symbol-show fixed points
by Bruce 02 Dec '11

02 Dec '11

Hi All I've been trying to understand symbol-show and symbol-hide a little better as they relate to pdf outputs. How do I display the text associated with fixed points? I have some map objects defined for various caves in a large system. These are comprised of scrap drawings. I also have a map object with the minor surface features nearby, such as sinks, dolines, isolated entrances and significant navigational features such as fence posts or trees (for example). This is comprised of a survey only (mostly fixed points, and no scrap drawings) however and uses flags such as doline or sink, and most points have a text string associated ie. fix 15 2521640 6042938 581 10 10 30 station 15 "Concrete water trough" I would like to show the caves as outlines with all the rest of their symbology turned off, and the surface features with each of the points labelled with appropriate symbol and associated text. This is for an area map, at scales of say 1:5000 or 1:10,000 I can turn the cave symbols off with symbol-hide statements, and so far I think that is working out OK. However. -layout-symbol-show point flag:entrance \ -layout-symbol-show point flag:sink \ -layout-symbol-show point flag:spring \ -layout-symbol-show point flag:doline \ -layout-symbol-show point flag:dig \ The above layout statements cause the special entrance and sink etc symbols to be displayed, AND show the text string associated with the point. These are not displayed by default as far as I can tell, but these statements rectify that. -layout-symbol-show group all And the group all statement has pretty much the same effect in a more comprehensive and compact format. However none of the above enables me to display the text for my "Concrete water trough" example above. It is always just a cross with no text, or with '15' if debug station-names is on. It shows up in Loch, but not in pdfs. So, how do I display the text associated with fixed points? Is there a need for. -layout-symbol-show point fixed . or something similar? Also, sometimes I would like to display the point symbols (for the likes of the above flags) OR the text strings associated with the points, but not both at once. Is there a way of doing this? Thanks Bruce

Self adjusting label positions and missing point +s
by Bruce 26 Nov '11

26 Nov '11

I have just discovered a wonderous thing. Where surface points in a survey centreline are included in a map, the labels will self organise so that they don't overlap. See example 1 and 2 attached. This effect goes away I think when the points are included in a scrap. It also does not have effect between separate map objects. Is this default therion behaviour, or is it directly inherited from tex? Could it be implemented in outputs derived from scrap drawings? Now on to my short-term deadline question! Why might example 1 have +s in on all the points and example 2 have all the +s missing? I have not done any redefinition of points (unless by accident, and then they should be identical), and I think my symbol-show, symbol-hides are similar (though not the same I admit). Both the images are from the same dataset, just in different regions a few km apart, and also in different parallel branches of the survey structure, so somewhat independent of each other. Both have caves displayed in a similar manner to example 2, it's just that the caves in example 1 were not included in the screenshot. As you can see, the map structure in example 1 is very simple (the old paper cave map was traced in outline only in therion), whereas example 2 has perhaps 100 maps as it is a 15km cave drawn entirely with therion. I have turned off the layers which would have made the image confusing. Any guesses as to which symbol-show (or other statement) directly effects the + part of the point symbol, as I would like to show them in both cases? I'm also still looking for a way to show the labels for fixed points (and leave other point labels unaffected). What is the 'property' that Loch uses to make the distinction in it's data file? Bruce

Re: [Therion] vthreshold inefficient

The last time I checked it, many months ago, I encountered the opposite problem: no way to exclude vtrheshold, even with 90° value. This was a great problem for using old data collected in traditional way (only vertical up-down values). I'm going to check this as soon as possible. Loch 5.3.8 not displaying models on Debian wheezy
by Andrew Atkinson 12 Nov '11

