Mapiah 0.2.10 release
by Rodrigo Severo 09 Aug '25

09 Aug '25

Hi, Version 0.2.10 of Mapiah is available at https://github.com/rsevero/mapiah/releases/tag/v0.2.10 for Linux, MacOS and Windows. The updated web version is available at https://mapiah.org/webapp/ Despite the long delay, this version has basically only one new functionality: xth_me_image_insert support for XVI, jpg, png etc file formats. It took me longer than expected to fully (?) support xth_me_image_insert and XVI files. The delay was also enlarged by the 19th International Speleology Congress that took place in Brazil, which demanded lots of attention for many brazilian cavers including myself. Please let me know if the XVI support looks good. Regards, Rodrigo

Mapiah, again
by Rodrigo Severo 15 Jun '25

15 Jun '25

Hi, Here I am again with Mapiah. Now I believe we have an already usable version of Mapiah. You can find it at https://github.com/rsevero/mapiah Currently there is a Linux flatpak and a web release: - Linux: flatpak install io.github.rsevero.mapiah; flatpak run io.github.rsevero.mapiah - Web: https://mapiah.org/webapp If someone is interested in creating a Windows, MacOS or another flavor of Linux package and want help, please contact me. Some interesting characteristics of Mapiah: - Visually distinguish all point, line, and area types supported by Therion. - Graphical interface for editing all supported options of points, lines, and areas supported by Therion. - Multiple mouse and keyboard pan and zoom options. - On save, original file lines are only changed if an actual edit modified them, which facilitates version control management. - Uses Therion as the source of truth regarding supported features; i.e., if Therion supports it, Mapiah should support it as well. - As a secondary effect, tries to update and detail the Therion Book so it better reflects Therion features. - Equivalent versions for Linux, Windows, MacOS, and web. - Unlimited undo/redo. - Redos available after some undos and new actions merged in the undo queue. Please try it and let me know what you think about it. Regards, Rodrigo

reading the description, *Mapiah* looks *very interesting.* unfortunately i already got stuck with a problem: if i try to open a file, the dialog does not shows any file, neither most of the directories. for instance my home directory appear empty. i used flatpak install and run. on debian 5.10.237-1 On Thu, Jun 12, 2025 at 10:11 AM <therion-request(a)speleo.sk> wrote: > Send Therion mailing list submissions to > therion(a)speleo.sk > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > https://mailman.speleo.sk/listinfo/therion > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > therion-request(a)speleo.sk > > You can reach the person managing the list at > therion-owner(a)speleo.sk > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Therion digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Scaling the entire output
by Tarquin Wilton-Jones 06 Jun '25

06 Jun '25

Hi, I am sure I am not the only person to have this need, so I must have missed an option or control somewhere, or just misunderstood how scaling works. I output the survey like this: base-scale 1 100 scale 1 100 That makes a page 104.5 x 56.8 cm. I need to send it to a printer company, for printing at A2 (59.4 cm longer dimension). If I were printing this myself, I would just tick the "scale to fit" box in the PDF app. But the printing company say that the PDF sheet size needs to match the A2 paper size. I can set: base-scale 1 176 scale 1 176 And that gets the survey right. But it renders the *legend* and any embedded map-image at the static width. I can set the size of the legend, but then it still draws everything as if it were the old non-scaled size. What I want to do is to scale the actual output, the same way that a PDF app's printing tickbox would. Is that possible? Cheers, Tarquin

Map previews override passage offset previews in subsequently selected passages
by Bruce Mutton 18 May '25

