SVG export -- labels
by Martin Budaj 30 Mar '05

Just working on SVG export. There are more ways how to handle labels -- but no perfect one. 1) Use SVG fonts (embedded). These would be supplied with Therion (converted from TeX fonts used in PDF output). pros: the SVG map will be nearly identical to PDF cons: large file (fonts are embedded) SVG fonts are unhinted hard to edit in drawing programs hard to add new font 2) Use system fonts pros: small file (fonts are not embedded) full unicode support (if unicode fonts are installed) cons: platform dependent problems with precise alignment of labels metapost can't calculate frames (e.g. for passage height) nor clipping paths 3) Use system fonts but supply font metrics for metapost pros: nice output with clipping paths, alignment etc. cons: unportable hard to generate metrics for the regular user 4) Use bitmaps as labels cons: unscalable would require additional convertor uneditable I'd like to get your comments, hints or suggestions, which one to prefer. I'd say the 1st one. Cheers, Martin

Xtherion 0.3.7 connecting to the internet
by Duncan Collis 23 Mar '05

23 Mar '05

Hi. I just started with Therion, so probably there will be many more questions... I've noticed that when I start Xtherion, if I'm not connected to the internet I get a popup message from Win XP telling me that a program attempted to connect to therion.speleo.sk Once I've dismissed the message, Xtherion seems to work fine, but it considerably delays opening the editor. Is there any way I can tell Xtherion not to do this? CMYK colour

Martin Budaj wrote: >> ... therion uses RGB color model ... For printing surveys using offset lithography, it'd be very useful to be able to be able to specify colours using the CMYK model to give full control over the colours used. Might this be possible in a future release? I think we could check for the files. If they exist in rigth places, we could assume they are good, so install script a) does nothing b) rename them to .bkp (or .new, as suggested by Ladislav) -no settings are loosed. BTW, why the files can be on so many directories? I think they should be under /etc on *nix and under Program files\therion on windows. It would be simpler. May be Wookey, as debian developer, knows it better. I found some debian packages who ask when detected user-edited configuration files, (but at this moment I can't remember which ones) If this is a matter of shell scripting, I could work on it. >> 2. Or, do you mean that install will ask things to set good values? Regards, Roman

section lines
by Roman Muñoz 14 Mar '05

Hi all, I guess that type section for lines only sets a concrete line width, and may be sets it not to be clipped, but it would be all. Rigth? I wonder wether these nice section lines I have seen, wich have an arrowhead are made ex profeso (type arrow, -clip off or so) or are pre-built. Regards, Roman

statistics
by Roman Muñoz 11 Mar '05

11 Mar '05

Hi there, I would to have some nice statistics on my legend. But it seems as I need to do some black magic with those code tex-map things. There are some nice things as \cavelength, \topoteam or this kind of grial called \legendcontent. They look as what I need. But I'm getting stuck (again). Could someone give a complete-but-simple code tex-map section to display: cavelength, cavedepth, exploteam, topoteam, cartoteam ? Why statistics topo-length on shows nothing on my maps? I can't get even survey team members printed on pdf :( Regards, Roman

Latest developement snapshot
by Stacho Mudrak 11 Mar '05

11 Mar '05

Besides bug fixes, also 3D modelling was improved a little bit. Currently therion takes UD information from centerline (where available) and uses it for 3D model from plan scraps (not only passage height is used). Also new point type is available to enter 3D information into scraps: point X Y dimensions -value [<above> <below> [<units>]] Where <above>/<below> is distance to wall (ceiling/floor in plan projection) above/below centerline plane. When 3D modelling will be recoded, also elevation/extended projection scraps should be used for 3D modelling. But it is still far future. S.

Extended elevation
by Stacho Mudrak 05 Mar '05

05 Mar '05

There is a new developement snapshot with new extended elevation processing. Now you can work with it like with plan/elevation projections. Specifications can be done via extend option in centerline (see CHANGES file). Also export map -proj extended -fmt xvi should work (with UD data). If you are interested in testing, your suggestions and BUG reports are welcome. S.
