Graphic tablet with XTherion
by Bruce Mutton 09 Aug '21

09 Aug '21

After many many years XTherioning with a mouse, I think I might try a graphic tablet for drawing with XTherion, and maybe soon, Inkscape. Do I need anything fancy, or will the simplest do? One of these? https://www.huion.com/pen_tablet/Inspiroy/H430P.html Bruce

Therion map colour specification hierarchy
by Bruce Mutton 05 Aug '21

05 Aug '21

Hi Maybe with this morning's message I was tackling the task of specifically colouring certain maps from the wrong perspective. >From Therion Book. colo[u]r <color> . set the map colour; this option overrides the automatic choice when the layout specifies colour map-fg [map]. So I expect colour map-fg to set the typical colour scheme for a map in a layout, and if I want exceptional override colours I specify these with selects in my thconfig. In thconfig select 97-HectorsWetPlan@MiddleEarth -colour [100 0 0] #red select 90-ToPoolPlan@MiddleEarth -colour [0 70 0] #green In layout colour map-fg [97 86 38] # yellow brown So for this 'fixed' map-fg the selects govern, as suggested by The Therion Book and as below, and I get exactly the effect I want. But with colour map-fg altitude, the selects are overridden. Although the selected coloured submaps appear on their own pdf layer, when the other layers are turned off, the submaps have the 'altitude' colours as seen below (and not the red or green colours that I might have hoped). Same thing happens with colour map-fg explo-date. So I think the behaviour suggested by the Therion Book is inconsistently implemented. I would prefer it if setting a colour for a particular map always overrode a general layout specification. Bruce

using revise to set a map colour, and
by Bruce Mutton 04 Aug '21

Hello I'm trying to force the colour of a particular submap, either from a thconfig or from within a layout. The thconfig route gives an error - unknown configuration command The layout route gives an error - unknown option Tried using these two syntax, and variously swapping '-colour' and 'colour' to no avail. revise 97-HectorsWetPlan@MiddleEarth colour [5] endrevise revise 97-HectorsWetPlan@MiddleEarth -colour [5] I see here <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/develop?s%5b%5d=revise> that a revise bug was fixed in 5.4.1 that prevented it working outside of a survey context, but maybe something has reverted? More likely I am missing something? I can do this. select 97-HectorsWetPlan@MiddleEarth -colour [100 0 0] #red .and it works in part - the map is exported, but it is not coloured red. Instead it is coloured according to a banded altitude lookup that I have activated. My understanding is that colouring a map explicitly should override 'colour map-fg' specifications, including lookups. I tried changing the order of selects to see if that would place one map over top of the other, but no change. I have previously coloured specific maps successfully (possibly without lookups), although I have not gone back to see exactly how I set those up. So is there a problem with some lookup colour palettes overriding explicit map colour specification? BTW, there is a diagram somewhere that shows the contexts/object model hierarchy of a therion dataset. Can someone point it out to me? (Perhaps it should be in the Therion Book). Bruce

Therion 6.0.0 altitude colour legend feedback
by Bruce Mutton 23 Jul '21

>Is it possible to scale the length of the bar based on the number of altitudes so that it fits the standard variable module length used for other colour legends? >>this has been implemented in 9a30b34 <https://github.com/therion/therion/commit/9a30b34a9c9ed54e8c651c2edbb8ef757…> . This is working I think – yet to test with all projects. > I tried using the ‘smooth-shading off’ option in the hope that the altitude legend format would revert to the old style, but there is no difference; it comes out the same as if ‘smooth-shading quick’ is set. >>This is intended, because even if you don't use smooth shading for scraps, most of the scraps colored by altitude get colors which are not found on the old-style discrete color legend. So a smooth color legend should be useful. Do you see a use case for having a discrete legend in this case? I’m not sure. I am undecided as to whether I would prefer independent control of the colour-legend style (user specifies smoothed if Therion can do it, or specifies discrete regardless of whether Therion can do smoothed or not). The current implementation seems to decide automatically, depending on the type of lookup (for example banded gives discrete, otherwise it is smoothed). Probably I would prefer independent control. Especially as the discrete style is used for all only most altitude map-fg / lookups and for all other map-fg / lookups. Here is a little game I set up in 2018, in order to work around the ‘colours not found’ issue you described above (ie I would artificially adjust the max and min altitude lookup altitudes to bias the colour a little bit). So I have re-run it with 5.5.7+5656503 and 6.0.0+9a30b34. I think it is useful for putting the altitude colourbar through it’s paces. Refer to the 10 images in the attached zip file. My tentative comments: 1. The new colourbar misses out the top colour (red), and generally biases the colours on the colourbar too far up relative to the labelled altitudes (a bug). 2. Non-linear colour specifications are represented much better by the colour bar than with the discrete colour legend, because labels are proportionate to the non-linearity. 3. The new colourbar chooses better (round number) altitude labels. 4. The old version (5.5.7) works better with banded colours as 6.0.0 did not shade it as I would like. It will probably be OK with smooth shading off – didn’t get around to checking that yet. Bruce

GitHub Windows installer
by Bruce Mutton 15 Jul '21

> You need to get the windows installer from GitHub now, as we no longer build windows binaries on our server. The new links are in the Downloads section of the therion web page. Umm… I’m logged in and on the installer page. Nothing on the help page jumps out at me about building or compiling the code. I’m going to need some pointers please. Bruce

Therion 6.0.0 altitude colour legend feedback
by Bruce Mutton 15 Jul '21

15 Jul '21

I have to say that I like the new look altitude shading in 6.0.0 One small request though. It seems that the length of the colour legend is fixed, regardless of the number of altitudes specified in a lookup. This can have a detrimental effect on layouts where the number of altitudes specified have been intentionally kept small. Is it possible to scale the length of the bar based on the number of altitudes so that it fits the standard variable module length used for other colour legends? The images below show what can happen otherwise. I tried using the 'smooth-shading off' option in the hope that the altitude legend format would revert to the old style, but there is no difference; it comes out the same as if 'smooth-shading quick' is set. I have included an output with 'colour map-fg explo-date' and 'smooth-shading quick' as a comparison, just to confirm that other colour layout options use the old style colour legend, and that 'smooth-shading quick' only applies to applies to altitudes.
