Mapiah v0.2.14 released
by Rodrigo Severo 04 Sep '25

04 Sep '25

Hi, Welcome to our weekly Mapiah release. We are now at version 0.2.14 with the following changelog: - New features: - Get list of available encodings from 'therion --print-encodings'. - Create new th2 file. - Create scrap dialog presenting both scrap scale and projection used both in scrap and in file creation. - On save as, force '.th2' extension. - Support for unknown point, line, and area types. - Fixed bugs: - Multiple clicks in radio groups sometimes raised "RadioGroup policy does not support multiple selected items". - Editing scrap multiple options option not working. - Regression that blocked element options editing after inclusion of support for scrap options. - MPAddLineCommand.fromExisting leaves addAreaTHIDCommand parameter uninitialized when line wasn´t part of an area. - Filename at status bar not updated after save as. - Parsing of scrap projection elevation with angle but no index failing. - Infrastructure maintenance: - Separating mp_projection_option_widget in mp_projection_option_widget and mp_projection_option_overlay_window_widget so mp_projection_option_widget can be reused in mp_add_file_dialog_widget. - Substituting placeholder at THCommandOption creation. - flutter pub upgrade. The desktop versions are available at https://github.com/rsevero/mapiah/releases/tag/v0.2.14. The web version is available, as usual, at https://mapiah.org/webapp. The last release got two reports about files not opening but unfortunatelly I didn´t get any example of such files so I don't know what the problem Mapiah has with these files BUT I bet that maybe item 1.e. of the above changelog might have fixed these issues, or at least some of them. Please report! Rodrigo

Predefined variables always full width if used directly
by Andrew Atkinson 01 Sep '25

01 Sep '25

Hello I was getting some strange paper sizes when I was using predefined variable as in the example on page 76 of the thbook \def\maplayout{ \legendbox{0}{100}{NW}{\northarrow} \legendbox{100}{100}{W}{\the\thversion} } If you do this the map pdf almost doubles in width. It appears that this happens for most of the variables that I tried \cavename, \copyrights, \explotitle, A bit of playing around and it appear that when the variable is placed it is the same width as the page of the map, so if you put it on the right hand side the page almost doubles in width. This appears to me to be a bug, but it might just my lack of knowledge of how to use it. Setting \legendwidth or legend-width does not seem to change the behaviour. thanks Andrew

Progressive coded JPG files??
by Bill Gee 26 Aug '25

26 Aug '25

Hello everyone - This has been annoying me for a bit. Today I discovered it is actually a big problem. For the past few months - I do not remember exactly how long - When I add a background to a th2 file, I get a message about unable to load the file. Screen shot attached. For new th2 files I have got around it by using magick to convert the background images to PNG files. Easy and quick, though annoying that it has to be done at all. Many of those images come from a friend who scans the paper through a flatbed. He uses Windows, and I just assumed something about his scanner software was wonky. Today I went back to some stuff I last worked on several years ago. The th2 file failed to open the background. The message said the file was not available. I removed the background image and tried to reload it. BAM! I get the same message about unable to load and asking if the file is a progressive JPG! These background images did not come from my friend's scanner. They came from a 25 year old camera. Some are PDF files converted to JPG and others come from my flatbed scanner using xsane. These are files that worked several years ago. I have not changed them. Trying some other stuff ... It appears that xTherion will no longer load ANY jpg file. The question about progressive format is bogus. Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Yeah, I could go back and convert thousands of background images from all the maps I have worked on. It would take days to find and update all of them, and all the th2 files as well. But dang it - This should Just Work! And what happens if PNG files stop working, too?? The system is Fedora 42. Therion is 6.3.4+dev, compiled back in April. I have several jpeg libraries installed: root@main2:~# rpm -qa | grep jpeg libjpeg-turbo-3.1.0-2.fc42.x86_64 openjpeg-2.5.3-6.fc42.x86_64 turbojpeg-3.1.0-2.fc42.x86_64 openjpeg-tools-2.5.3-6.fc42.x86_64 libjpeg-turbo-utils-3.1.0-2.fc42.x86_64 libjpeg-turbo-devel-3.1.0-2.fc42.x86_64 openjpeg-devel-2.5.3-6.fc42.x86_64 jpeginfo-1.7.1-6.fc42.x86_64 jpegoptim-1.5.5-6.fc42.x86_64 mjpegtools-libs-2.2.1-8.fc42.x86_64 I ran jpeginfo -i across some of these files. According to jpeginfo, they are NOT progressive format, as shown by the 'N' right after the bit depth: 2021_04_01 SHN-017 CAVE SPRING CAVE PLAN VIEW X23-X26.JPG 1686 x 2952 24bit N JFIF,ICC Huffman,300dpi 1487615 Thanks! -- =============== Bill Gee

