Metapost / Tex error when compiling my projects on a new machine
by Tom Foord 07 Apr '21

Hi everyone I'm hoping someone can shed some light on a weird error I'm getting when attempting to compile my projects on a new PC. All of my projects are stored on Dropbox and are compiling successfully on other machines. But on my new laptop (a Dell Inspiron running Windows 10 with a fresh install of Therion 5.5.7) I am getting the same error every time, across all projects. It appears to be some issue with Metapost and/or Tex (neither of which I really understand to be honest). Here's the relevant bit of the log: ####################### metapost log file ######################## This is MetaPost, version 2.00 (TeX Live 2020/W32TeX) (kpathsea version 6.3.2) 7 APR 2021 08:23 **data.mp (c:/Program Files (x86)/Therion/texmf/mpost/mpost.mp (c:/Program Files (x86)/Therion/texmf/mpost/plain.mp Preloading the plain mem file, version 1.005) ) (./data.mp {randomseed:=42} [4001] [4002] [4003] [4004] [4005] [4006] [4007] [4008] [4009] [4010] [4011] [ 4012] [4013] [4014] [4015] [4016] [4017] [4018] [4019] [1] [2] [3] >> data.mp >> data.mpx ! ! GIS model output - open multipatch shp
by עמרי גסטר 21 Mar '21

21 Mar '21

Hi, I use the GIS model output to calculate the volume of a cave. To do it the multipatch have to be closed. The multipatch shp that therion exports is never close, even when everything is ok. To fix it, I use a tool in arc scene to close the multipatch shp, but it always adds an extra volume to the cave, sometimes it's significant. So my question is why the multipatch isn't close? Can it be fixed? Omri

Strange Therion/survex disparity in altitudes
by A Gott 17 Mar '21

17 Mar '21

HI Therion friends, I'm working on a dataset with a friend, We have survex and Therion working independently, but putting the aven models [.3d] from the survex dataset and the therion dataset side-by-side we're coming out with differences. We nailed the x/y difference down somewhat with the magnetic corrections in the .th file due to dates. But we're now left with a difference in the height/altitude between the two models. The cave is a single entrance cave which is higher at the end (with a streamway 260-340m below), All of the differences are weird but the weirdest difference in altitude is in the middle, where there's a 60m difference in the survex/therion models, however further on at stream level, there is only a 20m difference [665 - 685] ##### The models are kept at: Survex: http://cave-registry.org.uk/svn/Andara/Tresviso/ Therion: http://cave-registry.org.uk/svn/Andara/Tresviso/Nacimiento/therion/Nacimien… run therion using Nacimiento2020_master.thconfig ##### I sent the following message to my friend to describe the issue: # "Hmm, I think the next thing to try and crack is the elevations. as I think there’s something going awry there, which might point us further towards the remaining 50m in n-s separation. On the .3d file generated from therion I get the following Entrance= 470m Dr2000stream_pina.23038= 665.30m Terror_firma.6= 933.34m On survex model I get: Entrance= 480m Dr2000_streamway2.23038= 685.26 Terror_firma2.6= 1025.53 I really can’t answer the 10m diff at entrance, the 20m difference at stream level or 92m difference at the top. Extrapolating down, Jurassic highway.0 is still 90m separation. However, satan_dr2000.1202 is 41m separation (higher in survex). Increases again to 66m sep at garden Eden.16 vs consort_climax.16E" If anyone can give me some help I would be thankful, as i'm confused! Regards, Alastair Gott.

"\legendbox" "\loadpicture" and absolute paths
by rowena 14 Mar '21

14 Mar '21

Hello, I am using the "\loadpicture" capability in "\legendbox" constructs to include map sections, elevations, etc. It all works nicely on my PC where I am using relative paths to the pdf files. My club has a desire to archive the map data for posterity - ie if my pc dies or I go walkabout, the map data should still be available so that others can add to the maps as they are extended. I would prefer to have the images included using relative pathnames, rather than absolute pathnames, so that future explorers can download the map data and extend it, without having to duplicate my file hierarchy. How can I include relative paths in the \loadpicture functionality? Thanks, Rowena

