RESOLVED: Therion 5.5.1 broken surface image
by Bruce Mutton 06 Jul '20

Thanks Martin and Stacho The latest development version e66c699 has resolved the issue. pdfTeX can now find surface images with ./ and ../ in the file path. Bruce From: Therion <therion-bounces(a)speleo.sk> On Behalf Of Bruce Mutton Sent: Sunday, 5 July 2020 10:14 To: 'List for Therion users' <therion(a)speleo.sk> Subject: [Therion] Therion 5.5.1 broken surface image Morning Therion 5.5.1 has broken something that has worked up until and including 5.5.0. I'm tentatively thinking it only affects exports with surface images. Same thing occurs with two of them, and all the exports I have tried without surface images are fine so far. Here is the error that 5.5.1 produces. !pdfTeX error: pdftex.exe: cannot find image file ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! ##################### end of pdftex log file ##################### C:\Program Files (x86)\Therion\therion.exe: error -- pdftex exit code -- 1 writing xtherion file ... done Interesting, because the image file IS there, and if I install 5.5.0 an output is produced. Here is synopsis of what seems to be material differences in the log files. Looks like maybe the new version of MetaPost Is not parsing the surface image properly. Bruce

Order of calls - symbol-hide doesn't work
by Bruce Mutton 01 Jul '20

01 Jul '20

Thanks for that insight Tarquin I have intuitively followed the principles you set out, for the most part, but not entirely, and I would not have thought that setting a symbol-set would override symbol-show -hide statements. I had written a few words about this some years ago here https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/bds?s[]=order#order_of_layout_functions_call… but I see that it is not quite best practice. I will rewrite it soon. I think I have always got away with less than perfect layout statement ordering, because I tend to have layouts that are tightly constrained to particular topics. ie scales, statistics, northarrows or whatever. Anyway, symbol-set, symbol-assign, symbol redefinitions, then specific symbol-hide or -show with layout file copys somewhere in the middle seems like a sensible rule of thumb. Bruce -----Original Message----- From: Therion <therion-bounces(a)speleo.sk> On Behalf Of Tarquin Wilton-Jones via Therion Sent: Wednesday, 1 July 2020 08:40 To: therion(a)speleo.sk Cc: Tarquin Wilton-Jones <tarquin.wilton-jones(a)ntlworld.com> Subject: Re: [Therion] symbol-hide doesn't work Your problem is the order of your statements: layout local symbol-hide group centerline symbol-set UIS These directives are processed in order, so if the second one overrides the symbol hiding, it will win. "symbol-set UIS" includes centreline symbols defined as a line. It is defined second, so it overrides the line before it. You need to swap the lines around: layout local symbol-set UIS #overall symbol set symbol-hide group centerline #override specifics In the same way, your .thconfig file's "layout local" says "copy LayoutScalebar1". I guess that is defined in: F:\Omri\Therion\Layout\StdFiles\LayoutStandards.thc You did not share that file, so I cannot be certain if it also could cause problems. You copy that layout *after* you set the symbol-hide. If LayoutScalebar1 overrides the symbol hiding, it will win. This is risky: layout local symbol-hide group centerline ... copy LayoutScalebar1 This is better: layout local copy LayoutScalebar1 symbol-hide group centerline This is probably not causing problems in your particular case, but this is why I always do my "copy" statements first, then the local layout settings afterwards, so I never bump into this kind of hidden problem. Hope this helps. Tarquin _______________________________________________ Therion mailing list Therion(a)speleo.sk https://mailman.speleo.sk/listinfo/therion

epsg:3794 - PROJ4 library: -1 (no arguments in initialization list)
by Rhys Tyers 30 Jun '20

30 Jun '20

Hello, I'm trying to compile a therion config and am getting the following error: therion: error -- PROJ4 library: -1 (no arguments in initialization list) The repo and file I'm attempting to compile: https://github.com/tr1813/migresurvey/blob/master/data/_config/overview/sys… This works for for someone on OSX and another on Windows but not for me on Ubuntu 20.04. I tried searching for the error but there wasn't anything enlightening. It compiles if I comment out "epsg:3794" so I'm guessing perhaps my version of the proj library does not have this coordinate system? Could I build a more up to date version? Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks, Rhys

Need metapost wizard: new text label
by Benedikt Hallinger 16 Jun '20

16 Jun '20

Hi there, i need some new point symbol (text label). Its a simple text on white color within a box with rounded corners, like the attached image. My metapostskills are not good enough to get this to work... For now i would be happy to have such a user point symbol. It would be important that it scales well and react to xtherions direction setting. Optional it would be cool if the default symbol could show the current survey identifier of the nearest station in the scrap and maybe also the nearest next survey. But this information could also be maintained manually for now. Is there someone here for my rescue? :) Thanks in advance, Beni

North arrow and magnetic declination
by Bill Gee 02 Jun '20

02 Jun '20

Hello everyone - I was looking at some of the sample code on the wiki for alternate north arrows. At least two of them display both geographic north and magnetic north. Those are northarrow4 and northarrow4a, both by Dirk Peinelt. My question is this: What date is used when calculating the offset angle for the magnetic north arrow? This is especially relevant for caves that have been surveyed over a period of years. The declination changes from year to year, and sometimes more often than that. There are at least four possibilities: 1) The date of the first survey. 2) The date of the most recent survey. 3) A date about half-way between the first and last surveys. This assumes that the declination change is somewhat linear over time. 4) The date the map is compiled. Does anyone know which date is used? For me this is mostly academic. I am just curious! I have never used a north arrow that shows both geographic and magnetic north. Most of the maps I make are for caves in Missouri. The magnetic declination is less than 1 degree. It is almost irrelevant here. Thanks! -- Bill Gee

extend
by Marco Corvi 02 Jun '20

02 Jun '20

i think that extend should take values in the interval [-1,1], ie also fractional values, plus some special value such as "ignore" to open loops, and "undefined" to let the program choose, because it's a nuisance to enter a decimal number for every shot (legs + splays). therion uses the left/right normal/reverse etc. solution, and users should be allowed to set extend also for splays, if they need to. for now, let's use left/right/vert, and ignore only to open loops btw, are vertical extend considered in the computation of the cave length by therion ? marco
