Flowstone symbols

Hi all Wookey wrote... > Mike - I have an interest in this too - mulu has large flowstone areas > which are currently poorly (artistically) represented. I'd be happy to > compare notes. Well now that flowstone as an area is in Therion we can look at tweaking the metapost code. The ASF's images for flowstone is at: http://www.caves.org.au/m_stab-1c.html#6.0 It differs from gour pools in that the gour symbols all join or touch each other whereas the flowstone symbols are all separate. In the metapost code below I have increased the horizontal and vertical spacing a bit and my wife Jill thinks its pretty close now to the ASF symbol on the web. code metapost beginpattern(pattern_flowstone); pickup PenC; p:=(-.35u,0){dir -60} .. {dir 60}(0.35u,0); draw p; draw p shifted (0.35u,0.4u); # was (0.35u,0.3u) patternxstep(1.0u); # was 0.7 patternystep(0.8u); # was 0.6 endpattern; def a_flowstone_ASF (expr Path) = T:=identity; thclean Path; thfill Path withpattern pattern_flowstone; enddef; endcode Now .... rotation. We draw flowstone and gours oriented to the direction that they are in the cave. I think they are pretty much the only area fills that we orient. The rest like mad, sand, clay, moonmilk etc are all unorientated. Mike Lake

Help with a flowstone symbol for ASF.
by Mike Lake 27 Feb '07

Hi all I am trying to do a flowstone symbol for the ASF. In thconfig I have this: layout mypage scale 1 200 base-scale 1 100 symbol-set ASF code metapost beginpattern(pattern_flowstone_ASF); pickup PenC; draw (-.5u,.5u){dir -70} .. {dir 70}(.5u,.5u); patternxstep(1.0u); patternystep(0.5u); endpattern; def a_flowstone_ASF (expr Path) = T:=identity; thclean Path; thfill Path withpattern pattern_flowstone_ASF; enddef; endcode symbol-assign area flowstone ASF endlayout Im getting this errori when I run therion: therion: error -- thconfig [76] -- thconfig [76] -- unknown symbol specification -- area flowstone The pattern Im wanting is based on this draw (-.5u,.5u){dir -70} .. {dir 70}(.5u,.5u); which looks like this \__/ and what I would like to have is this: \__/\__/\__/\__/\__/\__/\__/\__/ \__/\__/\__/\__/\__/\__/\__/\__/ \__/\__/\__/\__/\__/\__/\__/\__/ \__/\__/\__/\__/\__/\__/\__/\__/ I see in the thArea.mp that some patterns are done using the mpattern package and use a beginpattern (e.g. pattern_water_UIS) while others seem to just use a for loop (e.g. a_sand_UIS) and dont use the mpattern package. Should one use the mpattern macro over more complex mpost code if its suitable? Mike -- Mike Lake Caver, Linux enthusiast and interested in anything technical.

bedding planes on cross sections?
by Carlos \"Guâno\" Grohmann 25 Feb '07

25 Feb '07

I was drawing some cross sections of a recently mapped cave, but want to draw the lines representing the bedding planes of the rock. If I just draw them outside the passage walls, they won't be shown on the final map, and if I draw a invisible wall outside the passage and the bedding planes lines, the interior of the passage will be trated as a pillar, since there will be a wall inside a wall. So, is there a way to draw lines outside of a wall and get them to show on the map? Carlos BTW, I just added some projects we are working with Therion here in Brazil in the Wiki. -- +-----------------------------------------------------------+ Carlos Henrique Grohmann - Guano Geologist M.Sc - Doctorate Student at IGc-USP - Brazil Linux User #89721 - carlos dot grohmann at gmail dot com +-----------------------------------------------------------+ _________________ "Good morning, doctors. does the loch-model export handles surface bitmaps together with surface grids ? i know that one can get a neat grey surface if he/she uses a grid. is it possible to put a bitmap on it instead of the grey blanket ? marco

