Tunnel to therion conversion
by Wookey 05 Jul '22

05 Jul '22

Has anyone done any work on the task of converting existing Tunnel sketches (xml) to therion .th2 files? CUCC (Cambridge Loser expeditions: https://expo.survex.com) has a huge investment of tunnel drawings (55km of cave?), but because there are no elevations for any of this and Tunnel is a bit niche we are pondering using therion more. If a semi-automated conversion of the existing drawings was possible, that would help enormously. It seems like it shouldn't fundamentally be too hard to turn xml lines/beziers into therion lines/beziers, and map the line types, but there are issues with how to allocate lines to files and how to get the scaling right. I've not done anything at all about it yet, but thought I'd check if anyone else had before having a proper look. Thoughts? Wookey -- Principal hats: Debian, Wookware, ARM http://wookware.org/

Problems with labels and scaling
by Tarquin Wilton-Jones 30 Jun '22

30 Jun '22

Hi folks, I assume someone has already found out about these, but I could not find anything, so I have reported them as bugs. The first one is causing me issues. Does anyone know a workaround for it? 1. Labels get weird debugging numbers inserted before them if the ratio of base-scale to scale is not an integer: https://github.com/therion/therion/issues/428 2. Some kinds of label points cannot rotate, but most others can: https://github.com/therion/therion/issues/429 3. XTherion does not have the context menu items for editing altitude, date and station-name points. https://github.com/therion/therion/issues/430 4. The Therion book is missing the date -value and point station-name -text options. https://github.com/therion/therion/issues/431 Cheers, Tarquin

Re: [Therion] Point altitude/deph, Help !
by Xavier Robert 28 Jun '22

Hi all, I think I have found a trick. The other Xavier led me to the right tracks, thanks a lot ! Finally, this is quite simple with the point altitude, and no need to change anything inside the : - If we use the point altitude only with the option -align, we get the altitude - If we use the point altitude with the options -align and -value [-1004 m] where 1004 is the altitude of the main entrance, we print the depth only for that point (Do not forget the " - " before the altitude of the main entrance), and thus, we do not erase the classic point altitude. The only (small) limits are : * If the main entrance changes, we need to manually update ALL the points that print the depth. But that should not be be everyday, and not a big issue to do that. * the symbology of the two points is the same. I will have a look for a way to modify that and let you know if I find a trick (If I copy the code of the point Altitude, and call it p_u_depth(expr pos, R, S, A), it crashes...). Cheers, Xav

The purpose of \thfb
by Tarquin Wilton-Jones 27 Jun '22

27 Jun '22

Hi folks, A question relating to TEX. Previously, I used to use this: thTEX("\thframed {" & textsize & plaintext & "}") Where textsize was something like \thnormalsize This worked until recently. But now (Therion 6?) it returns nothing. After some trial and error (and looking through the -d output), I managed to make it work again like this: thTEX("\thframed {" & textsize & " \thfb " & plaintext & "}") But I have no idea why that works, and was hoping someone could explain to me: 1. What is \thfb ? 2. Why does it need that, and not a space? 3. How come it works without the whitespace, when plaintext could be anything, and that could construct a btex like: \thframed {\thnormalsize\thfbfoo} I would have expected \thfbfoo to be a command, but it seems to know that it is "\thfb" and "foo", not a single command. 4. Is there a better way to construct a btex "string" that can be used to create a p_label.urt piece of text that can work with the p_label_mode_passageheight style? For reference, this is what Therion itself creates: p_label(btex \thframed {\thsmallsize \thfb\char54 \mainfont{}} etex,(16.93,13.78),0.0,p_label_mode_passageheight); Stabbing in the dark here, and cannot find any explanations. Cheers Tarquin

