Extended elevations with survex data
by John Pybus 29 Nov '07

29 Nov '07

Hi, I'm trying to create an extended elevation of a cave. I have the centreline data as survex files and have created an extended version of the .3d using the survex "extend" command with a specfile to specify at which points the elevation switches direction. I have created a .th file like so: survey texa-elev import texa_extend.3d input elev_top.th2 endsurvey but therion doesn't respect the changes of direction in texa_extend.3d and extends it all out to the right which doesn't correspond to the drawings in elev_top.th2 and produces very corrupted output. Is there a way to correct this and tell therion where the switches in direction are? Cheers, John

Label printing in pdf
by Christian Rößler (Roessler) 21 Nov '07

21 Nov '07

Hallo everybody, so, after compiling everything I am again at taking first steps in Therion. I am following advice at the Therion wiki <http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php?id=tfc:31433>, and at first I am trying to insert a label. That's successful so far, but I cannot get these labels to be printed in the resulting pdf. So I suspect, perhaps there is something missing in the layout I gave? I use: (everything in one line, of course - just got folded by emil client) | source eisenbach_hotel.th | layout eisenbach_export | north true | scale 1 100 | units metric | grid bottom | page-grid on | grid-size 100 100 100 metres | legend on | language de | statistics explo all | statistics topo all | statistics carto all | statistics copyright all | statistics topo-length on | statistics explo-length on | scale-bar 10 m | debug on | endlayout | export map -projection plan -o eisenbach_hotel.xvi | export map -projection plan -layout eisenbach_export -layout-color map-fg | 90 -output Eisenbach.pdf -fmt pdf (one line, of course) In the file .th2 the label point was successfully inserted: | point 1205.0 717.0 label -text "Eisenmuffe" But this label will not show in the pdf file, which otherwise seems to be ok (centerline, linepoints of survey and outline of lrud are drawn). I have the feeling I am forgetting something. Anyone has a hint? Best regards, Christian

Compiling question - thbezier.cxx
by Christian Rößler (Roessler) 21 Nov '07

21 Nov '07

Good evening, just a little question; I am again at it, compiling therion. Well, when make'ing I got following error: | c++ -c -Wall -DTHLINUX -O2 -o thbezier.o thbezier.cxx | thbezier.cxx: In function ‘void chord_length_parameterize(const NR_Point*, | double*, unsigned int)’: | thbezier.cxx:1205: error: ‘stderr’ was not declared in this scope | thbezier.cxx:1206: error: ‘fprintf’ was not declared in this scope | make: *** [thbezier.o] Fehler 1 ...and, ah well, stderror and fprintf has a smell I know, so to say. So I opened thbezier.cxx and insterted to the include lines | #include "stdio.h" and it compiles through (at least thbezier.cxx). But this is... a bit too easy. Is this the right way, or do I have an error elsewhere (as usual), perhaps? Greetings, Christian

Scaling text and text orientation
by Bruce Mutton 20 Nov '07

20 Nov '07

As with most drawing packages, it seems that one needs to have the final presentation scale in mind when placing text labels within scraps. Change the output scale up or down, and the labels either move very far away from the drawing, or overlap and over power the drawing. This is a shame because most of the other features are fairly scale independent. I can use the scale and basescale commands, and <left> and <br> etc to counteract this to some extent. Is there a way to place a text label, say ON a pitch line, and tell therion, label this pitch "10 P" and left justify the text it out to the right-hand side, just beyond the displayed passage wall, so that it always displays just clear of the drawing? Also I notice that text with orientation 0 degrees prints at an angle equal to the declination, which is 22 degrees here abouts these days. Is there a better way to straighten the text than give it all an orientation of 338 degrees to compensate? If I want to present two maps, say one at 1:500 scale, and one at 1:2000 scale, I would want many labels on the former and few labels on the latter. Can this be done with one set of scraps, or would I have to create duplicates and adjust the labels in one of the sets? Again, thank you for your patience Bruce