metapost symbols
by Stefan Oswald 14 Feb '07

14 Feb '07

Hello, here are the results of our Therion meeting yesterday; An idea would be to add the factor for density/size of symbols in the source code and adjust these variables in the map editor by a -density {} command in the mapeditor\area\options. Also a -diameter {} command for block points would allow to change block size of each point individually. #POINT BLOCK +size adjust (symbolsize) code metapost def p_blocks_UIS (expr pos, theta,sc,al)= symbolsize:=1.0u; %Factor*u; Factor=size of the blocks U:=(.5u,.5u); T:=identity aligned al rotated theta scaled sc shifted pos; pickup PenC; thdraw (.0symbolsize,.0symbolsize)--(1.0symbolsize,-.5symbolsize)--(0.0symbolsize,-1.5symbolsize)--(-1.0symbolsize,-1.0symbolsize)--cycle; thdraw (.5symbolsize,-.25symbolsize)--(1.0symbolsize,.5symbolsize)--(0.0symbolsize,1.5symbolsize)--(-0.5symbolsize,.5symbolsize); thdraw (.0symbolsize,.0symbolsize)--(.0symbolsize,.5symbolsize)--(-1.5symbolsize,.5symbolsize)--(-1.5symbolsize,-0.5symbolsize)--(-0.5symbolsize,-0.5symbolsize); enddef; endcode #AREA BLOCK +density adjust (distance) code metapost def a_blocks (expr p) = distance:=1; T:=identity; pickup PenC; path q, qq; q = bbox p; picture tmp_pic; uu := max(u, (xpart urcorner q - xpart llcorner q)/100, (ypart urcorner q - ypart llcorner q)/100); tmp_pic := image( for i = xpart llcorner q step distance*uu until xpart urcorner q: for j = ypart llcorner q step distance*uu until ypart urcorner q: qq := punked (((-.5uu,-.5uu)--(.5uu,-.5uu)--(.5uu,.5uu)--(-.5uu,.5uu)--cycle) randomized (uu/2)) rotated uniformdeviate(360) shifted ((i,j) randomized 1.0uu); if xpart (p intersectiontimes qq) < 0: thclean qq; thdraw qq; fi; endfor; endfor; ); clip tmp_pic to p; draw tmp_pic; enddef; endcode greetings, Stefan

extended section
by marco corvi 12 Feb '07

12 Feb '07

hi, i have a question. i have a loop to adjust, if i do not equate stations in extended section there is an altitude gap between them. of course therion does not know they are at the same altitude (or depth). if i equate, the drawing is awfully distorted because therion tries to draw them at the same point. is there a way to tell therion that two stations are at the same altitude (depth) ? (but to draw them separately). thanks, marco

Best structure to use for using 3d files.
by Michael Lake 12 Feb '07

12 Feb '07

Hi all I'm very confused over the heirarcchy of stations in therion and survex when used together. Two email threads have been very useful but Im still confused. Date: Mon, 19 Dec 2005 From: Andrew Atkinson Subject: [Therion] Nesting surveys Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2006 From: Wookey Subject: [Therion] Dataset structure including survex files Nevertheless even with the help of the above emails I'm still lost. The wiki docs and the thbookdocs cover mostly using survey data in therion format but I'll be wishing to use 3d files from the top level. From what I understand of the above email threads that seems the best way to go for a new project where others will be using survex but not therion. I have got a therion dataset working and it's attached as a tarball. But I seem to have to add empty survey containers in like this into cave.th survey rect -title "The rectangle cave" endsurvey survey extra -title "The extra bit" endsurvey Also how does one get the full pathname of stations displayed on the PDF ie like rect.1, rect.2 instead of just 1,2 etc Also how can one get all the stations labelled on the PDF without having to assign a point to them manually in therion map editor? Can one get lines betwwen the stations instead of just the "little flying bat" symbols? i.e. a centerline line. Finally whats the suggestions for the best structure/layout to sue for using just 3d files for the data. You see I was thinking of putting survex data into surveys/ and therion scraps into maps/ Mike Mike Lake