Is copying supposed to be done in reverse?
by Tarquin Wilton-Jones 20 Jun '22

20 Jun '22

Hi folks, I stumbled on something odd about the "copy" command, which is used in a "layout". Normally, commands in a layout are interpreted in sequence, so if you hide something with one command, then show it with a subsequent command, it will use the second one, and show it: symbol-hide point stalactite symbol-show point stalactite #this one wins If two copy commands copy conflicting information, the first one is used, not the second. Assume the following .thconfig: layout first symbol-hide point stalactite symbol-hide point water-flow symbol-hide point dig code metapost let l_wall_bedrock = l_pit; endcode endlayout layout second symbol-show point stalactite code metapost let l_wall_bedrock = l_wall_debris; endcode endlayout layout third symbol-show point water-flow #overrides the copy below copy first #first one wins with copy copy second symbol-show point dig #overrides the copy above symbol-hide point anchor symbol-show point anchor #second one wins normally endlayout source "copy.th" select copyMP@copy export map -proj plan -layout third -o "copy.pdf" Use a basic survey with a default (bedrock) wall, stalactite, anchor, water-flow. I would expect the wall to look like debris, the stalactite to be visible, the anchor to be visible, the dig to be visible, and the water-flow to be hidden. But instead, the wall looks like a pitch, the stalactite is hidden (!), the anchor is visible, the dig is visible, and the water-flow is visible (!). It seems very inconsistent that the anchor and stalactite are visible at the same time, because it means most commands are executed sequentially, but copy commands are executed in reverse. It also seems inconsistent, but understandable, that both the water-flow and dig are visible. My understanding is therefore that: * All copy commands get moved to the top of the layout that they are inside, no matter where you put them in the layout. (Understandable but weird.) * Copy commands get executed in the opposite order from how they are specified (inconsistent with other commands). I couldn't find anything in the Therion book or wiki describing this, so is it a bug or expected behaviour? The book just says "copy <source layout id> . set properties here that are not modified based on the given source layout". That wording is really minimal, but it seems to suggest that commands in "third" will override anything in "first" and "second", which rather poorly explains the first bullet point. It does not explain the second. Therion 6.1.0, Windows 10. Cheers, Tarquin

extend start mysteries
by Bruce Mutton 13 Jun '22

13 Jun '22

Hello again I notice that the extend log sometimes includes many START statements. I can understand why the algorithm needs to reset itself once it gets to the end of a branch, and then backtracks all the way back to the original start, having generated all of the side passages on that branch on its way. At this point it needs to decide where to start again. This suggests to me that the user should be able to influence the subsequent start stations, so long as they study carefully where the first branch development is finally exhausted. However, I notice that if I specify multiple start statements, only one of them is ever used. What is going on here, and can the user influence subsequent start stations? In addition some of the start stations appear to be splay stations. Since in general splay stations are not considered part of the primary survey leg centreline structure, surely this is some kind of bug? Here is an extract from an extend log. START 3.67(a)3.Hawkes START -(a)2.Hawkes RIGHT 2.29(a)2.Hawkes done Thanks Bruce

extend of nosurvey legs not always rendered
by Bruce Mutton 13 Jun '22

13 Jun '22

Stacho (you might have best insight into this) I'm working on a small but slightly complicated plan and extended elevation, 876 m of survey and 9 loops, plus additional loops created using nosurvey legs. I have been making slow progress, but resolving the centreline extension across some of the loop connections has been eluding me. I think in part it is because the nosurvey legs are not always rendered in extended elevations. In the screenshots and transcript below, 3.70 right to 3.69 is rendered in the extended elevation, but not 3.69 left to 1.5. It is exactly as though there is an 'extend hide 3.69 1.5' statement in there, in fact I tried adding that, and it made no difference at all (not that that proves anything). I have purged all 'extend hide' statements from the dataset, and at least some of the other nosurvey legs are rendered correctly when I do that. In the plan view below; * Survey legs are shown in yellow and brown - yellow for flags 'duplicate', brown for flags 'not duplicate' (not many of those in this image) * dashed survey legs are flagged 'approximate' (because they are nosurvey legs, this is how I distinguish them pictorially for debugging purposes) Here is part of the log extend transcript: START 3.75(a)3.Hawkes START 3.72(a)3.Hawkes START 3.78(a)3.Hawkes START 3.79(a)3.Hawkes START 3.70(a)3.Hawkes RIGHT 3.69(a)3.Hawkes LEFT 1.5(a)1.Hawkes BACK 3.69(a)3.Hawkes BACK 3.70(a)3.Hawkes RIGHT 3.71(a)4.Hawkes RIGHT 4.2(a)4.Hawkes So, is it possible that nosurvey legs are not reliably plotted in extended elevations? Or is it likely that I have some other problem here? Bruce
