Re: [Therion] Distance between two survey station
Hello, I'd like to know if there's a method for calculating the distance between two survey station, and also for identifying the shortest path, or even for determining all possible paths. I think this should be possible using the .slq file. thanks Eric Georges
Hi Eric, Probably best exporting to survex - total time of below including downloading, probably 2mins!?! In thconfig Export model -o cavesurvey.3d Download survex https://survex.com/download.html , open the .3d File in survex (double click after installation) and select the two points, then the window at the bottom will give you some of the vital statistics. Something like: H for horizontal distance - this is the one I suspect your looking for. L for length D for depth ^ these are all from memory, give me a day and I’ll get back in the game and be able to tell you for sure. Al. Totally agree with Alastair :)
open the .3d File in survex
"Survex Aven" specifically.
select the two points
Select *one* point. Then hold your mouse over the second point.
H for horizontal distance - this is the one I suspect your looking for. L for length D for depth
H = horizontal component V = vertical component Dist = total distance in a straight vector (Oh how I wish it could also tell me "Distance along the survey legs between these points", so I could see how much caving I have to do to get there - pipe dream...)
Thinking again about your question brings be back to survex, but seems you need to be a coder to get it to work (not my forté). https://crates.io/crates/survex-dist Survex does underpin therion, so would always be my go to for some of the data driven questions. je Trouvé vous sont régulièrement dans le doubs, je suis allé à lons-le-saunier récemment, a lovely part of France with some great swimming lakes! très jaloux Al. Hi, I once found a GPL2 library called "survex.py" from Thomas Holder. Using that it is possible to find the shortest path (as you walk) between two points. Survex itself just shows the shortest path as the crow flies. I made a convinience wrapper "shortestPath.py" for the task, call example (linux): $ ./shortestPath.py Hirlatzhoehle.Zubringer.1.1.0 Hirlatzhoehle.Alter_Teil.2.1.55 ('Shortest route length:', 2214.546790435116, 'm') ('Cumulated height going upwards:', 354, 'm') ('Cumulated depth going downwards:', -196, 'm') I hope its useful, greetings, Beni Am 2025-09-04 22:28, schrieb eric georges via Therion:

Hello, Thank you for your replies. I was familiar with the "Survex Aven" method, but it was "Distance along the survey legs between these points" that I was looking for. The method proposed by Benedikt Hallinger (shortestPath.py) works very well. I'm currently unable to compile "survex-dist" (I get an error), the method proposed by Alastair Gott.
