Therion/XTherion mailing list hijacking by Mapiah
by Rodrigo Severo 16 Nov '21

16 Nov '21

Dear list and specially Stacho and Martin, With this last messages I believe it's fair to say that I might be hijacking Therion/XTherion list to talk about Mapiah. If/when you believe this is a problem, please let me know and I will implement some alternative infrasctructure. I am not doing it already just because it might be beneficial to involved with Therion to follow Mapiah development but your take on this is authoritative. Please let me know if it's a problem. Best regards, Rodrigo

Rock border not creating boulders with smooth altitude shading
by Tarquin Wilton-Jones 14 Nov '21

14 Nov '21

Hi folks, I feel like I must have missed some email about this; surely someone will have noticed before... Boulders. They are made from line rock-border, which will create a shaded boulder when closed. Make an area of water. Create a line rock-border half-way into the water, and half out of the water, but still in the passage. The boulder is the same colour as the background. Translucent, sitting on top of the water. Set this: color map-fg scrap Still works the same. Now set this: color map-fg altitude The boulder loses its colour, and is nothing more than a thick line, so it stops looking like a boulder. Set this, and the boulder returns to being a boulder: smooth-shading off Is this an intentional change, a known limitation, or a bug? Cheers, Tarquin

Colour map-fg altitude quick shading breaks object colour fills
by Bruce Mutton 14 Nov '21

[Found this sitting in my drafts folder from early November] Interesting. All these years I’ve been thinking at cross-purposes, and assumed that the Foxit and Sumatra rendering (See Viewers for Therion Outputs <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/contrib:externalviewers#examples_of_renderin…> ) was closest to the intended rendering, and that Adobe Reader was doing it wrong. I had thought the poor implementation referred to was this: or this …whereby the water and underlying rocks show through the large rock, such as with Foxit. I had thought the more intense (or doubled?) colour within the likes of rocks and flowstone areas was the intended effect. For me the Adobe rendering appears flat and boring. Rereading the wiki and linked pages, I now see that I was wrong. Personally I much prefer the look of maps with the more intense colour within rocks etc as rendered by Foxit, the only downside being that underlying objects within the same passage/scrap are not completely hidden. For me, the Adobe rendering would be ideal if the colours were doubled up in the rocks, ie similar to the image on the left (from the wiki) but with ‘double-white’ rocks. In the case of colour-fg white the rocks would obscure the passage below slightly more than the surrounding open passage. What do other people prefer? Although some PDF viewers display rocks etc. in a colour slightly different from the scrap background, that's caused by their incomplete implementation of the transparency knockout groups. Try opening the second map in the Adobe Reader to check the colour of rocks, it should be similar to the first screenshot. Depth adds on surface if it is in a different sub-survey
by Tarquin Wilton-Jones 05 Nov '21

05 Nov '21

Hi folks, Ages ago, I filed https://github.com/therion/therion/issues/165 and Stacho fixed it (thanks!). We have just stumbled on another variant of it in a survey where both surface and the cave are rendered in a map (a few slopes on the surface), but the surface comes from a different sub-survey. This causes Therion to add on the depth of the surface legs too, so the cave gets far deeper than it should be. https://github.com/therion/therion/issues/392 I wonder how many cave surveys there are out there with the wrong depth because of this, since I would think that the vast majority of big surveys are done this way... o_O Tarquin

Re: [Therion] Fedora 35 vs. Survex package
by Bill Gee 04 Nov '21

Hi James - Thanks for the update. I do not have any active cave mapping projects right now, so for my test machine I am removing Survex and proceeding with Fedora 35. When a new Survex package is available, I will give it a try. There are other reasons for me to hold off Fedora 35 upgrades on my production systems for a week or two. ======== Bill Gee On Thursday, November 4, 2021 7:07:51 AM CDT James Begley wrote: > Hiya, > > This is a known issue that Olly is working on - see > https://trac.survex.com/ticket/102. > > Fedora 35 has moved to proj version 8.2.0, which no longer contains the > proj_api stuff that previous versiopns of survex relied on (deprecated > since version 5 or 6, actually removed from version 8.0.0). Minimum symbol scale
by Tarquin Wilton-Jones 28 Oct '21

28 Oct '21

Hi folks, There is a setting: min-symbol-scale M That allows you to hide all symbols of S or XS scale. That's useful when you want to show only the most important symbols in a low resolution survey. But is there a way to control this differently only for certain symbols? Eg. I want to be able to hide all "point label" symbols of scale M-XS but I don't want all my cave walls or breakdown choke symbols to disappear (which are at the default M scale). Essentially I want something like this: min-symbol-scale point label L min-symbol-scale point anchor:foo M Some of this I can of course do with MetaPost. But labels (the thing I care most about) don't allow you to easily redefine the MetaPost macro ... or at least the syntax is so weird that I don't understand it. Thanks for any advice. Tarquin

Import to Therion from Qave
by Graham Mullan 22 Oct '21

Hi All Someone I am working with is collecting his data using an application called Qave. He is having a problem exporting to Therion to do the final drawing. I have no experience of Qave (spoiler, I've never heard of it before) so can offer no advice as to how to do this. Can anyone on here assist? Just curious Is the Therion repository on Github <https://github.com/pricing> supported by a free or a pain plan? Bruce
