Re: [Therion] Point altitude/deph, Help !
by Xavier Robert 28 Jun '22

Hi all, I think I have found a trick. The other Xavier led me to the right tracks, thanks a lot ! Finally, this is quite simple with the point altitude, and no need to change anything inside the : - If we use the point altitude only with the option -align, we get the altitude - If we use the point altitude with the options -align and -value [-1004 m] where 1004 is the altitude of the main entrance, we print the depth only for that point (Do not forget the " - " before the altitude of the main entrance), and thus, we do not erase the classic point altitude. The only (small) limits are : * If the main entrance changes, we need to manually update ALL the points that print the depth. But that should not be be everyday, and not a big issue to do that. * the symbology of the two points is the same. I will have a look for a way to modify that and let you know if I find a trick (If I copy the code of the point Altitude, and call it p_u_depth(expr pos, R, S, A), it crashes...). Cheers, Xav

How to calculate the volume of a cave
by Bill Gee 31 Jan '22

31 Jan '22

Hello everyone - What tools can be used to calculate the volume of a cave based on center line and LRUD data? I found an email from Martin Sluka from about 4 years ago describing how to use Loch to export a .lox file in other formats, then run that file through CloudCompare or ParaView. The process looks very complex to me, and besides - Loch does not run on my computers, so there is no way for me to generate an export. As far as I can tell, Survex does not have a way to calculate volume. Could it be done with a KML file and Google Earth? -- Bill Gee

"\legendbox" "\loadpicture" and absolute paths
by rowena 14 Mar '21

14 Mar '21

Hello, I am using the "\loadpicture" capability in "\legendbox" constructs to include map sections, elevations, etc. It all works nicely on my PC where I am using relative paths to the pdf files. My club has a desire to archive the map data for posterity - ie if my pc dies or I go walkabout, the map data should still be available so that others can add to the maps as they are extended. I would prefer to have the images included using relative pathnames, rather than absolute pathnames, so that future explorers can download the map data and extend it, without having to duplicate my file hierarchy. How can I include relative paths in the \loadpicture functionality? Thanks, Rowena

texts_rs and a remark about karren vs anastomosis
by ivana miskovic 09 Feb '21

09 Feb '21

Hello, Here I put the translation file of map outputs in Serbian language. It would be great if texts_rs.txt were compiled in next Therion release. Also, unrelated to the translation itself, during translation I found some confusion in point symbols for karren and for anastomosis. It seems like they are inverted. Karren are generally sharp limestone formations on the floor, and anastomosis are usually remain like rounded rock formations in the cave ceiling. Unfortunately, in the UIS official symbol list, karren and anastomoses were put on the same picture. Thanx and c u in next surveyes, Ivana

Need metapost wizard: new text label
by Benedikt Hallinger 16 Jun '20

16 Jun '20

Hi there, i need some new point symbol (text label). Its a simple text on white color within a box with rounded corners, like the attached image. My metapostskills are not good enough to get this to work... For now i would be happy to have such a user point symbol. It would be important that it scales well and react to xtherions direction setting. Optional it would be cool if the default symbol could show the current survey identifier of the nearest station in the scrap and maybe also the nearest next survey. But this information could also be maintained manually for now. Is there someone here for my rescue? :) Thanks in advance, Beni

extend
by Marco Corvi 02 Jun '20

02 Jun '20

i think that extend should take values in the interval [-1,1], ie also fractional values, plus some special value such as "ignore" to open loops, and "undefined" to let the program choose, because it's a nuisance to enter a decimal number for every shot (legs + splays). therion uses the left/right normal/reverse etc. solution, and users should be allowed to set extend also for splays, if they need to. for now, let's use left/right/vert, and ignore only to open loops btw, are vertical extend considered in the computation of the cave length by therion ? marco

For JM Begley - Rebuild for Fedora 32
by Bill Gee 08 May '20

08 May '20

If it is not already in progress ... The Therion package in JM Begley's COPR repository needs to be rebuilt so it works on Fedora 32. When I try to run the upgrade from F31 to F32, it gives me this: ================ <snip...> Problem 3: package therion-5.4.4-2.fc31.x86_64 requires libproj.so.13()(64bit), but none of the providers can be installed - proj-5.2.0-5.fc31.x86_64 does not belong to a distupgrade repository - problem with installed package therion-5.4.4-2.fc31.x86_64 <snip ...> ================= Thanks! -- Bill Gee

Therion does not write valid colour by horizontal or vertical error data to 3d output
by Bruce Mutton 26 Apr '20

26 Apr '20

A while back Survex 1.43 improved the ability of Aven to visualise loop misclosures. Not only can it colour by error, it can now colour by horizontal or vertical loop error. Unfortunately, the 3d files produced by Therion do not properly write the data. A brief discussion here https://github.com/ojwb/survex/commit/fe8a1b478b91bd977a4b21be49af25724b16c6 92 that identifies the problem. Olly suggests the problem is: -Therion writes 0 for all the horz and vert error values where Survex is being used for data processing. -Therion equates the horz and vertical error to the total error where Therion does its own data processing. For users who want a work around, there is one described in the last line of the thread linked above. Bruce

Hatching profiles and extended elevations
by Roger Schuster 19 Apr '20

19 Apr '20

Hello cavers, at least in Germany it is/was usual to add hatching to extended elevations and profiles (cross sections) like in the following example: I guess it will be difficult to do this in Therion because the hatching is outside of the passage and will be clipped but anyway: Is there a way to achieve this? Is it possible to add an arrow to lines of type section indicating the viewing direction like in this example: Thank you! Best regards, Roger

Sketches on doesn't work / legacy survey
by Roger Schuster 19 Apr '20

19 Apr '20

Hello cavers, currently I try to work with some legacy survey which are the original survey data and the final map with scale bar but without marked stations. My intention is to geo-reference the existing map (i.e. attaching the entrance location to the UTM grid) and use it in a cave atlas of the area. I don't want to redraw the whole map in Therion. I followed the directions given in the therion wiki and entered the survey data and the resulting model in Loch looks fine and plausible. After that I created a scrap with the scanned map (projection plan) and scaled it using the scale bar and the scaling tool of Xtherion map editor. I marked the location of the first survey station at the cave entrance and in the layout section of my thconfig I turned on sketch export. Unfortunately it doesn't work. The generated pdf only contains the map header (with wrong length and depth statistics btw!) and a short part of the first survey shot. I expect the whole scanned background image to be visible and in scale in the pdf. Honestly said I never got the "sketches on" working with any of my old and new maps. What I am doing wrong? Any pointer to the right direction is highly appreciated. Best regards and thanks in advance, Roger
