cross-section drawing
by Wookey 26 Dec '06

26 Dec '06

Thanx to Marco for his really useful therion by example (although none of the pictures appear for me in the dillo browser - is this a feature of the way the wiki works, or are they currently missing?) I have started drawing cross-sections. It's incredibly tedious. I hope I am missing some tricks to speed things up. Drawing the x-sect line, point and outline is OK. But the part about the scrap-scale is a real faff. My x-sects are drawn on the plan alongside the cave, and their natural scale is 'the same as the plan'. It would be nice if there was some way to specify the scale as 'like scrap foo'. On non-graph paper it is very hard to determine the correct 'real size'. Nothing in the drawing view shows me scale to guestimate from. I had to go and run aven to get the length of a nearby leg which had stations marked on the drawing, then compare that to the x-sect size. This is why 'same scale as scrap foo' would be so useful. The biggest problem is finding the corner-markers. Took me a little while to realise they were only visible when the scrap line is selected. But then on a large scan they are impossible to find. The only way I could find them was click on a section point and note co-ords, go back to the scrap line and type in the co=ords so that the red marker appears over the section point and can be moved to the top-right/bottom-left corner. Especially when you have a load of xsects to do, all of which have the same scale, some better way is needed than the above. How do others do it? I have added a para to Marco's doc on the wiki about this. BTW I want to put this (marco's) doc into the Debian Therion package as it is really useful. Can we generate HTML from the current wiki version easily? (I think this may have been answered before - must check the archive). bug in 0.4.1

If you add a line label with -text "Name<br>2ndline (i.e forgetting to close quote), then save the file you get an error about unclosed quotes and xtherion hangs. Area border problems
by Wookey 24 Dec '06

24 Dec '06

The latest version of terikan.pdf and terikanatlas.pdf are at http://wookware.org/mulu/ I have now understood the use of select and maps to get the layers and previews I want (cool!) Some queries: 1) Why can I click on the internal hyperlinks in the preview map windows and the level labels ('high level passages' etc), but not the page-numbers indicated to N,S,E,W ? They all work on one of the example atlas maps. Do I need to add a rune to enable this? 2) Area problems: See the river (blue :-) ) on the upper half of the survey, 'riverlelvel passages'. (easier on the single-sheet survey). Between the labels 'Arrow inlet' and 'River passage' there is a 25m diameter rock pillar on north side which has got coloured in blue. I tried reversing the line but it's still deemed to be part of the water area. Why? A bit further east the area has inlcuded a couple more rock pillars and a mudbank that should be between them. This bring up the whole issue of pillars inside areas. What is the correct way to indicate these? (There are quite a few rocks in the river with a similar problem. Further easy still (just before 'sump three') the area has gone all strange where it should be bounded by a mudbank border and some rocks. I'm not sure what is going on here. This whole area is a complex one with a lot of edge segments. 3) Currently if a passage is coloured then all the closed loops within it (blocks/rocks/boulders) come out with a double-tint as the colour is presumably applied twice. I don't think I really want this - rocks should be the same colour as the passages they are in. How do we fix this? 4) river colour. How do the metapost colours work. 3 RGb values? rising or falling? I want to make the river/water a much lighter blue but I tried fiddling with the numbers and above (0, 0, 0.95) was as good as I could get. Perhaps what I really need is some cyan, or maybe a transparency/saturation setting. Suggestions? That'll do for today :-) mulu.tgz contains a tarball of the cdata with e all the pics and maps and other huge files taken out. Re: [Therion] 0.4.0 ...
by ohc＠vt.edu 24 Dec '06

I would really like to merge repositories. My work is fairly independent of the current therion development so it should be trival to merge. My svn is not updated with the newest snapshot. The cmake currently only works under linux. :( This is mostly because I haven't had time to port it to Windows or OSX. I have only attempted port it to Windows once. After about 45 minutes of cursing my frustration at Windows, I decide I had better things to do... Also, I don't own OSX or a mac. This makes it sorta hard to port/test on that platform. I can get access to OSX through school but I fear it will be a big pain to get it working. Steelwool

