For JM Begley - Rebuild for Fedora 32
by Bill Gee 08 May '20

08 May '20

If it is not already in progress ... The Therion package in JM Begley's COPR repository needs to be rebuilt so it works on Fedora 32. When I try to run the upgrade from F31 to F32, it gives me this: ================ <snip...> Problem 3: package therion-5.4.4-2.fc31.x86_64 requires libproj.so.13()(64bit), but none of the providers can be installed - proj-5.2.0-5.fc31.x86_64 does not belong to a distupgrade repository - problem with installed package therion-5.4.4-2.fc31.x86_64 <snip ...> ================= Thanks! -- Bill Gee

Therion does not write valid colour by horizontal or vertical error data to 3d output
by Bruce Mutton 26 Apr '20

26 Apr '20

A while back Survex 1.43 improved the ability of Aven to visualise loop misclosures. Not only can it colour by error, it can now colour by horizontal or vertical loop error. Unfortunately, the 3d files produced by Therion do not properly write the data. A brief discussion here https://github.com/ojwb/survex/commit/fe8a1b478b91bd977a4b21be49af25724b16c6 92 that identifies the problem. Olly suggests the problem is: -Therion writes 0 for all the horz and vert error values where Survex is being used for data processing. -Therion equates the horz and vertical error to the total error where Therion does its own data processing. For users who want a work around, there is one described in the last line of the thread linked above. Bruce

Hatching profiles and extended elevations
by Roger Schuster 19 Apr '20

19 Apr '20

Hello cavers, at least in Germany it is/was usual to add hatching to extended elevations and profiles (cross sections) like in the following example: I guess it will be difficult to do this in Therion because the hatching is outside of the passage and will be clipped but anyway: Is there a way to achieve this? Is it possible to add an arrow to lines of type section indicating the viewing direction like in this example: Thank you! Best regards, Roger

Sketches on doesn't work / legacy survey
by Roger Schuster 19 Apr '20

19 Apr '20

Hello cavers, currently I try to work with some legacy survey which are the original survey data and the final map with scale bar but without marked stations. My intention is to geo-reference the existing map (i.e. attaching the entrance location to the UTM grid) and use it in a cave atlas of the area. I don't want to redraw the whole map in Therion. I followed the directions given in the therion wiki and entered the survey data and the resulting model in Loch looks fine and plausible. After that I created a scrap with the scanned map (projection plan) and scaled it using the scale bar and the scaling tool of Xtherion map editor. I marked the location of the first survey station at the cave entrance and in the layout section of my thconfig I turned on sketch export. Unfortunately it doesn't work. The generated pdf only contains the map header (with wrong length and depth statistics btw!) and a short part of the first survey shot. I expect the whole scanned background image to be visible and in scale in the pdf. Honestly said I never got the "sketches on" working with any of my old and new maps. What I am doing wrong? Any pointer to the right direction is highly appreciated. Best regards and thanks in advance, Roger

disc and disk symbol names
by Bruce Mutton 14 Apr '20

14 Apr '20

While looking at extending the current mi: translation I noticed that there may be a lack of consistency with the en: spelling of disc/disk. A table from the current texts.txt shows what we have a present. Therion syntax name en translation therion: point disc-pillar en: disc on pillar therion: point disc-pillars en: discs on pillars therion: point disc-stalactite en: disc on stalactite therion: point disc-stalactites en: discs on stalactites therion: point disc-stalagmite en: disc on stalagmite therion: point disc-stalagmites en: discs on stalagmites therion: point disk en: disk After consulting with a venerable caver who lives nearby, and happens to be a linguist, and checking with a bit of googling myself, it seems to me that 'disk' is favoured by US English and for things like computer disks, and 'disc' is favoured by UK English and for things like plates or ploughing discs. So would there be any objection to changing Therion's texts.txt to include: en: disc. # use disc for generic English translations en_UK: disc. and # use disc for UK English en_US: disk. # use disk for US English in all cases? And another thing. I'm wondering if the current point disk is referring to what are also commonly known as shields? In which case: therion: point disk en: disc, shield might be a better translation for 'point disk'? Bruce

Command line Therion on Windows
by Rhys Tyers 05 Apr '20

05 Apr '20

Hello, I have therion data repo that has been mainly worked on by linux/mac users. Now I'm trying to work on it in Windows. Using the xtherion gui works fine, but if I try to use the therion.exe directly on the command line (like I would in linux) then it fails because all the file paths have forward slashes rather than back slashes. Is there a way to get command line therion to run on files with linux style file paths? I assume there must be because xtherion manages it somehow. Thanks, Rhys

Re: [Therion] Running Xtherion on Mac OS X Catalina
by David Eason 02 Apr '20

Thanks for the suggestion Phil (and others). I finally fixed this, but it feels like a bit of a hack. I placed the folder containing the bwidget-1.9.14 scripts for tcl/tk into the directory /usr/local/Cellar/tcl-tk/8.6.10/lib/tcl8.6 as this was already on the tcl auto_path. Wish then starts and Xtherion happily runs. I'm not sure why, but setting auto_path in the tcl shell did not work. I could set it once, and then run a package require BWidget command, and Wish would start up, but then any subsequent commands would fail to find it, and location of the scripts was not located on the auto_path. Perhaps this is something to do with permissions? I'm not sure. I'm running therion 5.4.4 (+543a8b1). Running Xtherion on Mac OS X Catalina
by David Eason 01 Apr '20

01 Apr '20

Dear Therion mailing list, I wonder if anyone has had any success building, installing and running Therion on Mac OS X Catalina (OS 10.15.2)? I have successfully built and installed Therion 5.4.4, and Therion and Loch both run fine. Before the upgrade, everything worked OK, but it looks like some things have moved around in this version of OS X, amongst other things breaking. When I try to run Xtherion, Tcl/Tk can't seem to locate BWidget, and the GUI can't run: Error in startup script: can't find package BWidget while executing "package require BWidget" (file "/usr/local/bin/xtherion" line 12268) I have tried unpacking the bwidget 1.9.14 scripts to /usr/local/lib thinking that tcl would check there, and then also tried to set auto_path to force tcl to look in there, but it won't seem to start up. There's a pause, and Wish seems to start up, and yet XQuartz actually opens; I have tcl 8.6 installed and can run the tclsh OK. It's been frustrating me for a while, and I saw this lockdown in the UK as an opportunity to have another look at this. Any pointers or tips would be most welcome. Regards, David Eason
