Cutting off a grid
by Tarquin Wilton-Jones 25 Nov '21

25 Nov '21

Hi, We have a vertical cave that is just over 100 metres deep, with its entrance just below a 100 metre contour. We want to show a grid on the elevation view, like this: #show an altitude grid every 25 metres #("50 50" affects only plan view, so is ignored here) grid bottom #behind the cave grid-size 50 50 10 meters #one line every 25 metres of depth grid-coords border #show numbers at the edge of the survey This leaves a 20+ metre gap at the bottom, since the cave only just made it past the last 25 metre grid line. 1. Is there a way to cut off the grid after a certain amount, so that it doesn't show the blank gap at the bottom? Or alternatively, cut off the grid after the cave ends? Or "show the next grid line if the cave is within 5 metres of it"? 2. Is there a way to start the grid at "0" at the entrance to the cave, in order to show depth below the entrance instead of the altitude above sea level? I tried this: grid-origin 0 0 400 meters But Therion just threw an error with no error message, so I am obviously doing something wrong. Does that only work in plan view perhaps?

thfill with page background colour?
by Benedikt Hallinger 24 Nov '21

24 Nov '21

Hi metapost wizards, I try to fill a label with the page background. thfill ((bbox lab)) scaled (sc * basescale * 1.5) withcolor <insertColorHere>; For <insertColorHere> i tried "label_fill_color", which however may be a different background. I also tried "background", but that yields the cave passage background colour. In which variable do i access the page's background color (the one set wit the layout option "map-bg")? Thanks! Beni

Is survey -namespace off and sometimes on possible in same survey project?
by Bruce Mutton 22 Nov '21

22 Nov '21

Just a quick question before contemplating the migration of a large (more than 70 km and many caves) dataset to Therion. The dataset has unique station names, so in Therion speak, every survey would have -namespace off set. I have never used this setting, but do not anticipate any problem so long as every survey has -namespace off set. The trick is that there are two caves that have been processed from the very start with Therion (using the default -namespace on, of course) and one of the large caves has a currently 'not-incorporated' section of Therion namespaced data. None of this Therion data is currently incorporated in the large dataset. There will probably be more namespaced data in future. So my question is: Can we have an integrated Therion project where some surveys have -namespace on and some with -namespace off? I imagine this will work, but having never tried it I am cautious about diving into such a large undertaking, in case it is doomed to failure because of a requirement for significant manual intervention (I did that for 30 km of the system, but I have lost enthusiasm for that). XVI format specification
by Rodrigo Severo 17 Nov '21

17 Nov '21

Hi, I would like to implement XVI image format visualization support in Mapiah but couldn't find XVI image format specification (in my rather quick search, I confess). Can someone please give me some pointers? Specification, supporting library or else? Regards, Rodrigo

Therion/XTherion mailing list hijacking by Mapiah
by Rodrigo Severo 16 Nov '21

16 Nov '21

Dear list and specially Stacho and Martin, With this last messages I believe it's fair to say that I might be hijacking Therion/XTherion list to talk about Mapiah. If/when you believe this is a problem, please let me know and I will implement some alternative infrasctructure. I am not doing it already just because it might be beneficial to involved with Therion to follow Mapiah development but your take on this is authoritative. Please let me know if it's a problem. Best regards, Rodrigo

Rock border not creating boulders with smooth altitude shading
by Tarquin Wilton-Jones 14 Nov '21

14 Nov '21

Hi folks, I feel like I must have missed some email about this; surely someone will have noticed before... Boulders. They are made from line rock-border, which will create a shaded boulder when closed. Make an area of water. Create a line rock-border half-way into the water, and half out of the water, but still in the passage. The boulder is the same colour as the background. Translucent, sitting on top of the water. Set this: color map-fg scrap Still works the same. Now set this: color map-fg altitude The boulder loses its colour, and is nothing more than a thick line, so it stops looking like a boulder. Set this, and the boulder returns to being a boulder: smooth-shading off Is this an intentional change, a known limitation, or a bug? Cheers, Tarquin

Colour map-fg altitude quick shading breaks object colour fills
by Bruce Mutton 14 Nov '21

[Found this sitting in my drafts folder from early November] Interesting. All these years I’ve been thinking at cross-purposes, and assumed that the Foxit and Sumatra rendering (See Viewers for Therion Outputs <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/contrib:externalviewers#examples_of_renderin…> ) was closest to the intended rendering, and that Adobe Reader was doing it wrong. I had thought the poor implementation referred to was this: or this …whereby the water and underlying rocks show through the large rock, such as with Foxit. I had thought the more intense (or doubled?) colour within the likes of rocks and flowstone areas was the intended effect. For me the Adobe rendering appears flat and boring. Rereading the wiki and linked pages, I now see that I was wrong. Personally I much prefer the look of maps with the more intense colour within rocks etc as rendered by Foxit, the only downside being that underlying objects within the same passage/scrap are not completely hidden. For me, the Adobe rendering would be ideal if the colours were doubled up in the rocks, ie similar to the image on the left (from the wiki) but with ‘double-white’ rocks. In the case of colour-fg white the rocks would obscure the passage below slightly more than the surrounding open passage. What do other people prefer? Bruce From: Therion < <mailto:therion-bounces@speleo.sk> therion-bounces(a)speleo.sk> On Behalf Of Martin Budaj Sent: Friday, 5 November 2021 06:45 To: List for Therion users < <mailto:therion@speleo.sk> therion(a)speleo.sk> Subject: Re: [Therion] Colour map-fg altitude quick shading breaks object colour fills Hi, the expected colouring in both modes is like in the first picture (smooth shading = quick). Although some PDF viewers display rocks etc. in a colour slightly different from the scrap background, that's caused by their incomplete implementation of the transparency knockout groups. Try opening the second map in the Adobe Reader to check the colour of rocks, it should be similar to the first screenshot. Depth adds on surface if it is in a different sub-survey
by Tarquin Wilton-Jones 05 Nov '21

05 Nov '21

Hi folks, Ages ago, I filed https://github.com/therion/therion/issues/165 and Stacho fixed it (thanks!). We have just stumbled on another variant of it in a survey where both surface and the cave are rendered in a map (a few slopes on the surface), but the surface comes from a different sub-survey. This causes Therion to add on the depth of the surface legs too, so the cave gets far deeper than it should be. https://github.com/therion/therion/issues/392 I wonder how many cave surveys there are out there with the wrong depth because of this, since I would think that the vast majority of big surveys are done this way... o_O Tarquin
