"\legendbox" "\loadpicture" and absolute paths
by rowena 14 Mar '21

Hello, I am using the "\loadpicture" capability in "\legendbox" constructs to include map sections, elevations, etc. It all works nicely on my PC where I am using relative paths to the pdf files. My club has a desire to archive the map data for posterity - ie if my pc dies or I go walkabout, the map data should still be available so that others can add to the maps as they are extended. I would prefer to have the images included using relative pathnames, rather than absolute pathnames, so that future explorers can download the map data and extend it, without having to duplicate my file hierarchy. How can I include relative paths in the \loadpicture functionality? Thanks, Rowena

TerrainTool
by Graham Mullan 28 Jun '19

Mike McCombe's TerrainTool has been fixed and is available again from http://www.ubss.org.uk/terraintool/terraintool.php Download and enjoy. It may not use the latest data but it remains the most straightforward way of adding topographic detail to Therion 3D models. Graham

Scale dependant error when using area fills
by Tom Foord 20 Jan '19

20 Jan '19

Hi all I'm having some problems compiling a project which includes debris area fills. Depending on the exact symbol fill that I use, I am getting strange scale-dependant errors which seem to cause the compiler to loop endlessly until I force it to stop. I originally noticed the problem when using a custom area fill that I made by modifying the standard a_debris_AUT symbol fill. I've attached my modified metapost definition in the attached text file 'a_debris_WUG.txt'. The error occurs for any scale between 1:2000 and 1:4483 (outside of this range the project compiles fine). See attached output log 'Output log - a_debris_WUG.txt'. As you can see, the file seems to loop over and over again. Initially I thought this problem was specific to my custom fill, but then I noticed that I also get a similar error when using the standard a_debris_AUT fill, however this time the error only occurs when the scale is set to exactly 1:2000 (any other scale seems to be fine). See attached output log 'Output log - a_debris_AUT.txt'. Can anyone help with this problem? Thanks Tom

Eurospeleo surveying
by Wookey 01 May '18

Eurospeleo is in Austria this summer (Ebensee). I plan to be there. Some of the rest of you no doubt are too. Does anyone know if there are any surveying meet-ups planned? I think it would be a good idea to arrange a session of some sort just to meet up and find pout what people are doing. Anyone got any enthusiasm for something more comprehensive, like practical survey work, or training or otherwise comparing notes? Maybe reporting on the survey/GIS work in the UK (initial meeting next weekend)? Talk abstracts need to be in by 30th Jan so if you want to give talks say so now. Maybe reporting on the survey/GIS work in the UK (initial meeting next weekend) which I am unfortunately going to miss? If there is nothing already planned, I will register for an 'open session' to be scheduled so surveyors can just compare notes and report what they are doing, as we did informally at Brno. Georeferenced PNG export problem
by Evaristo Quiroga 03 Apr '18

03 Apr '18

Hi, I want to export a map to georeferenced PGN. I am using the Xtherion "Help\Calibrate bitmap" function to register a PDF map to PGN, like explain in the next message. https://www.mail-archive.com/therion@speleo.sk/msg02593.html ThePNG is created appropriately, but I have problems with the ".MAP" file. When I execute the command, it creates a good PGN file, but creates an empty ".map" file. When a close Xtherion, the ".map" file is filled with the information. But that information is wrong, the coordinates are 0,0 (look attached file). Wheres is my mistake? An other question, can I convert the background to transparent directly from Therion. I want import the georeferenced PNG in Google Earth or GIS, and want only have the cave survey rendered and see the other layers around the cave. Regards, Evaristo.

