XTherion background image control and bitmap file size question
by Bruce Mutton 27 May '21

27 May '21

Mōrena I am wondering if XTherion can scale background images, or if anyone has hints on scanned image settings that generate a larger background image, that is economical on bytes? Back story: I created a multi-level survey (shaft system in cave) with PocketTopo, rather than creating many small survey files to keep each level separate. At home I printed the PocketTopo bitmap, then sketched over three of the four main levels that I now want to draw with Therion. Then I created an xvi with TopParser (I chose my usual export settings, and of course maybe I could have chosen better settings). You can see the xvi and some drawing directly on that xvi in the image below. You can also see the three 100 dpi png background images that I imported into XTherion. The three images are much smaller than the xvi and while it so happens the zoom range is such in XTherion that I could easily draw my scraps over them, I would like all four scrap background to be a similar size. It just makes life easier into the future that way. I am a novice when it comes to bitmap manipulation, but I managed to use GIMP to scale up one of the images about 3.5 times. You can also see that in the image below. It is about the same size as the xvi which is what I am after My frustration is that the original png images are all about 600 kB and the enlarged image is about 3000 kB. I am a miser and I would like to minimise bloat in my project repository. Can we scale the image in XTherion, using the original smaller file as the permanent source? Or are there tricks to enlarging the png image while maintaining a modest file size? I am aware that jpg will likely compress to fewer bytes, and will try that unless it becomes too blurry. It looks like XTherion th2 file header has some unused controls. I could not find any documentation on this, so I have deduced the format as follows… ##XTHERION## xth_me_image_insert {x coord visibility[0=off, 1=on] gamma} {y coord {<unknown empty variable>}} filename and path <unknown 0 variable> {< unknown empty variable >} Maybe there is scope for scaling and rotation of images by XTherion in here? !! Switch off measured cave passages
by thomasschilter＠bluewin.ch 26 May '21

26 May '21

Dear Therion Community Our caving club is working on processing our old survey data. We are trying to display our data with the help of Therion and the Loch programme. Among the caves, the Hölloch is represented with over 200 km of passages. The survey data has been added over 70 years. This results in a problem that already surveyed passages were re-surveyed years later. In addition, a surveying network was drawn through the entire cave and recorded with theodolites to increase accuracy. In order to represent all the passages, there are therefore overlaps; some passages are drawn twice in the Loch programme. However, all these surveys are needed to calculate the cave. My question is, is there a flag that makes it possible to switch off or hide measuring sections in the LRUD data without these being excluded in the calculation? Or what other solutions are there? Thank you for your answers. Kind regards Thomas

cave survey drawing up in VR
by Julian Todd 23 May '21

23 May '21

Hi folks, I've got a pretty neat system for drawing up cave surveys in Virtual Reality now. (I showed it to Wookey today, and he assures me it's not too off-topic for this list.) It's networked, so two or more people can be in the same drawing session and work with each other. There's a short video of me and Mike Futrell doing this on this page: https://sidequestvr.com/app/1630/tunnelvr You don't need a VR set to use it. There are downloads for PC versions here: https://github.com/goatchurchprime/tunnelvr/releases/tag/v0.5.9 If anyone gets it working and wants a tour, email me and we can set up a phone call and I'll join in and talk you through. I am pretty sure in the long run doing cave surveys in 3D like this is a lot easier than what we are doing in 2D at the moment, because it doesn't have all those problems with overlapping drawings, layout, keeping track of symbols and files that we now do. Julian.

Invisible walls and scrap boundaries show up as walls in plan kml
by Michael Ross 29 Apr '21

29 Apr '21

Hello, I'm currently fighting with some Therion behavior. I'm not sure whether that is intentional or a bug. Sometimes it is necessary to use walls flagged "invisible", for example to close off passages where the walls are very far apart, or at complicated multi-way junctions. When generating a plan in kml output format, Therion appears to treat the "invisible" walls in the same manner as "visible" walls. When using standard GoogleEarth display you may not notice, but it becomes obvious when telling GoogleEarth not to fill the passages with color (via the properties dialog). Can the "invisible" walls be suppressed when generating kml ? Same happens when two scraps are connected to each other: at the place where the two scraps connect, i.e., at the scrap boundary, in plan - kml a wall is drawn (perpendicular) across the passage even if those passages are connected via "join". Cheers, Michael.

pdftex error introduced after c43b32a (2021-03-08)
by Bruce Mutton 25 Apr '21

25 Apr '21

Hi Martin Not sure if this is a problem related to recent code changes, but if it is not, I am unsure what I did to create it, as I haven't changed anything at my end as far as I know. A subset of this project has been compiling fine, but when I try to compile a larger section I get the error below with f02bd7a, and all the versions I have saved, until c43b32a (2021-03-08) which is the last good one that will compile it. It reports itself in logs incorrectly as therion 5.5.7+67fffb0 (2021-02-22). I have not done any other investigation yet, but expect that you might be able to track something down based on the above and the snip from my f02bd7a log file as below. Bruce . XVI output misaligned (rotated) from original TopoDroid sketches
by Paul Rowe 24 Apr '21

