Scrap is too large to process in metapost in this scale
by Footleg 09 Mar '11

09 Mar '11

I am working with a th2 file generated from the inkscape export plug-in. This file contains a few scraps. If I try to create a pdf from just one of the scraps in the file then I get the follow error: error -- scrap spEntSeries@Riano defined at RianoEntPlan3a.th2 [6] is too large to process in metapost in this scale -- maximal scale for this scrap is 1 : 830753 My scrap is not that large. I found that if I delete all the other scraps from the th2 file so it only contains the single scrap then the pdf generates fine. I've attached the full log file. Any ideas what is going on here? Inkscape import/export plugins
by Thomas Holder 09 Mar '11

09 Mar '11

Hi all, I wrote import and export plugins for Inkscape to edit th2-files. This is particular useful to remaster existing therion-drawings with the convenience of a quite modern vector-graphics application. The therion line/point type annotation is stored in the object label (Object Properties Dialog) and can also be altered with dialogs from "Extensions > Therion > Set..." menus. Download: http://www.thomas-holder.de/projects/inkscape-speleo/extensions/th2-latest.… Unsupported is the editing of lines with line point options, since there is no concept in SVG for this. Such lines will be marked as read-only on import. I will be happy for any feedback (if it works, if you find it useful). Cheers, Thomas Note: An earlier version of the export plugin has already been published on the therion wiki at http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php?id=inkscape but is obsolete with the new import/export plugin set.

loch surface(s)
by marco corvi 03 Mar '11

03 Mar '11

if i put two surface's it seems that therion writes both in the lox file. loch reads the first only. but it can flawlessly read and display both (just replace the if with a loop) ... although maybe they are treated as two sheets of "The Surface". that's fine and i can get nice dem with the cave and surfaces for geological planar features ... the bitmap is a bit of a problem though: only the first surface bitmap is used (ok: can comment on that test and get around it). the bitmap is applied to both sheets (=surface's). the bitmap "tiles" the surface, instead of being overlaid on it [not sure about this]. what i would like: - exporting two or more surfaces - marking one surface as "DEM" and clipping the others in Z to this, unless the option "-clip off" - loch attaching the bitmaps to their grids. replay to Alexander mail: - for the fonts you can edit xtherion init file and set your favourite fonts. the file is well commented. - for Xwindow error on loch, don't know: you may follow the instructions in the error message and debug the program, or provide the lox file that crashed it. marco

wiki in italiano
by marco corvi 02 Mar '11

02 Mar '11

This is for italian-speaking therion users ciao, ho cominciato a mettere delle pagine in italiano sul wiki di therion. per ora si tratta di "traduzioni" di pagine del wiki in inglese. ogni contributo e` ben accetto. meglio ancora se anche in inglese. se non te la senti di scrivere in inglese, non ti preoccupare: scrivi in italiano e poi qualcuno tradurra`. ciao, marco ----------------------------------------------------- translation: i started an italian section on the therion wiki. so far there is the translation from the english of a few pages of the wiki. you are welcome to contribute. it's better if you write your contributions both in italian and in english. never mind if you do not feel confortable writing in english, somebody will take care of the translation.

Lox Model showing walls from wrong side
by Andrew Atkinson 26 Feb '11

26 Feb '11

I've branched this from Converting Inkscape Drawings of very large caves intoTherion: I have experienced the stretch using 2 points, and where I have tried this is always solved by adding more points and scraps were needed, but the inside out part I do get more often. I have tried splitting into more scraps, and splitting the lines. The former works totally or reduces the incorrect bit, however a side affect is that the model is not as neat as it should be as the lox model has a 'step' on the scrap join. As demonstrated by the 2 attached set of files. But currently all this is a bit random, and the moving to a new scrap is very tedious, it would be good to have some understanding of the problems, so they could be avoided? Converting Inkscape Drawings of very large caves into Therion
by Footleg 25 Feb '11

25 Feb '11

After an excellent and most educational workshop on Therion run by Andrew Atkinson last weekend, I have finally started to get my teeth into the program. What I am attempting to do is find a way to convert surveys drawn up in other software into Therion projects without having to redraw everything. My current aim is to get the passage walls in so that I can build various models from my surveys. So far I have learned enough to get the passage walls from Inkscape into a th2 file using the Inkscape plug-in. The difficulties now come in deciding how to break these very large surveys up into managable size pieces. The XTherion map editor is unmanageably slow when I import the entire cave into a single th2 file. Right now I've not got specific questions and am finding my way OK. But I wonder has anyone already written any help on how to do what I am trying to do? Especially when to split parts of the cave into separate scraps, and how to make sure that maps drawn in separate th2 files join smoothly in the model? Some tips and guidance would be very useful to avoid pitfalls. So if someone can point me at some help (I've not managed to find any on the wiki) that would be great. If none exists then I will start making notes so that I can contribute what I learn to the wiki as an example. Footleg

web lox viewer
by Andrew Atkinson 24 Feb '11

Hi all for those of you sensible enough not to follow the ukcaving forum, this looks like a really good start to make surveys more available on the web. I have copied the writer, Chris hunter, in as he is not on the list. I personally would like to avoid flash. As I understand it, it is only a proof of concept at the moment, but Chris would welcome comments, and I hope he is planning to develop it further http://ukcaving.com/board/index.php?topic=11492.0 Andrew

grid alignment rotation
by Graham Mullan 17 Feb '11

17 Feb '11

Ben We've had similar problems, notably with some of Willie's data where he applied a correction that encompassed both compass error and declination. The result suggested was to insert a line declination 0 degree which zero's the declination correction. One can then add a line such as calibrate compass +11.5 in our circumstances, not needed in yours where the alignment with grid north has already been made. As far as UFS is concerned, it's also worth noting that Therion recognises the local grid so you can use cs: OSGB:ST Graham

CS and grid alignment
by Ben Cooper 16 Feb '11

16 Feb '11

Is there a way of turning off the grid alignment rotation for parts of a survey when using the CS setting? My survey is of a cave (Upper Flood) in the UK using cs OSGB (or EPSG:27700). Some sections have been copied in from a paper survey that is already aligned to Grid North, while other sections are new surveys where I have manually specified declination to Grid North. When turning on the cs setting, I've noticed that the cave is rotated, because Therion has assumed that my survey is aligned to magnetic North. I can see two solutions for the new survey section: 1) change all my declination settings to be True North rather than Grid North. In this case Therion will apply the final rotation to Grid North. 2) remove all my declination settings and allow Therion to determine these based on survey date. Howevver, I'd prefer not to have to edit all the source files and it still leaves the problem with the old paper survey that I traced. Is there something I can do within Therion to turn off the rotation to Grid North when using the cs setting? Regards, - Ben Cooper

missing point +s partly resolved
by Bruce 14 Feb '11

14 Feb '11

>Any guesses as to which symbol-show (or other statement) directly effects the + part of the point symbol, as I would like to show them in both cases? I have figured this one out. One might expect the two statements. symbol-show point surface-station symbol-show point cave-station to have an identical net effect the same as. symbol-show point station but they do not. It seems like 'point station' is the '+' part of the station symbol, and 'point surface-station' is the special flag dependant part of the station symbol (like the entrance or doline or sink or continuation or arch symbols) and the text label. Not quite sure what unique attribute the 'point cave-station' might add - maybe the short stubby legs that point in the direction of the survey leg(?) So to get more complete information about the points to output to pdf, you need to include all three statements (assuming there is a 'symbol-hide group all' somewhere in your layout). At least I think it is something like this. I still have not figured out if the text associated with a surface point can be output if the point has no flags set. Bruce