symbol-hide group text does not hide station text label with flag entrance
by Bruce Mutton 24 Aug '25

24 Aug '25

This looks like a bug, but symbol-show and symbol-hide behaviour is somewhat complicated, so maybe something I've missed. When point stations have text added to them in the survey centreline, like station O1 "Olympia Cave Main Entrance" entrance it seems that the layout statement symbol-hide group text is ineffective for these station points. All text is hidden except the text associated with stations, as specified above. This is what I want (achieved by forcing the size of all text to near-zero) This is the best I can get (without the above hack) More detail on how I got here at https://github.com/therion/therion/issues/682 Bruce

Mapiah v0.2.12 released
by Rodrigo Severo 21 Aug '25

21 Aug '25

Hi, Version 0.2.12 of Mapiah has just been released. It's available at <https://github.com/rsevero/mapiah/releases/tag/v0.2.12> for desktops and at <https://mapiah.org/webapp> for web. It includes the following changes: - New features: - Open th2 file from command line [proposed and implemented by Thomas Holder] - Moving control points in smooth line segments should move the other control point visually attached to the same end point. - When editing smooth option, the affected endpoints are automatically redrawn to indicate the new smooth setting. - When setting 'smooth' option to on on line segments, the bezier curve line segments should be smoothed. - Consider XVI and raster image files bounding boxes when calculating THFile bounding box. - Fixed bugs: - Fixed 'setting multiple option options in line segments not working'. - Fixed 'clicking in another controlpoint after moving a control point would unselect everything'. - Making selection tolerance and point radius the same to avoid clicking near the border of a point and not selecting it. - Fixed 'when selecting a control point 1 the control points of the adjacent line segments weren't properly selected'. - Fixed 'changing first point of a line to bezier curve throws an exception'. - Fixed 'when a Bèzier control point is selected, an end point appears as selected also'. - Fixed 'when multiple elements are selected and the user asks for the options window, options that were set on the last selected element would be shown as if it were selected for all elements'. - Fixed 'right clicking anywhere when a control point is selected raises an exception'. - Fixed 'opening a TH2 file that calls for a non existent XVI file should not hang Mapiah'. - Fixed 'opening a TH2 file that calls for an non existent raster image should not raise an exception'. - Infrastructure maintanance: - Migrated MPMultipleElementsCommand constructors to MPMultipleElementsCommandFactory. - Adopted RadioGroup: https://docs.flutter.dev/release/breaking-changes/radio-api-redesign - Fixed 'file_picker version 10.3.1 won´t show any files if 'allowedExtensions' is set'. Please use, test and report your impressions. Regards, Rodrigo

recovering lost data after buggy undo behavior in xtherion
by Jonny Prouty 19 Aug '25

