Bruce Thanks for your explanations. At Sun, 31 Jan 2010 14:24:11 +1300, Bruce Mutton wrote: > It is documented, but on searching just now I discovered it is quite hard to > find. If I understand that correctly, PocketTopo is still completely closed and the file format not documented. Also from reading your comments, the PDA software seems to be quite inflexible (first splay shots, then next target). Since I am also considering going that route, these seem to be severe limitations. Working together with people using PocketTopo, it is quite inconvenint not to have true Therion *.th files with the full set of measurements, but just processed data. It would be great to be able to write a *.top conversion utility, but for that the file format needs to known. Best, Martin

DistoX and PocketTopo with Therion
by Bruce Mutton 13 Apr '10

Hi there I have a Disto arriving hopefully in a few days, and looking ahead I've been tentatively trialling PocketTopo on my PC. I suspect therein lies my first problem. Perhaps it only has limited functionality on PC's? I can manually enter data, but I can not seem to draw passage outline. The Export Therion format does not seem to produce data in a format similar to what Therion normally accepts - after the data it produces some form of co-ords separated into plan and elevation partitions. Most of the survey stations are converted to 10 digit numbers and all of the keywords are in capitals. Much of the file content could be made Therion compatible relatively easily using a text editor, but surely this is not what is intended? Obviously there is something significant here that I am missing. Have searched about but have not found the solution yet. Does anyone have a small dataset that demonstrates the interaction between PocketTopo and Therion? Bruce

Explored always zero in continuation list

Have just noticed that 'explored lengths' are always reported as zero in continuation-list, They are correctly reported in caves-list and surveys-list. Bruce

I've been having a play with the ESRI format model and can display shots and stations but not the walls. Am I doing something wrong? Dave Clucas email:dave@daveclucas.com Website: http://daveclucas.com http://mycaves.org Skype: daveclucas

Multi-level cave - offset the levels

>Question one: I am working on a map of a cave which has a maze section. I >would like to compile the map so that the bottom level is connected to the >est of the cave while the top level is offset to one side. How is that >one? Bill A quick and perhaps inadequate reply, as I'm about to head off caving for a few days... Define a map (or maps) for the part of the cave that is to be offset. Look up pg 31 of The (current) Therion book regarding maps. Put some code defining an overall map in your INDEX*.th file along the lines of... map MiddleEarthPlanMap \ -title "Middle Earth and<br>Lower Greenlink Caves<br>Plan View" \ -projection plan GreenlinkFPlan@MiddleEarth # map defined in surveyF.th MiddleEarthEPlan@MiddleEarth # map defined in surveyE.th GreenlinkKPlan@MiddleEarth [-100 -100 m] above GreenlinkPPlan@MiddleEarth [-100 -100 m] above endmap The last two maps in the above will be offset 100m south and 100m west, and there will be an outline on the main part of the cave showing where the offset passages really lie. >Q2: s there a way to make Therion automatically scale the cross-section > based on the survey points rather than a scale line? I have only ever used the scale line, without trouble, so cannot comment. >Question three: Some of the area symbols seem to be a bit light in their >coverage. You could try some of the examples here http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php?id=metapost#cave_symbol_size_and_dens ity_examples Or perhaps better is to use point clay and point pebbles more often and area clay and area pebbles less often. Multi-level cave - offset the levels
by Bill Gee 25 Feb '10

Question one: I am working on a map of a cave which has a maze section. I would like to compile the map so that the bottom level is connected to the rest of the cave while the top level is offset to one side. How is that done? Yes, the top level is in two scraps of its own Question two: The same cave has a pit entrance perhaps 15 meters deep. I have a cross section of the pit with several survey points on it. Is there a way to make Therion automatically scale the cross-section based on the survey points rather than a scale line? When I use a scale line, the cross section comes out too big. I've had to fudge the scale to get it to draw approximately correct. Question three: Some of the area symbols seem to be a bit light in their coverage. I have several areas defined as "clay" or "pebbles", but when drawn on the map there is maybe one or two dots in the area. Is there a way to increase the density? Thanks - Bill Gee

Therion Book 5.3 pp55 to57 I expect I could use syntax like , export bbox -output ../Outputs/MiddleEarth-bbox.txt however it gives an error like D:\Program Files\Therion\therion.exe: error -- thconfig-MiddleEarth.thc [84] -- unsupported export type -- bbox The summary on p57 suggests this might work, export special -output ../Outputs/MiddleEarth-bbox.bbox but the same type of error is encountered. FW: export bbox
by Bruce 23 Feb '10

23 Feb '10

> supported syntax is > export map -output foo.bbox > thbook will be corrected. Thanks for pointing it out. Thank you, it works! I was surprised however that it appears to be latitude and longitude, when in my thconfig I have ... cs EPSG:27200 #NZ Map Grid 1949 ... to specify the output co-ordinate system. Is this intended and if so why? And to remind about a previously mentioned request, perhaps it is possible in due course to include the output co-ordinate system in this type of output (along with caves html, map and atlas pdf output headers)?