18 May '25

The scenario: I have a large cave, and so to gain better control of extent of pages for export than is possible using atlas, I define and export sub-maps. Each submap (of maps) is a logical grouping of passages in part of the cave, each submap either linearly placed one after the other, or above and below other groupings of passages. ie map AllofCave map Submap1 map submap2 map submap3 etc endmap AllofCave Each of these submaps contains small local maps that are offset and previewed above and or below. ie a short bit of passage here and there. To facilitate flexibility of map production, the thconfig selections are grouped and mostly commented like this. # select AllofCave select Submap1 select Submap2 # select Submap3 etc In order that each of these submaps can be presented as a stand-alone output showing its relationship with the neighbouring submaps, or even all of the cave, each submap contains previews of its neighbouring submaps. ie map Submap1 preview above Submap2 preview above Submap3 <other 'map of maps' specified to define this part of cave> <including small local map [offset] above or below> endmap Submap1 map Submap2 preview above (or below) Submap1 preview above Submap3 <other 'map of maps' specified to define this part of cave> <including small local map [offset] above or below> endmap Submap2 Usually in the thconfig, one of the selects is uncommented at a time, but in parts of the cave and for some end uses, two or three submap selects are uncommented, as with Submap1 and Submap2 above. This is when the problem arises. The problem: Having two or more selects for the same projection breaks the previews of the small offset sections of passage in the second and subsequently selected submaps. ie Submap1 and Submap3 previews are correct, but all of Submap2 offset previews forced to above by the preview spec in Submap1 The order of selecting Submap1 and Submap2 has been swapped, so you can see previews in the top part of the image are now correct, but the previews in the bottom part of the image are incorrect. Possible Workaround: Use only ONE select (for each projection) by collecting all of the maps you want to 'select' into a new map. The disadvantage of this is that one must pre-empt all combinations of submaps into yet more maps. But anyway, lets try it. Now the individual passage offset previews are correctly rendered in all of the submaps (Submap1 and Submap2), except that the other submap previews (Submap3 etc) are not rendered at all. So that did not work. Trying adding -map-level 1 to the select for the new map gives some insight, but not a solution. .because now the behaviour is the same as if I had uncommented multiple selects in the thconfig file and not defined a new map at all. The workaround/solution I came up with: The submap previews in the submaps specified after the first one will be ignored (somehow they are in a different map-level, but the first one is not), so any submap previews that are wanted must be specified directly in the new map. ie map newMap preview above Submap3 Submap1 Submap2 endmap newMap Now all of the offset previews and submap previews are displayed as they 'should' be displayed. Question: The Therion Book on page 50 seems to hint at the workaround/solution I eventually came up with. Why can the above output not be achieved by specifying multiple selects in the thconfig? Or can it be achieved? It would be a simpler solution than having to define a map for each of the many combinations of submaps that users might want to produce. I realise I don't understand 'map-level' very well. Does anyone have any insights beyond what is written in the Therion Book and in the wiki? Bruce

Length of cave reported too much by factor of 150 times
by Bruce Mutton 18 May '25

18 May '25

Somewhere between Therion 6.3.1 and 6.3.4 my cave model grew from about 38 km in length to 5,727 km in length. The shorter distance is more likely to be correct! I presume it is a Therion bug rather than a bug in my data input. I have described it a little more in https://github.com/therion/therion/issues/663 Bruce

station mark symbols shown incorrectly in cross sections
by Bruce Mutton 23 Apr '25

23 Apr '25

In addition, point station-name does not recognise the stations in cross sections (no labels are produced), And 'altitude .' on cross section wall points detect the altitude as zero meters (which is mentioned as possibly expected behaviour in a recent p27 Therion Book edit, despite actual behaviour for plan, elevation and extended projections correctly detecting the elevation). I have the feeling that all three features worked some time ago. but I have not been able to find examples. Has anyone else noticed these limitations with cross section (projection none) drawings? Bruce From: Bruce Mutton <bruce(a)tomo.co.nz> Sent: Monday, 21 April 2025 16:06 To: 'List for Therion users' <therion(a)speleo.sk> Subject: station mark symbols shown incorrectly in cross sections Hello I'm just noticing that stations with mark natural and mark fixed are no longer plotting correctly in cross sections (ie scraps with projection none). In place of the (correct) circle or triangle, they are plotting as a + which is the symbol allocated for mark temporary. Unfortunately I hardly ever bother with cross sections, so I cannot say when this changed, except that I'm fairly sure they used to plot correctly. An example of inconsistently plotting stations below. Bruce