scaling line ornamentation - metapost
by Bruce Mutton 30 Mar '18

30 Mar '18

Hi I'm wondering if there is a way to scale the size of line ornamentation with the -scale option? I am thinking about arrows (and map-connections) as in a previous post. I notice that I can apply -scale to a line wall Eg line wall -scale xs subtype debris <list of coordinates> endline and the line will plot, but at always at normal scale. I can see why that might be, as there seems to be no way to pass the scale value into the metapost definition of the wall (or arrow) line object. However if I put in a layout. min-symbol-scale m then the wall (or arrow) that has a scale of s or xs will not plot (as I think is expected). So there is some crude on/off control, but I have not found where it is done. So I am wondering, is there some way that we can have more refined control of the scale of line ornamentation (wall debris, blocks, arrow heads)? I notice line arrow takes the special argument -head [both | none | begin]. Somewhere between the th2 file and the metapost arrow definition, the argument -head gets changed to the variable Q that is parsed to the metapost code, that controls which ends of the arrow line get arrow heads. I have copied the code below. Whereabouts is the code that tells Therion that -head is parsed to the metapost definition as Q? Bruce In th2 file. line arrow -head both <coordinates> endline In thline.mp or in a layout file. code metapost % Q = 0 -- no arrows % 1 -- end % 2 -- begin % 3 -- both def l_arrow (expr P, Q) = T:=identity; pickup PenB; thdraw P; p := (-.1u,-.5u)--(0,0)--(.1u,-.5u)--cycle; % 0.25 changed to .5 and close end to get nicer arrowhead if odd Q: thfilldraw p rotated (angle(thdir(P,0))+90) shifted (point 0 of P); fi; if Q>1: thfilldraw p rotated (angle(thdir(P,length P))-90) shifted (point infinity of P); fi; enddef;

Syntax highlighting for therion files (.th, .th2 and .thconfig)
by Xavier Robert 29 Mar '18

29 Mar '18

Dear all, I am not sure to have post this info for those who are interested in it. I often edit my therion file inside an external editor as Textwrangler or Brackets. I wrote some configuration files for both softwares to color the Therion’s syntax. That is not complete, they may be still errors, but you can find them here : For Texwrangler : https://github.com/robertxa/Therion-TextWrangler For Brackets : https://github.com/robertxa/Therion-Brackets Have a good weekend, Xavier

Survey and drawing date
by Roger Schuster 28 Mar '18

28 Mar '18

Hello cavers, if I put date 2017.08.27 in the centerline block and -author 2018.03.28 "Drawing Guy" in the scrap element then both dates will be displayed on the final map with year only. Is it possible to get the complete date and even better in German locale (dd.MM.yyyy)? Thank you, Roger

Redefining map-connection
by Bruce Mutton 28 Mar '18

28 Mar '18

Hi, I'm looking for a little metapost guidance. I want to redefine the map-connection line, making the line thicker, dashed, with a dot at the start and larger arrowhead at the end. Also a nicer generic arrowhead shape. As the default Therion metapost uses a standard arrow definition for 'line arrow' and for 'line map-connection' I would like to maintain that efficiency, except I would like the map-connection arrows heads to be two or three times larger than the standard arrow head. So far, with the slightly modified standard Therion code below, I have achieved all of that except for the difference in arrowhead sizes. Compare this with the original I expect I could do it by duplicating the l_arrow definition (and call it l_arrowbig for example) , but this seems inefficient. Could I modify the size of the arrowhead with the statement that calls l_arrow(P,1); ? Although I'm thinking possibly that is not the best idea, as scaling l_arrow will affect the whole line as well as the arrowhead I expect. Comments? Bruce #ARROW and MAP-CONNECTION REDEFINITIONS #-------------------------- code metapost % Q = 0 -- no arrows % 1 -- end % 2 -- begin % 3 -- both def l_arrow (expr P, Q) = T:=identity; pickup PenB; thdraw P; p := (-.1u,-.5u)--(0,0)--(.1u,-.5u)--cycle; % 0.25 changed to .5 and close end to get nicer arrowhead if odd Q: thfilldraw p rotated (angle(thdir(P,0))+90) shifted (point 0 of P); fi; if Q>1: thfilldraw p rotated (angle(thdir(P,length P))-90) shifted (point infinity of P); fi; enddef; def l_mapconnection (expr P) = thdrawoptions(dashed dashpattern(on 1bp off 2bp on 1bp off 2bp) scaled (2 * optical_zoom) withpen PenB); %draw map-connection line with arrowhead at end l_arrow(P,1); %How to double or triple arrowhead size with this call? %draw dot at start of map-connection line thdraw point infinity of P withpen pencircle scaled 0.3u; %Why infinity and not 0 for start?? %If point before arrow head, then point does not render in legend but does on map?? thdrawoptions(); enddef; endcode
