Setting up a Therion ecosystem on Mac
Mōrena I just offered to help a fellow caver set up a Therion ecosystem on their computer. Only I’m a Windows user, and I just found out they’re on Mac. I wouldn’t even know how to turn on a Mac. So I’m looking for any tips and advice to help ease the process. Here is what looks like software that might be equivalent to what we’re using on Windows: 1. First up Git Git - Downloading for macOS <https://git-scm.com/downloads/mac> . Any pointers on whether to go with Homebrew, MacPorts or XCode? We are likely to be fans of git-gui and gitk. 2. I find icon overlays a necessary feature to provide general situational awareness. Such as TortoiseGit – Windows Shell Interface to Git <https://tortoisegit.org/> , but that is Windows only. SnailGit: Git for Finder on the Mac <https://apps.apple.com/us/app/snailgit-git-for-finder/id847260112?mt=12> App Store looks like it is similar. Anything else the comes with icon overlays? Free? 3. Text Editors that have Therion syntax stylers. contrib:externaleditors [Therion wiki] <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/contrib:externaleditors?s%5b%5d=mac> suggests BBEdit and Brackets with stylers by Xavier Robert. Which of these is best Xavier? Other options? 4. Therion. I assume ladislavb/homebrew-therion <https://github.com/ladislavb/homebrew-therion> is the latest, superseding tbe:wiki1 [Therion wiki] <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/tbe:wiki1?s%5b%5d=os> and masox [Therion wiki] <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/masox?s%5b%5d=os> 5. Xpdf. XpdfReader <https://www.xpdfreader.com/> 6. Is anyone running TopoDroid in an Android emulator on mac? Feedback and suggestions welcome. Thanks Bruce

I don't know anything much about the specifics you asked but I had a mac for a short while, and helped someone recently. I found homebrew let me install all the stuff I needed without having to get an apple account. But you do need to work out how to make sure things you install are found on the path, because (some?) things don't get installed in system binary paths, they put in their own app buckets. So to have survex be found and work properly (whcih helps therion), you need to add the survex location to your path. Same for latex so that therion can find it. For Tunnel (whcih you probably don't use), there is a config variable: TN.survexexeccutabledir and a path which can be set in symbols/fontcolours.xml (lines like "<survex_executable_directory name="/usr/bin/"/>), and then probably re-run brew. hope that helps a bit. Macs don't make life easy for this stuff. Wookey -- Principal hats: Wookware, Debian http://wookware.org/ Matrix: @wookey:matrix.org

I am not sure, but you should be able to install Therion and all the necessary dependencies through HomeBrew : https://brew.sh/ You will also probably need the Xcode-command lines tools (no need to install the complete XCode environment) if Homebrew do not install it. If needed you will find tons of website explaining how to install it. To install Therion with Homebrew, follow then this wiki : https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/os-tips:osx (I am not sure that Therion is up-to-date with this method). Personally, I generally install Therion from sources that I download from Github or from the Therion website. For that ,follow this page (do not take in account the « Preparation for old version 0.3.10!) : https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/os-tips:osx10.8
I find icon overlays a necessary feature to provide general situational awareness. Such as TortoiseGit – Windows Shell Interface to Git <https://tortoisegit.org/>, but that is Windows only. Now I am using VS-codium (https://vscodium.com/), I find it more convenient than the other. I installed the plugin for Therion : https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=rhystyers.therion / https://github.com/rhyst/vscode-therion-language. It works very well ! If I good remember, you will need to install it from file, you will not be able to install it directly through the marketplace (that only work with VSCode)
Therion. I assume ladislavb/homebrew-therion <https://github.com/ladislavb/homebrew-therion> is the latest, superseding tbe:wiki1 [Therion wiki] <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/tbe:wiki1?s%5b%5d=os> and masox [Therion wiki] <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/masox?s%5b%5d=os> Xpdf. XpdfReader <https://www.xpdfreader.com/> I am also on mac, I use the native Preview app. I like the fact that I can run compilation even if the pdf export is open in Preview. See https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/contrib:externalviewers
Good luck ! Xavier