Why no rock point symbol?
by Wookey 22 Dec '06

22 Dec '06

There are point symbols for blocks and peddles and debris and roots and all sorts of things but not 'a rock' which would be a really well-used one if it existed... It's tiresome drawing the outline for a small rock, or a few of them. It should be at least somewhat dandomised in order to look good but even a standard (scaleable) rock would suffice. Is there a good reason why we don't have this? (you can tell when I start using therion again can't you :-) I'll have some more questions later ) Wookey -- Aleph One Ltd, Bottisham, CAMBRIDGE, CB5 9BA, UK Tel +44 (0) 1223 811679 work: http://www.aleph1.co.uk/ play: http://wookware.org/

atlas map queries
by Wookey 21 Dec '06

21 Dec '06

I just made my first atlas map. I am getting the hang of it but note that there are a couple of problems. See http://wookware.org/mulu/terikanatlas.pdf (this is not at all finished - in fact it's a bit of mess right now but it illustrates the problems below) 1) There are various blank pages. Why is this? e.g. page17,18,19 2) Note that whenever the cave crosses the 'edge of atlas page' line there is a fill glitch: Left hand side page 1, Right hand uppper page 2 svn of dataset available at svn://wookware.org/mulusurvey (mail or IRC me for the password). These plots done on therion 0.3.10 as I am having problems with 0.4.0. More soon. How do I change the water symbol
by Wookey 21 Dec '06

21 Dec '06

The xisting water shading sysmbol doesn't work at all well at small scales. The lines merge and I just get a black area for both open water and sumps. See http://wookware.org/mulu/terikan.pdf for an example of how bad it looks. We need to change the symbol so the lines get further apart at smaller scales, or perhaps make the default symbol just 'blue', as blue water makes a lot of sense. Can I do that? Not sure what to do for sumps in that case. darker blue? Changing the hatch-spacing with scale might be difficult. But if I just know how to to change it, then I can presumably redefine the symbol in my overall layout file which would have the desired effect. How do I change the water symbol? texlive support in therion
by Wookey 14 Dec '06

14 Dec '06

Hi guys, I have a (now rather old) wishlist bug #356368 from you kindly requesting therion support texlive. I would be very pleased to do this but feel that my tex competence is insufficient to decide what dependencies are needed, and whether and other changes should be made. So I am asking for help/advice. Therion is probably an unusual tex user in that it largely doesn't use it for text. It uses metapost to draw caves and pdftex to spit out PDF files. There is some text processing in the labelling and legends, where text macros can be included. See http://therion.speleo.sk/2D.php for some idea of the output. It also has an unconventional layout in terms of tex integration. Early releases included the metafont and tex files in the usual place in the distribution but this caused problems on non-debian platforms (particualrly windows and mac) so now the macros are included directly into the therion binary and squirted into tex/metapost by the program at runtime. This is not a very Debian way of doing things, but it makes installation easy on all platforms so I am a little reluctant to try and revert it all. I suspect none of this makes any difference to texlive support but I thought I should explain how things operate. Please continue the cross-post to the therion list if you have any 'does it use foo' type questions, as I probably don't really know. If someone could download the source and take a quick look to tell us which bits of texlive we should be depending on, or make suggestions from the above info, that would be very helpful, and I will include it in the 0.4.0 release I am just about to put in experimental. You can have a preview of it here: svn checkout svn://wookware.org/therion/ Although for the purposes of texlive compatibility I think the existing 0.3.10 in debian testing will be just as good. Thanx for your help. Wookey -- Aleph One Ltd, Bottisham, CAMBRIDGE, CB5 9BA, UK Tel +44 (0) 1223 811679 work: http://www.aleph1.co.uk/ play: http://wookware.org/

Re: [Therion] SQL Export
by Thierry Gonon 05 Dec '06

05 Dec '06

Sorry, but the dxf produced by therion can't be read by GRASS. I've found a solution : I make the dxf export in therion. After that, I open it with CanvasX, and save it as a shapefile (.shp), that GRASS imports quite well !! I will describe it more precisely in the wiki in a few days !!