24 Apr '21

Hi, I'm just trying out TopoDroid for the first time as the source for scraps in Therion. I can view the th2 scraps in Therion and can see the stations and splays. However, if I then output to XVI and add the XVI as a background image in Therion, the XVI is misaligned. The scale is correct and I just manually move the background XVI image to line up with one of the stations in the scrap. The XVI layer is rotated slightly (1 or 2 degrees) and then doesn't line up across the rest of the sketch imported from TopoDroid. Has anyone run into this? I thought it might be a difference between true north and grid north, but exporting to XVI with north set to true or grid doesn't fix the issue. The XVI layer isn't strictly necessary as the stations and splays are already visible in the TopoDroid sketch output. It does make me worry that there's some underlying problem though that I need to fix. Thanks, Paul Rowe

My map-connection symbol has broken recently
by Bruce Mutton 24 Apr '21

24 Apr '21

Somewhere between Therion 5.5.7+67fffb0 (2021-02-22) and Therion 5.5.7+c43b32a (2021-03-08) (hope those are the right versions - I might have got confused) the behaviour of my line arrows and map-connections has changed. I use some modified/customised code for these, which I last edited in 2018, so while this recent change in behaviour might be a consequence of my clumsy coding, the change is triggered somewhere between those two development releases. Therion calls the metapost definition l_arrow to draw both arrows and map connections, so to some extent the appearance of each is tied together. I'm just wondering if I should tidy up my symbol definition code (I know I should) or whether something has been broken slightly in the recent Therion versions? This is what I used to have, with Therion 5.5.7+67fffb0 (2021-02-22) and earlier. And for arrows, these small filled heads are what I used to get With Therion 5.5.7+c43b32a (2021-03-08) this is what I now get Same is happening with Therion 5.5.7+f94faef (2021-04-23) Looks like the arrow heads on a line arrow now are drawn wider, such that a gap appears inside of the arrow head, dependant on the arc of the line on which it is drawn. And somehow the arrow head on the map-connection line has become fat and blobby. The pen width appears to have grown very wide. As though my custom code is no longer being used for arrow heads? My custom code for map-connections, last edited in May 2018 as below. Aside from the problem I have described above, I would like the arrow lines to be narrower than the map connection lines, and the arrow heads for line arrows to be small and the arrow heads for map connections to be large. Three years ago when I tried I could not make it work, but maybe as a result of this someone can give some guidance. Having mapconnection call l_arrow brings about a nice degree of consistency, but can be frustrating where discrete differences are desired. If anyone knows how to morph the arrow heads to follow the curve of the line, that would be great as well. To avoid the disjointed examples on the left above. Bruce #ARROW and MAP-CONNECTION REDEFINITIONS #-------------------------- code metapost % Q = 0 -- no arrows % 1 -- end % 2 -- begin % 3 -- both def l_arrow (expr P, Q) = T:=identity; pickup PenB; thdraw P; p := (-.1u,-.5u)--(0,0)--(.1u,-.5u)--cycle; % 0.25 changed to .5 and close end to get nicer arrowhead if odd Q: thfilldraw p rotated (angle(thdir(P,0))+90) shifted (point 0 of P); fi; if Q>1: thfilldraw p rotated (angle(thdir(P,length P))-90) shifted (point infinity of P); fi; enddef; def l_mapconnection (expr P) = thdrawoptions(dashed dashpattern(on 1bp off 2bp on 1bp off 2bp) scaled (2 * optical_zoom) withpen PenB); %draw map-connection line with arrowhead at end l_arrow(P,1); %How to double or triple arrowhead size with this call? %draw dot at start of map-connection line thdraw point infinity of P withpen pencircle scaled 0.3u; %Why infinity and not 0 for dot at start of line?? %If point before arrow head, then point does not render in legend but does on map?? thdrawoptions(); enddef; endcode

therionsurfac2survex now also on mac!
by Benedikt Hallinger 21 Apr '21

21 Apr '21

Hi, just wanted to drop a note that I just managed to compile the therionsurfac2survex tool also for mac now. You can use it to generate a surface mesh (legs with -flag surface) out of GDAL or therion surface files. This is useful if you for example want to measure distances from cave to surface with the help of aven. I updated the latest release with the binary: https://github.com/hbeni/therionsurface2survex/releases/tag/1.1.0 Have fun, and let me know if it works, Beni

Need help producing scraps.kml without white blobs
by Michael Ross 21 Apr '21

21 Apr '21

Hello there, I "own" a fairly large dataset of a maze cave. Producing PDF output works well, but when producing kml using export map -projection plan -output Scraps.kml I get large white blobs where there should be transparency. See attachment. First assumption was that Therion needs some help by marking certain walls "outline in". But that didn't help. Then I tried redrawing the walls of the affected passages to get long lines of walls rather than concatenated short sections of walls, assuming that would help Therion to better understand. Didn't help. Anyone had this problem so far? If there is a way to post-process the kml file to remove the white areas, that would also help. Or any other hint to systematically track this down. Kind Regards, Michael

Two inner walls gives an error
by עמרי גסטר 17 Apr '21

17 Apr '21

Hi everyone, Therion gives me an error for a situation that seems to be ok, maybe I'm missing something or I may have found a bug. In the first image the inner wall is defined "out" and the yellow tick facing outward and this works fine. In the second image I added another inner wall which is also defined "out" and with the yellow tick facing outward and I get the error "multiple scrap outer outlines not supported yet". As far as I understand there shouldn't be an error because both inner walls are defined correctly. [image: image.png][image: image.png] -- Omri