Hello together, I recognised an error when drawing a pillar in a room; in 3D model the room is not displayed accurate. (Therion 0.5.1) Glück Tief, Stefan Oswald

Getting Scraps into the plans and elevations
by Bruce Mutton 18 Nov '07

18 Nov '07

A breakthrough, thanks to Ben "Create point station, and name it with a station name within your survey (note that this is -name and not -id)." My simple misunderstanding and error was to try to make scrap survey station -id match survey centreline station numbers. Very counterintuitive, due to the interface not having a dedicated -name input box, and the object display area listing -id's but not -names. I guess that's why we help each other! At the risk of asking the same questions as recently answered posts. 1. Why does my centreline disappear beyond the extent of the scrap plotted? Whether I process just SurveyN.th or TheWholeCaveWithManySurveysINDEX.th I only get my first ever little scrap. I'd like to see it in context with my centreline with passage shading in the same output document. Loch seems to modify the passage with scraps while retaining all the passage with only centreline and LRUD data. I get the feeling I need to include the survey within the map command somehow, but no luck. 2. What is wrong with the following .th2 syntax created by the map editor interface? point 419.25 -243.0 label -orientation 0.0 Greenlink Entrance It triggers an error "-- unknown option - Greenlink" when I had hoped that it would plot the text on the drawing. If I comment out the line it works fine, just no labels! 3. I do like the way the .lox model follows the walls drawn on the scrap! Will it do the same if I create elevation scraps? Or only if I create extended elevation scraps? I have attached a complete self contained set of files that I using to experiment with these concepts. Regards Bruce

authors of scraps
by Martin Sluka 18 Nov '07

18 Nov '07

Just a note: Try to add in options field of definition of your scraps something as -author 2007 "Martin Sluka". It will produce the line in map header: "Drawn by: Martin Sluka 2007" so anybody may see who is responsible for that mess :). If several mappers work together on large project it is possible to recognize later who drawn the particular scrap. Martin

Spikes and shadow passage in Loch output
by Stelios Zacharias 16 Nov '07

16 Nov '07

Dear all, I have some artefacts appearing in my loch output of a cave I am working on. I have attached the lox file zipped. The cave is split into two scraps, although I do not think this is causing the problem. The first difficulty is the appearance of a shadow passage, in the south and west of the diagram. The passage should be in the blue zone for depth, but there is a high echo and a sloping line unconnected to either the high echo or the actual passage. The scrap border is at the meeting point of the three. The other problem concerns spikes either upwards or downwards which appear usually in chambers. Two examples of this might be seen at the far eastern end of the survey. If the .th and .th2 files are needed for investigation, I would be happy to send them. I look forward to any hints that might be shared. Thanks, Stelios Zacharias Stelios Zacharias SELAS Caving Club Pasionos 44-46 Athens - 116 31 Greece www.selas.org Skype: stelzac

Re: [Therion] Patch for wx2.8 and 64-bit issues
by Christian Rößler (Roessler) 16 Nov '07

16 Nov '07

Good evening, I have read about the need to upgrade to therion 0.5.1. So I am busy at work compiling. Unfortunately it fails with the line | lxRender.cxx:(.text+0x59a): undefined reference to `vtk_png_write_end' So I searched, and found the archived thread "Patch for wx2.8 and 64-bit issues", noticed the patch there talks about lxRenderer. I also use wx2.8 on x86-64, so I thought the patch would apply to me. There was no mention of the failing line, so I presume it would be the same. I have 0.5.1 from the actual download at therion.speleo.sk. But applying the patch file to loch/lxRender.cxx fails with | patching file loch/lxRender.cxx | patch: **** malformed patch at line 12: @@ -439,7 +439,7 @@ I read in that post about the name problem, so I searched lxRender.cxx for wxSAVE successfully, and so it seems my lxRender.cxx needs patching. Is there a svn where I can check it out? Or has anyone an already patched lxRender.cxx fitting 0.5.1, and can send it to me by email, please? Best regards, Christian