19 Aug '25

Hello all, I am writing this list hoping to avoid redoing many hours worth of drafting. To be brief, xtherion has overwritten the th2 file I wasa editing. Yes, I should have done a git commit or done some other backup after that amount of work, too late now. I have seen this behavior before but it hasn't bitten me this badly until now. In this case, I deleted several objects (in this case rock-border lines) and then thought better of it and hit ctrl-z several times to undo the delete. At some point I received the following error message: can't read "xth(me,imgs,,XVIimg)": no such element in array can't read "xth(me,imgs,,XVIimg)": no such element in array while executing "if {$xth(me,imgs,$imgx,XVIimg)} continue" (procedure "xth_me_write_file" line 24) invoked from within "xth_me_write_file $fname" (procedure "xth_me_save_file" line 42) invoked from within "xth_me_save_file 1" invoked from within ".xth.tb.savasb invoke" ("uplevel" body line 1) invoked from within "uplevel #0 [list $w invoke]" (procedure "tk::ButtonUp" line 22) invoked from within "tk::ButtonUp .xth.tb.savasb" (command bound to event) This may be associated with me having just added an additional sketch as a background image and dragged it into position, but I don't know if that is associated or purely circumstantial. Regardless, I am now unable to save the file, or use the 'save as' functionality. I receive the same error when I attempt to do that. When I examine the contents of the th2 file via the command line, it is empty, and indeed the file now has a size of 0 bytes. However, in xtherion I can still click on objects and view their attributes, and I can drag the map around and xtherion successully redraws items in the current view. Clearly, xtherion still has some representation of the file. I dumped the memory of the process into a file and then extracted the strings from it: gcore -o /tmp/therion_dump 83677 strings /tmp/therion_dump.83677 > /tmp/therion_memory.txt The data is definitely in there, I can grep for specific text that I know is in the th2 file, but it is pretty jumbled up. Reconstructing the th2 file from the coredump is probably viable, but I don't know that it would be any easier than simply redrafting the survey. Does anyone know of a relatively straightforward way to recover data from xtherion after a soft crash? I'd absolutely love to not have to redraft all of this passage. I will be leaving xtherion open for the time being in hope a solution exists. As an aside, when I examined the files that are currently being accessed by the xtherion process, the th2 file is listed multiple times under different file descriptors. That seems odd to me. lsof -p 83677 | grep th2 COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME xtherion 83677 jprouty 6w REG 0,49 0 13011147 /home/jprouty/data/caving/survey/redacted_cave/survey/20250816/F_plan.th2 xtherion 83677 jprouty 7w REG 0,49 0 13037825 /home/jprouty/data/caving/survey/redacted_cave/survey/20250816/F_plan_2.th2 xtherion 83677 jprouty 8w REG 0,49 0 13011147 /home/jprouty/data/caving/survey/redacted_cave/survey/20250816/F_plan.th2 xtherion 83677 jprouty 9w REG 0,49 0 13011147 /home/jprouty/data/caving/survey/redacted_cave/survey/20250816/F_plan.th2 xtherion 83677 jprouty 10w REG 0,49 0 13011147 /home/jprouty/data/caving/survey/redacted_cave/survey/20250816/F_plan.th2 xtherion 83677 jprouty 11w REG 0,49 0 13011147 /home/jprouty/data/caving/survey/redacted_cave/survey/20250816/F_plan.th2 xtherion 83677 jprouty 12w REG 0,49 0 13037825 /home/jprouty/data/caving/survey/redacted_cave/survey/20250816/F_plan_2.th2 xtherion 83677 jprouty 13w REG 0,49 0 13037825 /home/jprouty/data/caving/survey/redacted_cave/survey/20250816/F_plan_2.th2 xtherion 83677 jprouty 14w REG 0,49 0 13037825 /home/jprouty/data/caving/survey/redacted_cave/survey/20250816/F_plan_2.th2 Thanks very much in advance for any and all help! unexpected warning - cs not supported for surface grid definition
by Bruce Mutton 17 Aug '25

17 Aug '25

Good evening I've just noticed that a surface definition file that git tells me I have been using unchanged since 2014 is now throwing up a warning in Therion. I made a github issue here https://github.com/therion/therion/issues/681 It affects cs EPSG:2193 #NZ Transverse Mercator 2000 It does not affect cs EPSG:27200 #NZ Map Grid 1949 The warning is triggered with versions of Therion from 6.3.3+ Despite the warning it seems that list, pdf and lox model outputs are produced properly.
