background sketch inserted multiple times
Michael I think you just added a wiki item on Fuchslabyrinth caves where it says Therions bitmap morphing feature is being used. I am intrigued because in 2008 or 2009 we were starting to use this feature, then we were delayed, and by the time we got back to experimenting there was a bug in the next version of Therion whereby the sketches were inserted into the pdf outputs multiple times, taking inordinate time to compile and making the pdf files very large, 100's of megabytes in many cases. Stacho acknowledged the bug and I think some change was made in 5.3.9, but it did not fix the problem for us. Described here http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gis.therion/2680/match=sketches I have tried again with a couple of different files using 5.3.10, in one trivial case a 283kB sketch inserted in a small map produced an 11MB pdf file (the pdf without the sketch is 300kB). So I am wondering how you are making it workable? Either; - something in our custom metapost or layouts is causing the error for us and you are not experiencing this bug, or - you are using an old version of Therion in which this feature was bug free, or - you are putting up with very large output files, even for very small portions of your overall project I'm interested in your comments. Bruce
Hello Bruce, Thanks for your contribution.....I'll respond in 1-2 weeks, since I'm very busy. (We also have problems with multiple bitmaps, but of different nature). Cheers, Michael. ----- Original Message ----- From: Bruce To: 'List for Therion users' Sent: Tuesday, October 30, 2012 7:45 PM Subject: [Therion] background sketch inserted multiple times Michael I think you just added a wiki item on Fuchslabyrinth caves where it says Therions bitmap morphing feature is being used. Hello Bruce, I think we're suffering the same inflated PDFs. I attach a small project which uses 3 very tiny PNGs as input, resulting into a PDF which is at least 3x the size in MB. With large bitmaps, a PDF is produced which some computers cannot handle anymore because of size. We also use Therion version 5.3.10. For the "Fuchslabyrinth" Project, we have an additional issue which is at least as painful: Overlapping sketches (even if the inserted PNGs are transparent) lead to a PDF output, where passages in the overlapping area are concealed. Current workaround is to crop the PNGs razorsharp at the passage boundaries, but that is not always possible. See attached mini-project. If you or the Therion developers have a "fix" for either issue, we'd greatly appreciate receiving it! A Happy New Year to all Therion users ! Therion 5.3.11 claims to have solved the "sketch inserted multiple times" problem and I would be very thankful for that. However, when I process my data with the .11 version, I always get a "file not found" for the sketche's images. (The sketch editor works fine). Using exactly the same data with 5.3.10, it works well (with the disadvantage of the "multiple insertion"). I'm using Windows. Perhaps a "backward-slash" problem ? Just wanted to touch base if someone else encountered this behavior or who can recommend a quick fix. Cheers, Michael
Michael I have tested this issue with 5.3.10 and 5.3.11 and they both work as expected on my Windows XP machine. Hi folks, Sorry for bothering you with this - but the attached simple data (hope it comes through via the mailing list) works with Therion 5.3.10. and fails with 5.3.0.11. I verified again today. If someone could test the attached data on their (Windows-)machine...I'd appreciate. (I have replace the png file by a smaller one, but can provide original 7MB png if needed). On my Windows XP machine, your dataset works fine, even with 5.3.11. We have updated image magick executables in installation, so this may cause the problem. I may try on Windows 7 machine at home, whether this is not the problem. You may try one more thing, running therion in debug mode. Just add -d option to command line options text box in xtherion compiler, as shown on the attached image. This should help prevent path related problems. Or you may replace convert.exe and identify.exe at C:\Program Files\Therion\bin from version 5.3.10 into installed version 5.3.11. HTH, S.

Ok, I understood the issue, it seems there is a link to a dll, vcomp100.dll, it works if you have the dll on your path or if you build therion before I think. I don't have it on my win7 by default for sure. Workaround : put the vcomp100dll on attachment in your path or in your therion sources files. Thanks, Stacho ! It's the "identify.exe". Replacing it with the 5.3.10 version solves the problem. (Had to replace "convert.exe" as well to prevent program from crashing). Project works fine now, and the size of the generated PDF is approx. the sum of all included images, which makes sense. Kind Regards, Michael.
It looks there is a problem with missing plugin(s) to ImageMagick. It could be the same reason way with default system installation of ImageMagick it didn't work and after fresh brew installation which overwrites the old one it started work. Before brew: cmake freetype jpeg lcdf-typetools libpng pkg-config proj vtk wxmac after brew: $ brew list cmake freetype imagemagick jpeg lcdf-typetools libpng libtool pkg-config proj vtk wxmac m. I can have a look at it, but there were no changes in the code, that could cause this. Are you able to provide some small data sample, that generates this file not found error? Thanks, S.
infact i noticed that if there are N sketches inserted in the scraps, for each one of the sketches all the N sketched are included in the pdf. therefore the size of the pdf grows quadratically, ie, as N*N, with the number of inserted sketches. maybe martin may explain why it is so ... thanks. marco ________________________________ From: Michael Wasmund <knollesimage@t-online.de> To: List for Therion users <therion@speleo.sk> Cc: Christopher Ross <chrsross@t-online.de> Sent: Sunday, November 4, 2012 1:53 PM Subject: Re: [Therion] background sketch inserted multiple times Hello Bruce, I think we're suffering the same inflated PDFs.