Symbol-hide and user defined symbols ?
by Xavier Robert 09 Mar '21

09 Mar '21

Hello, For my Therion’s projects, I wrote a global config file (Config.thc) where I defined all the user defined symbols. In my thconfigs, I call this config file at the beginning of the file with input config.thc. In the layouts, I call the layouts of the config.thc that I want to use with for instance copy drawingconfig. In one of my thconfig, I would like to hide some of these symbols that I have defined in the config file and drawn in a survey. For that, I used in a layout, for instance, symbol-hide point u:symbol_plan (in my config.thc in the layout drawingconfig, I defined the point p_u_symbol_plan as proposed by Juraj Halama). When I compile (with c43b32a), it crashes with this error : -- unknown symbol specification -- point u:symbol_plan Is it because symbol-hide cannot take in account user defined symbols ? Is it because I misunderstood the syntax of this command for user defined symbols ? Is-it a bug ? Cheers, Xavier

export model kml causes untrapped error
by Bruce Mutton 09 Mar '21

09 Mar '21

Good afternoon or morning I have a situation that I suspect might stem from user error, because it affects only one project, the data is a little messy, and there are 30 m miscloses involved, although Therion is good at dealing with such things, so maybe that is not significant. My other suspect is the kml model generation code, because that is apparently the only thing that falls over. This has been, for this project only, a problem for many years, and through many versions of Therion, although it is likely that there was an old version that compiled it OK. I have tried it on yesterday's version 3e14a09 and the behaviour is the same. It is a large project involving many caves, some groups of caves, and then a master cave at three different folder levels. I've tracked the issue down to one cave, and if it is removed (and the station equates joining the other centrelines are broken [of course]) the problem goes away. The export model kml at all folder levels involving this cave will cause an untrapped error if it is present with other caves. The problem cave will however produce a perfect kml model if it is compiled stand alone. It is notable that the problem only ever manifests with export model kml. I can produce lists, loch and 3d models. Every type of export map plan and elevation pdf and kml output is also fine. If loop-closure survex is set, I get a truncated XTherion transcript and a therion.log that truncates midstream. If loop-closure therion is set, I get no XTherion transcript, and a zero length therion.log file. Similar to the log files, the kml files appear to be truncated midstream, one or two hundred lines in. I have checked the coordinates at the point where the kml truncates, so that I could focus on that particular survey and leg. There is nothing untoward there, however I suspect that the cause of the crash is not necessarily right at the last station written. The log and kml truncations are fairly consistent however, but not always the same if I make adjustments to the input data. Any insights out there? Anyone else had similar behaviour? therionsurface2survex can flip grids now
by Benedikt Hallinger 01 Mar '21

01 Mar '21

Hello, as some of you already know, the therionsurface2survex tool can generate surface meshes for aven out of therion surface or gdal grids. This allows for example to display a 3d-grid in loch and aven, and to take measures between cave and surface in aven. Today i enhanced the tool so it can understand the grid-flip command: https://github.com/hbeni/therionsurface2survex/issues/2#issuecomment-787776… Also negative step size in gdal headers yield flipped grids. It would be cool if some people here could test it with real datasets :) The test case does what i would expect, but I’m not sure i fully understood the input data and its implications. Before i merge the feature, i would be much more confident by test results from more proficient people than me. Thanks and greetings! Beni

Two screen problem
by Andrew Atkinson 25 Feb '21

25 Feb '21

I've been ignoring this for many years, but now it is causing problems. If you have 2 monitors when xtherion is opened it takes a width of about the combined width but centres on one of the monitors. Some other programs, Firfox, seem to remember the last state they were in, lots do not, xtherion being one of them, it appears. There are some setting in XFCE for this, but playing with these has not had the desired results. If the monitors are the same size, which is mainly what I have had, I generally can make it full screen and it is fine to use, you can drag it across both screen and then change the size, but this is tedious. It is more of a pain when using a projector which I do when delivering training, but I tend to do that only a few times a year. However, with lockdown I have done some virtual training, and it appears that various VC and VR delivery method cannot cope well with a window bigger than a single screen, jitsi completely freezes the machine, zoom is not much better (on both Sound keeps working) I've solved this by not have the second monitor, however, it would be really good to use it, so prepared thing can be on it, also then I can have people on one and demo on the other, so if it is an easy fix I would be most grateful. Request for new flags in Therion, Loch and Aven: waterflow?
by Evaristo Quiroga Raimundez 24 Feb '21

24 Feb '21

Hello, I have a request to the Therion and Survex programmers. I need two news flags in the Therion and Survex language: "waterflow" and "intermittent waterflow". And the implementaion in Loch and Aven to can visualize the active galleries with a diferent color (for example blue) from the rest of the cave. Thanks, Evaristo Quiroga.
