:wiki1?s%5b%5d=os> and masox [Therion wiki] <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/masox?s%5b%5d=os> 5. Xpdf. XpdfReader <https://www.xpdfreader.com/> 6. Is anyone running TopoDroid in an Android emulator on mac? Feedback and suggestions welcome. Thanks Bruce

Mapiah v 0.2.18 release
by Rodrigo Severo 26 Sep '25

26 Sep '25

Hi, Mapiah version 0.2.17 was released yesterday at the end of the day but my internet connection is only now allowing me to announce it. Change log for this release: - New features: - Create shortcut to reverse line (R). - When opening files, delete empty areas. - When opening files, delete TH IDs from areas that do not refer to any existing line. - When opening files, delete empty lines. - Help page update. - Snap to grid lines. - Straight line segments line simplification. - Fixed bugs: - Removing XTherion inserted images throwing errors. - Showing XVI parse errors at TH file open would throw because there was already a widget being built. - Files with empty lines (with no line segments) or empty areas (no valid line TH ID) would throw an exception when calculating bounding box. - Infrastructure maintenance: - flutter pub upgrade --major-versions. - Flutter upgrade to 3.35.4. but it had a anoying bug where a failure to load XVI files dialog box was repeatly shown. Version 0.2.18 just fixes it, so get version 0.2.18, which will be available in a few minutes: desktop version available at [https://github.com/rsevero/mapiah/releases/tag/v0.2.1](https://github.com/r… as expected and at https://mapiah.org/webapp/ as usual. Please report. Rodrigo

Customize the line below
by Yann Gardère 24 Sep '25

24 Sep '25

Hello,! Is there a way to customize the galleries below automatically generated with Therion using MetaPost? When THconfig as the actif line "transparency on" "opacity 80 " Such as example: def l_wall_xxxxxxx (expr P) = pickup PenA; draw P withpen pencircle scaled 1.5 dotted ... enddef; I'd like the wall line below to be automatically generated as a dotted line, without having to define it with "underlying" in drawing mode [image: a.jpg] Thanks Yann

Is it possible to reformat output of currentdate tex variable
by bruce＠tomo.co.nz 20 Sep '25

20 Sep '25

I have been using /currentdate to identify in an exported pdf map header when the map was compiled. \edef\tmp{\the\thversion} \ifx\tmp\empty \else %only write version and date if version is not empty {\the\legendtextsize\si\the\thversiontitleA: \ss\the\thversiontitleB \ss\the\thversion} {\the\legendtextsize\si\the\datetitle \si\the\currentdate\par} \fi It takes the system date and format as input. So I was using Windows 10 OS settings to format the date how I preferred it, in the case, d Mmm YYYY. Seems that Windows 11, my new OS does not have the ability to format the system date in manner(s) that I find useful. Is there a way for Therion to take the date provided by the OS and reformat it? Think I recall someone did offer up something a little cumbersome, but it escapes me just now. Anyway, perhaps there is a better way today? (Run Therion in a Win10 VM?) Bruce

I have been asked to produced geographic coordinates of all stations of a centerline by some friends. Does anybody knows how to do it inTherion, Survex or whatever software? Thanks in advance for any help. Rodrigo

KML files
by Graham Mullan 14 Sep '25

14 Sep '25

Is there a simple way of generating KML files which specifically excludes the pins for entrances etc? I just want the centrelines. I know that I can do this by commenting out all the relevant lines, but that's a bit of a pain when your dataset has many dozens of these and you have to go back in and replace them when producing 3d or other outputs. Re: [Therion] Distance between two survey station
by eric georges 07 Sep '25

07 Sep '25

Hello, I'd like to know if there's a method for calculating the distance between two survey station, and also for identifying the shortest path, or even for determining all possible paths. I think this should be possible using the .slq file. thanks Eric Georges
