Therion's Loch features (incognito) on NZ TV
by Bruce 19 Oct '15

19 Oct '15

Loch model of 39 km cave features in this TV news clip at 3:47 (Me carrying two packs on the opening still, and stuck at 2:00) http://www.3news.co.nz/Deepest-cave-discovered-in-our-backyard/tabid/817/art icleID/330973/Default.aspx Centreline data has been processed for the last few(?) decades with a home-made unix application that uses proprietary routines, so will only live while Jonathan is with his current employer. As you might have guessed, an 'export to Therion' routine is being worked on. Bruce

Compiling Therion projects from Notepad++
by Footleg 08 Jan '15

08 Jan '15

I find having multiple thconfig files open so I can compile different parts of my large cave system project very useful. So I was investgating how to run Therion from Notepad++ (my preferred text editor). This is how I got it working: I wrote a 2 line batch file containing these commands: cd %1 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Therion\therion.exe" %2 Saved to somewhere on disk, and then call it from Notepad++ using the Run command, as follows: On the Run menu in Notepad++, Select the 'Run' item, and enter the command as follows: "C:\Personal\Caving\Therion\compileTherion.bat" "$(CURRENT_DIRECTORY)" "$(FILE_NAME)" (But using the path to where you saved your batch file). Save the command (I called it 'Compile Therion' and gave it the shortcut CTRL+T). Now with any thconfig file open in a tab in Notepad++, I can compile that project by pressing CTRL+T, or by selecting 'Compile Therion' from the Run menu. You can create multiple thconfig files in the same folder on Windows, by giving them any filename you want with the extension .thc or give them no extension at all. That way all the files will be listed in the 'Open File' dialog from the compile tab in xTherion. Next I'll see if I can get my batch file to open the output PDF automatically in Foxit Reader :) But that will be less general because I need to pick a PDF filename which can vary between my thconfig files. wxWidgets 3.0.0
by Olly Betts 14 Jun '14

I've been fighting to get loch to work with wxWidgets 3.0.0. The first obstacle is that they now enable __WXDEBUG__ mode by default, so misuses of the API result in warning dialogs popping up. I've attached a patch which fixes that, and updates a couple of places where deprecated methods are used. This doesn't get you a fully working loch though - starting loch and loading a file seems to work OK, *if* loch was compiled with optimisation. Starting loch with a file specified on the command line segfaults in the first call to gluScaleImage() in lxData.cxx, though it works when run under gdb or valgrind, so I guess there is a subtle timing issue (and that this might not happen on all machines). There are also more uses of deprecated methods, most notably using an implicit wxGLContext is now deprecated. I tried to update that one, but things seemed to crash a lot - I suspect the underlying problem noted above needs addressing first. I've been testing on Debian unstable (which has packages of wx 3.0.0). Cheers, Olly

5.3.14
by Stacho Mudrak 01 Apr '14

01 Apr '14

Hi everybody, yesterday I have updated xtherion a little bit. "Edit->Hide inactive scraps" should work now as well as right clicking on point or line invokes context menu. If you have some idea, what else should go to context menu or how items there should be arranged, please let me know. For windows users: I have upgraded bundled TclTk to 8.6 (in fact, only 8.5 features were needed), but I had to compile it my self. I hope, there will be no major issues. Regards, S.

symbol colour leaking
by Bruce 31 Mar '14

31 Mar '14

I've got an problem with colours leaking to places they should not. Has been present since at least 5.3.12 through 5.3.14 For example, if I add this statement to a layout; symbol-colour point station-name [54 7 60] Then my station names are purple, as intended, but a few of the wall altitudes will also be purple, which is not as intended. If I move them to another wall point, then usually I can get them to drop the rogue colour eventually. In the example below, 178 is black as intended, and 185 is the wrong colour. I see I also have a similar thing going on with the rock-edge lines. One of the 4 rocks below has grey rock-edges, and it is even more bizarre, because it persists when I drop all colour statements from my layouts. (Don't worry about the coloured centrelines - I am experimenting with visualisation of the various shot flags - and that at least seems to be behaving well) Can anyone offer a solution, or a place to look for the problem? - my guess is that either the meta-post for writing the station-name or the wall altitude is written consistent with whatever the therion convention is, but when I search the source I cannot decipher how to find the code for these two particular symbols. Metapost error 256
by Bill Gee 26 Mar '14

Hello everyone - I am trying to get Therion to work on a laptop. As far as I can tell, it is configured exactly the same as my desktop computer where Therion works just fine. Both systems are on the same version of Therion. Both are 64-bit Fedora 20. Both have the same set Texlive, Metapost and font packages. Therion.ini is identical. From a command prompt "mpost --version" produces the same output. I have checked file system permissions, and they all are the same. Any clues? What else should I look at? Loop closure / deviation of broken clino
by Stelios Zacharias 05 Mar '14

05 Mar '14

Dear all, I recall a discussion here about using a fairly broad sd value to allow loop closure when trying to transfer paper surveys into Therion - I may be misremembering. I recently surveyed a closed loop with a broken clinometer (spinning wildly with no fluid to damp the motion), so for each leg of the survey I have distance and azimouth accurately and slope as an approximation. How would I set up the sd (if indeed this is how I would do it) to close the loop and correct my approximate / estimated slopes? I look forward to hearing from you. Stelios Zacharias

Drawing for generating outputs at multiple different scales
by Footleg 04 Mar '14

04 Mar '14

Now that I have enough knowledge to really start drawing up my large project cave systems, I am discovering that it is difficult to draw scraps in a way which renders nicely at different scales. I want to be able to produce a very detailed survey (using a scale of around 1:500) but also to output a complete system drawing at a scale more suited to a large map (say 1:5000). I find symbols getting rendered larger than the passage widths (which seems odd as unless people have much larger passages than me in their caves, I would expect symbols to be limited to a sensible scale for a typical large passage, or omitted?). But also text labels are so large that they obscure entire areas of the cave at the 1:5000 scale. Any tips and tricks for how to draw once, use twice? Or do I really need to maintain two copies of every scrap? Is there a way to draw some detail on a scrap for 1:5000 type scale, and then augment it with fine details for rendering at 1:500 by adding a second scrap for the labels and symbols? Footleg
