5.3.11 kml list output ideas
by Bruce 12 Jan '13

12 Jan '13

My wish-list for kml list outputs for the next release. I have noticed that if certain text strings occur in any of the following dataset source files, then Google Earth will not load the file. In survey file. survey -title "survey title text" station 21 "comment text" In drawing file. point continuation -text "point continuation text" The problem sub-strings I have noticed so far are "&" and "
", and I suspect any of the <> strings will cause a problem. Perhaps in the next version Therion could filter out these problem strings in the kml parser. As I mentioned before, -filter off is required with the continuation list; export continuation-list -filter off -output ExportedFilename.kml If -filter is on, the character that gets inserted with points or stations with empty strings stops Google Earth from loading the file. Perhaps Therion could substitute this character with a single question mark "?" please. As Google Earth is a 'surface only' viewer (so far), it would be nice if we could hide or view surface and underground points (or filter them) much as we do with layout files. Or perhaps better, distinguish them with differing symbols/colours or layers so we can toggle them from within Google Earth? If it is possible to have the default 'pin' marker and label reduced in size as a part of the kml file produced, then it would make the resulting representation in Google Earth more legible. I am finding that usually the point density in the outputs is too high to be legible at useful scales. And finally, perhaps the kml file header could be made more useful and be changed from. <kml xmlns="http://earth.google.com/kml/2.0"> <Document>

Therion KML export.
to . <kml xmlns="http://earth.google.com/kml/2.0"> <Document>

Therion continuation-list kml export
or .
Therion cave-list kml export
or .
Therion model kml export
or .
Therion map kml export
as appropriate, where "ExportedFilename" is extracted from the export statement like this; export continuation-list "ExportedFilename.kml" This way, both the file name and export type will able to be readily identified when using in Google Earth. Cheers Bruce

this is just a minor nuisance, i noticed that when i want to open o file without extension with xtherion text editor, it tries to add the extension ".th" and says that it cannot find the file. marco

point:passage-height
by Dave Clucas 11 Jan '13

11 Jan '13

I'm using point passage-height to show the depth of some cobble banks. The map scale is 1:2000. The symbol almost fills the passage which is 9m wide and I can't find a way to scale it down. Using -scale xs makes no difference and I can't find any definition for the point or any metapost code to change it. I tried the layoutScales from Bruce but that made no difference. Does anybody know how I can modify it? Dave Clucas daveclucas.com mycaves.org.

Loop closure
by Torsten Schnitter 11 Jan '13

11 Jan '13

Hi all In the Therion book is written: "All data are relative to survey station positions. If the coordinates of survey stations are changed in the process of loop closure, then all relevant data is moved correspondingly, so the map is always up-to-date." I have a complete cave survey with a .th and .th2 file. First one contains all surveystations with LRUD messurements. After compiling I got a .xvi file to input into the mapeditor for drawing wall etc. The .th2 file contains all scraps with walls, stations, areas and so on. Now I added a sidetunnel. But due to deviation in the messurements the sidetunnel is not connected to the maintunnel at the startpoint AND endpoint. Of course the maintunnel would not be that accurate as well. I wanted to close the loop and get the 'average error' of both messurements. So I used 'equate' for the first and last point of the sidetunnel to connect it to the maintunnel. I got the loop closure with slightly different stations beyond the first connection as I expected. But only for the .xvi file. All walls, stations from the .th2 file are still in place as before the loop closure. For example the drwan stations from the .th2 file are no longer corresponding to the stations from the .xvi file. This is not as expected because as written in the Therion-book (see above) I expected the drawn stations, wall etc. to be corrected or let's say 'deferred' as well corresponding to the loop-closure-deviation. In the therion.ini file I alreadey changed to "loop-closure therion". But this didn't change anything. Hopefully it's clear what my problem is!? So what I'm doing wrong? Can anybody give me a hint how to do it the right way and get the drawings (stations, walls etc.) in the right position after a loop closure as well? I didn't find any hint to that in the wiki or mailarchive. If more information is needed please let me know. Cheers, Torsten

Tricks for drawing boulders on sand area without sand inside the boulders?
by Footleg 09 Jan '13

09 Jan '13

I am wondering if I am missing a trick here. I am trying to draw some boulders in specific positions in an area of sand. The boulders are drawn with rock-edge line type (is that correct?). But as you can see on the PDF, the sand area fill puts sand inside the boulders. Is there an easy way to avoid this? Or do I have to carefully define my fill area around the outsides of the boulders only? Footleg

Certainly when I have done that, or similarly drawn boulders within a sump, the only way to avoid the sand appearing where it shouldn't is to define the line around the boulder as part of the fill boundary. New release of Cave Converter
by Footleg 05 Jan '13

05 Jan '13

A New Year, and a new version of my Cave Converter tool. It converts between various cave survey file formats. Primarily to enable users of DistoX devices to get their existing data into PocketTopo, and their new survey data out of PocketTopo and into Survex format. Help and download link on the new home page. Source code now available too under GNU GPLv3 license. http://wscc.darkgem.com/caveconverter/ Some minor bug fixes in this release: - PocketTopo trip comments are now supported. - Survex files can now contain more than 26 splays per station without containing invalid characters. - When run on Windows, output files will now have Windows style line endings. Bug reports and requests to support other formats always welcomed. Enjoy!

inkscape to .th2 scale problem
by Erik VdBroeck 04 Jan '13

04 Jan '13

I've been exporting some surveys from Auriga in .svg format, and opened them in Inkscape, then saving small parts of these as .th2 files to use them as scraps in Therion. I can't manage to process them, as Therion always returns the same error: C:\Program Files\Therion\therion.exe: error -- scrap psVectorEntree@GAF defined at ingang.th2 [128] is too large to process in metapost in this scale -- maximal scale for this scrap is 1 : 847186 no matter what scale I set when saving the .svg-bits into .th2: it always returns the same error. My scraps are extremely small, for instance this file with just an entrance section of 10 stations with passage widths, total file size is only 2,45 kb ! Who can tell me what I'm doing wrong ? thanks, Erik.

background sketch inserted multiple times
by Bruce 03 Jan '13

03 Jan '13

Michael I think you just added a wiki item on Fuchslabyrinth caves where it says Therions bitmap morphing feature is being used. I am intrigued because in 2008 or 2009 we were starting to use this feature, then we were delayed, and by the time we got back to experimenting there was a bug in the next version of Therion whereby the sketches were inserted into the pdf outputs multiple times, taking inordinate time to compile and making the pdf files very large, 100's of megabytes in many cases. Stacho acknowledged the bug and I think some change was made in 5.3.9, but it did not fix the problem for us. Described here http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gis.therion/2680/match=sketches I have tried again with a couple of different files using 5.3.10, in one trivial case a 283kB sketch inserted in a small map produced an 11MB pdf file (the pdf without the sketch is 300kB). So I am wondering how you are making it workable? Either; - something in our custom metapost or layouts is causing the error for us and you are not experiencing this bug, or - you are using an old version of Therion in which this feature was bug free, or - you are putting up with very large output files, even for very small portions of your overall project I'm interested in your comments.
