plan cross-section
by marco corvi 24 Jun '11

seems that cross-section scrap must have a projection `none', which means that therion cannot use stations to scale it "properly". i had to draw a vertical cave, a sequence of pits, one on top of the next. instead of drawing a plan, with plenty of maps shifted to the side, i preferred to draw plan cross-sections nearby the shafts as cross-sections (with a section line marking their position on the pit). i would also like to have one north symbol on the map, to mark the orientation of all the plan cross-sections. i did it fiddling with the sources, but a "more stable" solution is appreciated. thanks for the help, marco

map-bg transparent
by Bruce 23 Sep '10

On the topic of maps within maps. Therion inserts images with transparent backgrounds into maps correctly - at least it has worked for me. Is it possible to get therion to create a map with a transparent background? Something like 'map-bg off' perhaps? This would be useful sometimes when inserting map enlargements within a main map output. Bruce

Re: [Therion] Paperless Cave Survey with DistoX, PocketTopo and Therion

Bruce Thanks for your explanations. At Sun, 31 Jan 2010 14:24:11 +1300, Bruce Mutton wrote: > It is documented, but on searching just now I discovered it is quite hard to > find. If I understand that correctly, PocketTopo is still completely closed and the file format not documented. Also from reading your comments, the PDA software seems to be quite inflexible (first splay shots, then next target). Since I am also considering going that route, these seem to be severe limitations. Working together with people using PocketTopo, it is quite inconvenint not to have true Therion *.th files with the full set of measurements, but just processed data. It would be great to be able to write a *.top conversion utility, but for that the file format needs to known. Best, Martin

Associating thconfig extension with Wish Application causes bad option utf-8 on some machines
by Bruce 03 Sep '10

03 Sep '10

For the last few years I have been adding a non-'therion'-standard extension to thconfig files, eg thconfig.thc so that I can open them in XTherion directly from the Windows File Explorer. The first time this is attempted an association needs to be made with 'Wish Application', but thereafter it works smoothly, well at least most of the time. I have described my rudimentary understanding of this here. http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php?id=windows <http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php?id=windows&s%5b%5d=modify&s%5b%5d=di stinguish&s%5b%5d=layout> &s[]=modify&s[]=distinguish&s[]=layout A while back I installed Therion on a Windows 7 machine and got an error similar to the image below. bad option "utf-8": must be convertfrom, convertto, names, or system while executing "encoding utf-8" (file "D:\Therion\....thconfig-Flora.thc" line 1) I assumed it was due to some difference between Windows 7 and Windows XP, upsetting the implementation of the tcl scripts, however I had the same problem recently with an old Windows XP machine (older that my current 2006 machine). So perhaps something else is going on. On a particular machine it will either always work, or never work. Any ideas how I might overcome the problem on the machines where this technique does not work? Bruce

symbol-hide group all failure
by Bruce 14 Aug '10

14 Aug '10

Following up on my post earlier in the year. I think I have narrowed to small degree when this problem occurs and at least found a workaround. The statement; symbol-hide group all was not working for me in one thconfig using all of a largish dataset as 'source', but worked fine in other thconfig files dealing with subsets of the same dataset. All of my exports refer to a 'LayoutStandard' that contains a line; symbol-show group all This is sometimes countermanded (if for example the output scale will be 1 5000) in a SUBSEQUENTLY called layout by a line; symbol-hide group all symbol-show <some symbols.> and if I am processing the whole dataset, there are no errors flagged, but it appears that the 'symbol-hide group all' is being ignored. (I THINK I have a good understanding of the order in which layout statements are processed, because I routinely use multiple layout files, that in turn call other layouts, often with statements that contradict each other, as a means of specifying output appearances in a modular manner - no problems except human error until this). It is strange because if I modify my 'LayoutStandard' to include; symbol-show group all symbol-hide group all the later statement is correctly processed. So my workaround is to remove the statement 'symbol-show group all' from my 'LayoutStandard' (or from any layout that is to be called). I guess that 'symbol-show group all' is the default so removing it should not cause further problems. Seems strange because they work correctly when on consecutive lines, but fail when called from separate files. Bruce _____ From: Bruce [mailto:dangle@tomo.co.nz] Sent: Thursday, 4 February 2010 11:10 p.m. To: 'List for Therion users' Subject: symbol-hide group all failure A bug perhaps. symbol-hide group all no longer hides point entities in 5.2.14 Has anyone else noticed this works or doesn't work for them?
