Thanks Xavier. FYI I have added a rudimentary entry to https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/contrib:externaleditors#for_input_files If you would like me to add to or reword the entry I can. Or you could contact wikiadmin[at]speleo.sk for a username and password, if you’d rather do it yourself. :) Bruce From: Therion <therion-bounces(a)speleo.sk> On Behalf Of Xavier Robert via Therion Sent: Sunday, 25 March 2018 6:40 AM To: Therion <therion(a)speleo.sk> Cc: Xavier Robert <xavier.robert(a)univ-grenoble-alpes.fr> Subject: [Therion] Syntax highlighting for therion files (.th, .th2 and .thconfig) Dear all, I am not sure to have post this info for those who are interested in it. I often edit my therion file inside an external editor as Textwrangler or Brackets. I wrote some configuration files for both softwares to color the Therion’s syntax. That is not complete, they may be still errors, but you can find them here : * For Texwrangler : https://github.com/robertxa/Therion-TextWrangler * For Brackets : https://github.com/robertxa/Therion-Brackets Have a good weekend, Xavier

Macos 10.11 (El Capitan) install
by Xavier Robert 22 Mar '18

22 Mar '18

Hi all, I just downloaded the last development version (5.4.1+?) and tried to install it on my mac (El Capitan). make configure-macosx and make went well, (I did not changed anything in the source files, that is great): At that stage, I could launch Therion or Xtherion locally, they work well. However, I faced some problems with sudo make install: I had an error because of writing permissions in usr/bin/. I am not a Macos guru, but if I good understood, from El Capitan, we do not have access to usr/bin/ even with a root login. I thus changed the makeinstall.tcl to copy the exec files to /usr/local/bin (Homebrew folder) for the macosx version (L30 to L33). I made some basics tests, and it seems working well. I opened a pull request for that in case it is relevant for all mac users. For the loch install, I had the same problem, even with a « sudo make install » I have permissions errors to write in the folder /Applications/. I needed to 1) I need to edit the loch.app/Contents/ by creating a new MacOs Folder 2) copy the loch file to loch.app/Contents/MacOs/ and to copy manually the loch.app to /Applications/. I do not know if there is a way to automate that. I have not changed anything in the makeinstall.tcl for that. Cheers, Xavier

Include PDF or SVG graphics in METAPOST macro
by Evaristo Quiroga 22 Mar '18

22 Mar '18

Hi, Is it possible to include PDF or SVG files in METAPOST Macros? I want to define complicate symbols like trees to therion. It would be easy if I can include a PDF o SVG file and define the scale in a METAPOST macro. If not possible, do you know a software to translate a PDF or SVG to Metapost macro. Thanks, Evaristo.

Re: [Therion] Scaling problems with backgrounds in th2 files - XTherion

I’m a big fan of undo, and use it a lot. Unfortunately I did not notice the reason in this case until too late. I got to the end of the undo stack before the problem was resolved. I think that the reason I did not take sufficient notice is that although the zoom behaviour was not quite right, I was sure I had not rolled the mouse wheel. Hence I though I’d stumbled on a variant of the bug, and so put up with it for too long before trying to back out. For me rolling the mouse wheel to zoom is such a reflex (almost every application uses it) that I do it without realising. One option, short of fixing the bug, would be to have the zoom level display on the menu bar between the + and – controls. That would give the user a cue to an imminent problem. The notification in the Drawing Area side menu is buried too deep for the user to review constantly. Martin S. 19. 3. 2018 v 9:44, Bruce Mutton via Therion <therion(a)speleo.sk <mailto:therion@speleo.sk> >: Today I made a new .th2 drawing file and used a .png file as a background image. Not something I do very much these days, as I typically use .xvi files created PocketTopo files. The xvi images work just fine in XTherion. But as described in the post in this link, <https://www.mail-archive.com/therion@speleo.sk/msg06890.html> https://www.mail-archive.com/therion@speleo.sk/msg06890.html, there are problems when using the mouse wheel to zoom if background images are .jpg or .png. Until now I have adopted a work around of only using the menu + and – zoom buttons where th2 files are linked to these. However for one projected elevation drawing, even the + and – controls are problematic. I think I accidentally used the mouse wheel before inserting the image. As a result the image is only aligned with the sketch at one particular zoom level. 144% in this case. There is also a problem with the image clipping. <image001.png> In the above example, if I zoom out one level, the drawing reduces, but the image does not change by the same amount. <image002.png> If I use the zoom wheel, the situation compounds and gets worse. So I have a situation where I can only align this drawing at one zoom level, and I have to be careful not to use the mouse wheel. Not really a problem in this case, as it is a trivial survey and scrap, but it is a significant issue for anyone who might still be regularly using scanned sketches for drawing. Is this something that someone knows how to address? Error When Adding A new Cave to Master Index - Therion Theory
by Bruce Mutton 05 Mar '18

05 Mar '18

Nick This may or may not help, but you have stumbled, in part, into a topic I explored back in July 2017 (if seems much longer than that), with mixed feedback! https://www.mail-archive.com/therion@speleo.sk/msg06555.html At the time I made some changes based on feedback received. I have not looked at it for a while, but have attached the file in its current state, with changes tracked. It is still a bit rough I'm sorry. Bruce From: Therion <therion-bounces(a)speleo.sk> On Behalf Of Nick Bairstow via Therion Sent: Friday, 2 March 2018 11:01 PM To: List for Therion users <therion(a)speleo.sk> Cc: Nick Bairstow <Nick(a)pff.uk.com> Subject: Re: [Therion] Error When Adding A new Cave to Master Index OK as is normally the case with these things I spotted the error within five minutes of asking for help, but it has raised a another question. My problem was quite simply I had no survey/end survey wrapper. I have been using this index file for over two years and never noticed however it has worked perfectly and produced what I needed. I now ask why did the index.th compile OK with the other 18 surveys listed in it. The only difference between the first 18 surveys and the last non-working one was that in each scrap of the 18 previous surveys I used the option -station-names "" "@surveyname". I was shown this when I started learning Therion but never really new why. When using this option to make any survey.th compile I have to make sure the map/endmap is outside the survey/endsurvey wrapper. With the my latest survey file I did not use the scrap option and just went with the "normal way" with everything in survey.th within the survey/endsurvey and then the index .th failed due to having no survey/endsurvey wrapper. Clearly I do not yet fully understand the process even though I can make things work, so lots more reading I think. Does anyone know of a good explanation somewhere, most thing I read I find a little confusing. Also if someone would like to explain the -station-names "" "@surveyname" bit I would be very grateful. I suspect I'm not the only one to have struggled with this. Thanks for the previous answers guys. I do this intentionally while I am drawing up a new piece of passage, then remove the survey map once I am finished. Everything compiles but the pdf shows the new cave as shots and splays not as the normal walls etc you would expect in a map. All other caves display correctly as intended. Has anyone point out what I am doing wrong. Nick

Hi everyone, Many thanks for you replies. I have all answers to my problems. @Olly, your messages about magnetic declination are very relevant. I also believe it could be clearer. You can write something on wiki? I’ll do the same on french wiki. Martin K.
