"\legendbox" "\loadpicture" and absolute paths
by rowena 14 Mar '21

14 Mar '21

Hello, I am using the "\loadpicture" capability in "\legendbox" constructs to include map sections, elevations, etc. It all works nicely on my PC where I am using relative paths to the pdf files. My club has a desire to archive the map data for posterity - ie if my pc dies or I go walkabout, the map data should still be available so that others can add to the maps as they are extended. I would prefer to have the images included using relative pathnames, rather than absolute pathnames, so that future explorers can download the map data and extend it, without having to duplicate my file hierarchy. How can I include relative paths in the \loadpicture functionality? Thanks, Rowena

Mike McCombe's TerrainTool has been fixed and is available again from http://www.ubss.org.uk/terraintool/terraintool.php Download and enjoy. It may not use the latest data but it remains the most straightforward way of adding topographic detail to Therion 3D models. Graham

Scale dependant error when using area fills
by Tom Foord 20 Jan '19

20 Jan '19

Hi all I'm having some problems compiling a project which includes debris area fills. Depending on the exact symbol fill that I use, I am getting strange scale-dependant errors which seem to cause the compiler to loop endlessly until I force it to stop. I originally noticed the problem when using a custom area fill that I made by modifying the standard a_debris_AUT symbol fill. I've attached my modified metapost definition in the attached text file 'a_debris_WUG.txt'. The error occurs for any scale between 1:2000 and 1:4483 (outside of this range the project compiles fine). See attached output log 'Output log - a_debris_WUG.txt'. As you can see, the file seems to loop over and over again. Initially I thought this problem was specific to my custom fill, but then I noticed that I also get a similar error when using the standard a_debris_AUT fill, however this time the error only occurs when the scale is set to exactly 1:2000 (any other scale seems to be fine). See attached output log 'Output log - a_debris_AUT.txt'. Can anyone help with this problem? Thanks Tom

How to "equate" between two caves
by Bill Gee 01 May '18

01 May '18

Hello everyone - I have been working on a multi-cave project for a while. Each cave exists as its own separate set of files. A few months ago - with help from this group - I figured out how to get a single output file that contains all four cave maps. The combined map is generated from a single thconfig file that uses "source" commands to bring in the .th files from each of the member caves. Now we have surveyed a link between two of the four caves. I need to set up an "equate" command so that the two caves actually link up. According to Aven, the gap is about 30 feet. Some of that, I am sure, is due to rounding errors in the GPS locates for the two caves. Based on a message from Martin, I added a .th file which contains a "survey" command. However, that is generating an error from Therion: ========== therion 5.4.1 (2017-04-18) cavern - Survex 1.2.34 initialization file: /etc/therion.ini reading ... done This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159265-2.6-1.40.17 (TeX Live 2016) (preloaded format=pdfetex) restricted \write18 enabled. entering extended mode (./fonttest.tex checking optional fonts csr10 csti10 csbx10 csss10 csssi10 ... Eurospeleo surveying
by Wookey 01 May '18

01 May '18

Eurospeleo is in Austria this summer (Ebensee). I plan to be there. Some of the rest of you no doubt are too. Does anyone know if there are any surveying meet-ups planned? I think it would be a good idea to arrange a session of some sort just to meet up and find pout what people are doing. Anyone got any enthusiasm for something more comprehensive, like practical survey work, or training or otherwise comparing notes? Maybe reporting on the survey/GIS work in the UK (initial meeting next weekend)? Talk abstracts need to be in by 30th Jan so if you want to give talks say so now. Maybe reporting on the survey/GIS work in the UK (initial meeting next weekend) which I am unfortunately going to miss? If there is nothing already planned, I will register for an 'open session' to be scheduled so surveyors can just compare notes and report what they are doing, as we did informally at Brno. Extended elevation page
by Bruce Mutton 30 Apr '18

30 Apr '18

Good morning all I have just put together a Therion Extended Elevations <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/extend> page, having convinced myself that I have almost figured out how to make them work. You can navigate there from the wiki start page <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/start> , via the 'Data Organisation' link. Thanks and apologies to Marco Corvi, for the inspiration and words I have borrowed from his page. Marco, is it OK? It is not quite complete yet (I have a history of not completing projects) however if someone can direct me to the centreline and drawing data for the famous Therion Extended Elevation Control <https://therion.speleo.sk/samples.doc/25.html> sample, then I might remain inspired enough to generate a more comprehensive set of examples. Enjoy your caves Bruce

Hi, I have compiled the messages that appeared not translated into the local languages in Loch. I have added them to the file "loch.po", which I attach. The spanish translation is completed. To translate to other languages you can copy the new lines and translate the messages "msgstr". Evaristo.

Georeferenced PNG export problem
by Evaristo Quiroga 03 Apr '18

03 Apr '18

Hi, I want to export a map to georeferenced PGN. I am using the Xtherion "Help\Calibrate bitmap" function to register a PDF map to PGN, like explain in the next message. https://www.mail-archive.com/therion@speleo.sk/msg02593.html ThePNG is created appropriately, but I have problems with the ".MAP" file. When I execute the command, it creates a good PGN file, but creates an empty ".map" file. When a close Xtherion, the ".map" file is filled with the information. But that information is wrong, the coordinates are 0,0 (look attached file). Wheres is my mistake? An other question, can I convert the background to transparent directly from Therion. I want import the georeferenced PNG in Google Earth or GIS, and want only have the cave survey rendered and see the other layers around the cave. Regards, Evaristo.

***UNCHECKED*** scaling line ornamentation - metapost
by Bruce Mutton 02 Apr '18

02 Apr '18

Thanks Dave I was not clear enough, -Head can have values; both, all, begin, end, whereas Q can be 0, 1, 2, 3, so some go-between is required. I finally looked and found part of it in source file thline.h // tags pre arrow TT_LINE_TAG_HEAD_BEGIN = 1, TT_LINE_TAG_HEAD_END = 2, Presumably somewhere else NONE is set to or implied as zero and BOTH is set to BEGIN + END. That would complete the mapping from the data type that -Head takes as input in a th2 file, to the 0, 1, 2 or 3 that ‘line arrow’ requires for variable Q. I rather suspect I don’t have the requisite knowledge for this, but sometimes I feel the need to push the boundaries anyway! :) Bruce From: Therion <therion-bounces(a)speleo.sk> On Behalf Of Dave Clucas via Therion Sent: Saturday, 31 March 2018 2:28 PM To: therion(a)speleo.sk Cc: Dave Clucas <dave.clucas(a)icloud.com> Subject: Re: [Therion] scaling line ornamentation - metapost (Bruce Mutton) I’m not sure about this but I suspect that it doesn’t involve parsing. It’s likely that the metapost expects a parameter or parameters to be passed to it which it then assigns to the variable Q in its own procedure. It won’t care what the calling program calls it. I think the arrowhead is probably defined within an arrow class (arrow.h perhaps). On 30 Mar 2018, at 18:00, therion-request(a)speleo.sk <mailto:therion-request@speleo.sk> wrote: I notice line arrow takes the special argument -head [both | none | begin]. Somewhere between the th2 file and the metapost arrow definition, the argument -head gets changed to the variable Q that is parsed to the metapost code, that controls which ends of the arrow line get arrow heads. I have copied the code below. Whereabouts is the code that tells Therion that -head is parsed to the metapost definition as Q?