Hello all I started on this problem before the summer, but then I went away for a few weeks. But I am working on surveys again so I could really do with loch. (One plus from before the summer is that aven is upgraded to 1.2.2 and that now works again, so I am not completely blind) So trying to open a lox or 3d file in loch just gives a blank screen (grey to go with the border) Runing it from terminal does the same with no errors. Below is the useful information that aven gives you when you look at help Andrew Linux 3.0.0-1-amd64 x86_64 wxWidgets 2.8.10 (GTK+ >= 2.6) Display Depth: 24 bpp (colour) OpenGL 2.1.2 NVIDIA 275.28 NVIDIA Corporation GeForce 7300 GS/PCI/SSE2 GLX 1.4 R8G8B8 Max Texture size: 4096x4096 Max Viewport size: 4096x4096 Smooth Point Size 1.000-63.375 (granularity 0.125) Aliased point size 1.000-63.000 Double buffered: true GL_ARB_color_buffer_float GL_ARB_copy_buffer GL_ARB_depth_clamp GL_ARB_depth_texture GL_ARB_draw_buffers GL_ARB_ES2_compatibility GL_ARB_explicit_attrib_location GL_ARB_fragment_program GL_ARB_fragment_program_shadow GL_ARB_fragment_shader GL_ARB_framebuffer_object GL_ARB_half_float_pixel GL_ARB_half_float_vertex GL_ARB_imaging GL_ARB_map_buffer_range GL_ARB_multisample GL_ARB_multitexture GL_ARB_occlusion_query GL_ARB_occlusion_query2 GL_ARB_pixel_buffer_object GL_ARB_point_parameters GL_ARB_point_sprite GL_ARB_provoking_vertex GL_ARB_robustness GL_ARB_sampler_objects GL_ARB_separate_shader_objects GL_ARB_shader_objects GL_ARB_shading_language_100 GL_ARB_shading_language_include GL_ARB_shadow GL_ARB_texture_border_clamp GL_ARB_texture_compression GL_ARB_texture_cube_map GL_ARB_texture_env_add GL_ARB_texture_env_combine GL_ARB_texture_env_crossbar GL_ARB_texture_env_dot3 GL_ARB_texture_float GL_ARB_texture_mirrored_repeat GL_ARB_texture_non_power_of_two GL_ARB_texture_rectangle GL_ARB_texture_rg GL_ARB_texture_swizzle GL_ARB_timer_query GL_ARB_transpose_matrix GL_ARB_vertex_array_bgra GL_ARB_vertex_array_object GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object GL_ARB_vertex_program GL_ARB_vertex_shader GL_ARB_window_pos GL_ATI_draw_buffers GL_ATI_texture_float GL_ATI_texture_mirror_once GL_S3_s3tc GL_EXT_texture_env_add GL_EXT_abgr GL_EXT_bgra GL_EXT_blend_color GL_EXT_blend_equation_separate GL_EXT_blend_func_separate GL_EXT_blend_minmax GL_EXT_blend_subtract GL_EXT_compiled_vertex_array GL_EXT_Cg_shader GL_EXT_depth_bounds_test GL_EXT_direct_state_access GL_EXT_draw_range_elements GL_EXT_fog_coord GL_EXT_framebuffer_blit GL_EXT_framebuffer_multisample GL_EXT_framebuffer_object GL_EXT_gpu_program_parameters GL_EXT_multi_draw_arrays GL_EXT_packed_depth_stencil GL_EXT_packed_pixels GL_EXT_pixel_buffer_object GL_EXT_point_parameters GL_EXT_provoking_vertex GL_EXT_rescale_normal GL_EXT_secondary_color GL_EXT_separate_shader_objects GL_EXT_separate_specular_color GL_EXT_shadow_funcs GL_EXT_stencil_two_side GL_EXT_stencil_wrap GL_EXT_texture3D GL_EXT_texture_compression_dxt1 GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc GL_EXT_texture_cube_map GL_EXT_texture_edge_clamp GL_EXT_texture_env_combine GL_EXT_texture_env_dot3 GL_EXT_texture_filter_anisotropic GL_EXT_texture_format_BGRA8888 GL_EXT_texture_lod GL_EXT_texture_lod_bias GL_EXT_texture_mirror_clamp GL_EXT_texture_object GL_EXT_texture_sRGB GL_EXT_texture_swizzle GL_EXT_timer_query GL_EXT_vertex_array GL_EXT_vertex_array_bgra GL_EXT_x11_sync_object GL_IBM_rasterpos_clip GL_IBM_texture_mirrored_repeat GL_KTX_buffer_region GL_NV_alpha_test GL_NV_blend_minmax GL_NV_blend_square GL_NV_complex_primitives GL_NV_copy_depth_to_color GL_NV_depth_clamp GL_NV_fbo_color_attachments GL_NV_fence GL_NV_float_buffer GL_NV_fog_distance GL_NV_fragdepth GL_NV_fragment_program GL_NV_fragment_program_option GL_NV_fragment_program2 GL_NV_framebuffer_multisample_coverage GL_NV_half_float GL_NV_light_max_exponent GL_NV_multisample_filter_hint GL_NV_occlusion_query GL_NV_packed_depth_stencil GL_NV_pixel_data_range GL_NV_point_sprite GL_NV_primitive_restart GL_NV_register_combiners GL_NV_register_combiners2 GL_NV_texgen_reflection GL_NV_texture_barrier GL_NV_texture_compression_vtc GL_NV_texture_env_combine4 GL_NV_texture_expand_normal GL_NV_texture_lod_clamp GL_NV_texture_rectangle GL_NV_texture_shader GL_NV_texture_shader2 GL_NV_texture_shader3 GL_NV_vertex_array_range GL_NV_vertex_array_range2 GL_NV_vertex_program GL_NV_vertex_program1_1 GL_NV_vertex_program2 GL_NV_vertex_program2_option GL_NV_vertex_program3 GL_NVX_conditional_render GL_OES_depth24 GL_OES_depth32 GL_OES_depth_texture GL_OES_element_index_uint GL_OES_fbo_render_mipmap GL_OES_get_program_binary GL_OES_mapbuffer GL_OES_packed_depth_stencil GL_OES_rgb8_rgba8 GL_OES_standard_derivatives GL_OES_texture_3D GL_OES_texture_float GL_OES_texture_float_linear GL_OES_texture_half_float GL_OES_texture_half_float_linear GL_OES_texture_npot GL_OES_vertex_array_object GL_OES_vertex_half_float GL_SGIS_generate_mipmap GL_SGIS_texture_lod GL_SGIX_depth_texture GL_SGIX_shadow GL_SUN_slice_accum

