Re: [Therion] Point altitude/deph, Help !
by Xavier Robert 28 Jun '22

Hi all, I think I have found a trick. The other Xavier led me to the right tracks, thanks a lot ! Finally, this is quite simple with the point altitude, and no need to change anything inside the : - If we use the point altitude only with the option -align, we get the altitude - If we use the point altitude with the options -align and -value [-1004 m] where 1004 is the altitude of the main entrance, we print the depth only for that point (Do not forget the " - " before the altitude of the main entrance), and thus, we do not erase the classic point altitude. The only (small) limits are : * If the main entrance changes, we need to manually update ALL the points that print the depth. But that should not be be everyday, and not a big issue to do that. * the symbology of the two points is the same. I will have a look for a way to modify that and let you know if I find a trick (If I copy the code of the point Altitude, and call it p_u_depth(expr pos, R, S, A), it crashes...). Cheers, Xav

How to calculate the volume of a cave
by Bill Gee 31 Jan '22

31 Jan '22

Hello everyone - What tools can be used to calculate the volume of a cave based on center line and LRUD data? I found an email from Martin Sluka from about 4 years ago describing how to use Loch to export a .lox file in other formats, then run that file through CloudCompare or ParaView. The process looks very complex to me, and besides - Loch does not run on my computers, so there is no way for me to generate an export. As far as I can tell, Survex does not have a way to calculate volume. Could it be done with a KML file and Google Earth? -- Bill Gee

Presenting Mapiah, a multi-platform, more friendly, modern and performant graphical interface for Therion
by rsev＠protonmail.com 14 Dec '21

14 Dec '21

Presenting Mapiah. Mapiah is my take on a multi-platform, more friendly, modern and performant graphical interface for Therion. It's written in C++/Qt. It aims to be as compatible as practical and possible with XTherion. This is the "proof-of-concept" release. It's source code and it's releases files can be found at the projects home at SourceForge: https://sourceforge.net/projects/mapiah/ Please let me know what you think about it, if it has any future, if you want to help. *The name* Mapiah is a international friendly version of the portuguese word "mapear" on the sentence "vamos mapear?" - "let's go surveying?" or "let's go mapping?" - which is usually pronounced [vʌmu mapi'a]. *Multi-platform* Right now we have both Linux and Windows releases as these are the OSs I have access and minimal experience with. Until some Mac user steps up, that's the way it's gonna be. Having said that, the idea is to follow best practices during Mapiah's development to ease the release process on all target platforms: Linux, Windows and Mac. *The C++/Qt choices* Going backwards, the Qt framework was chosen as it has an open source compatible version. It's mature, powerful and seems to take multi-platform support seriously. The first idea was to use Qt Python as the "friendly" requirement could also be applied to the language chosen but in the end I decided to go with C++ because I believe that a C++ application might be more easily distributable across all platforms. *The "proof-of-concept" release* The basic reading and writing functionality supposely is th concept being proved in this release. Supposely because the actual concept I am trying to prove myself with this release is that I can write functional and decent C++/Qt code which, for the time being, is kinda proved. *Functionality* This 0.0.1 release can read a TH2 file, present it on the screen and save it. With an open file you can change the zoom level and write the file again. You should be able to see your TH2 file on screen correctly and the saved file should be functionally identical to the original one. All point, line, area, scrap and XTHERION options should be properly read and saved even if most aren't actually understood/acted upon. *License* This software is licensed under GPL 3 or later. *WARNINGS* PLEASE TEST! DON'T OVERRIDE YOUR ORIGINAL FILE WITH THE ONE WRITTEN BY MAPIAH!! THIS IS A PRE-ALPHA VERSION!!! Regards, Rodrigo Severo

Fwd: PDF output: layers nested?
by Benedikt Hallinger 30 Nov '21

Hello, I currently play around with the layer feature. Currently it is so, that each "select"ed map goes in its own layer, which is fine. In my data there are nested maps however. They get collated into one big layer. I don't know PDF specifics, but it would be very handy to have "nested" layers, i.e. submaps as separate layers in the main layer. If sublayersa re not possible, it would be cool to have an optional option at the export config command to instruct therion to not collate submaps into a bigger layer, but add each map as independent layer. Something like this: ---- therion source ---- map A A1 A2 endmap map B B1 endmap map A1 scrap1 endmap map A2 scrap2 endmap map B1 scrap3 endmap ------------------------ ----- PDF layer list ----- - A + A1 + A2 - B + B1 ---------------------------

Get shortest route
by Benedikt Hallinger 29 Nov '21

29 Nov '21

Hi there, i would want to get some advanced statistics regarding lengths in a very big cave (130km/Hirlatz). Basicly i want to supply two stations and get the following data for the shortest path: - length of shots - cumulated height for shots going upwards - cumulative depth for shots going downwards - optionally it would be cool to be able to somehow visualize the route in aven/loch, or in a therion map output Is this possible already?

Therion] Get shortest route
by Bruce Mutton 29 Nov '21

This was discussed in 2008 in Therion circles. https://www.mail-archive.com/therion@speleo.sk/msg02037.html To be really useful, the user should be able to specify multiple stations, with the algorithm finding the shortest centreline distance along the centreline network that passes through all of the specified points. Outputs to list as noted by Benedikt below, pdf and aven/Loch models. I don't think so. Someone was working on it, but I guess it didn't come to anything as that was 2016: https://lists.survex.com/pipermail/survex/2016-October/002082.html Cheers, Olly _______________________________________________ Therion mailing list Therion(a)speleo.sk https://mailman.speleo.sk/listinfo/therion

Export centerline and/or stations to SHP without th2 files
by עמרי גסטר 28 Nov '21

28 Nov '21

Hi everyone, I have a survey with coordinates at the first station but I don't use th2 files. When I export to loch file, It works perfect, I can see the model in the correct place together with the DEM and surface image. When I try to export to SHP or kml I get empty layers because I don't use th2 files. What I don't understand is why the centerline / splayes / stations layers are empty as well. Is there a way to export to SHP / kml only the data from the th file? -- Omri

Hiding cross-section symbols
by Bill Gee 28 Nov '21

28 Nov '21

In a map layout, what is the symbol-hide command to not produce cross-sections? I have tried these without success: layout NoCrossSections symbol-hide point section symbol-hide line cross-section symbol-hide section section symbol-hide section cross-section symbol-hide group section symbol-hide group cross-section endlayout For all of these Therion says "Unknown symbol specification". Thanks! ======== Bill Gee

Duplicate pdftex fonts
by Bill Gee 27 Nov '21

27 Nov '21

Hello everyone - This is not really a Therion question, but it happens only when I am compiling Therion maps. I figured I would start here and see if anyone has any ideas where to go for more help. Every time I compile a map to a PDF file in Therion, pdftex issues some warnings. They look like this: pdfTeX warning: pdftex (file /usr/share/texlive/texmf-var/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex.map): fontmap entry for `rtxphvb' already exists, duplicates ignored There are ten of these, each for a different font. The maps that are produced are sane with no visible problems. I looked at the pdftex.map file and, as noted in the warning, the fonts named are in there twice. In fact, dang near EVERY font is in there twice! This warning started appearing after I upgraded from Fedora 34 to 35. It appears on two different computers. So far this is merely annoying. The maps that Therion produces look great, and I have not seen the warnings anywhere else. Even so, it would be nice to figure out what is going on and get it fixed. Has anyone else seen this? Does anyone have suggestions on where to go for help on fixing it? Thanks! ======== Bill Gee