Is it possible to not use the equate command when all stations are unique
by Torstein Finnesand 10 Nov '11

10 Nov '11

Hi, "Equate" is used to set the survey stations equivalence, i.e: equate 2@first 1@second. The cave I survey has only unique station names (about 3000). But still I have to use the equate command for a station that is located in 2 surveys. If not, the loops will not be closed. So I do like this: equate TA40@first TA40@second. I have to use this command many times, since the cave has a lot of surveys. Question: Is it possible to not use the equate command, since all stations are unique? For instance by another command that tells Therion/survex that the station names are unique even if there are two or more surveys or by arranging data in another way. Torstein Finnesand Norway

How to draw flooded passages
by Maximillian Dornseif 30 Oct '11

30 Oct '11

Please ignore my ignorance. I'm trying to draw cave passage which are mainly flooded but have a few places where you can surface due to air filed domes. See http://static.23.nu/md/Pictures/ZZ6E08C628.png - the orange parts are the ones where we can breathe air. How do I draw something like this? Two layers, or an area where we can surface? If so which kind of area is preferred? Regards Maximillian Dornseif

[PATCH] Therion 5.3.8 on MacOS X 10.7.2
by Maximillian Dornseif 28 Oct '11

28 Oct '11

To make Therion 5.3.8 compile on current MacOS X I had to modify the makefiles slightly. It would be nice if you could integrate the patch into the mainline. The patch is attached or available at https://github.com/mdornseif/therion/commit/9bf3e30b9c832b71492919f776fe323… Best Regards Maximillian Dornseif

Easy toggle for offset maps
by Bruce 24 Oct '11

24 Oct '11

One of my 'to do' list projects has been to figure out a was of organising map objects so that it is easy to create map and atlas outputs either with or without map offsets. I want to use the same map definitions in both cases to avoid lots of duplication = lots more room for error. Why? Because multilevel cave maps at say 1:200 to 1:2000 scales are more useful/legible with offsets, and at say 1:5000 to 1:10000 are more useful without offsets (eg locality maps with offsets built in are misleading). Atlas outputs, I have decided, should never have offsets, because the whole point of a multilevel (multi-chapter?) atlas is to show the passage in it's true relationship and the offsets seem to scramble the chapter structure (or I have been doing something wrong). The strategy I was thinking of was finding a cunning map object structure that allowed a fairly easy toggle between the two options, but my loose conclusion is that for a complicated multilayer cave it will usually involve the commenting and uncomenting of many lines of map definitions, possibly in a number of locations, and some layout data block changes. This makes it difficult if you have not used that particular dataset for a while. An example of the sort of thing that is required is changing; PR-PigletsJiltedPlan@MiddleEarth [0 100 m] above to; PR-PigletsJiltedPlan@MiddleEarth # [0 100 m] above A much simpler concept would be to have a simple layout command like; Ignore offsets that might be valid for both map outputs and atlas outputs. ie, if 'ignore offsets' is processed anywhere in the thconfig scope, then no offsets are produced. If it is not, then the offsets are produced as defined. Simple (for the users) - only one character change (#) in one place. Is this concept already implemented and I have not managed to find it? Or if not, could it be implemented (easily)? Bruce

map header - north sout range
by Christian 24 Oct '11

24 Oct '11

Hi, i use the tex /legendcontent to format my map headers. There i need especially three length informations. Cavedepth, Cavelength and Horizontallength. The first two are directly inside the header. But not the Horizontallength (North-South or East-West range). Is it possible to include it in the header? Heres what i think about: \edef\tmp{\the\CAVEHORIZONTALDEPTH} \ifx\tmp\empty \else {\size[14]\the\CAVEHORIZONTALDEPTHtitle: \ss\the\CAVEHORIZONTALDEPTH\par} \fi Thank you in advance! Problem with diving data
by Xavier Robert 20 Oct '11

20 Oct '11

Hi all, I am currently trying to draw a map with diving data. But she I compile, I receive a metapost error. This probably because of the structure of my data, but even after reading The THbook and the Survex tutorial, I do not understand where/why. Can someone give me any advise ? I attach to this emai a zip file that contain : - a simple part of my diving data, with its thconfig file - The associated log file. Thanks a lot !
