Like they > understand words like length, bearing, clino in survex. I understand what you are saying - I agree that anything in xtherion which is really referring to the element names in the therion input file should match up. On the other hand it is definately necessary to have proper local language translations for menus, error messages, help and documentation to allow software to be widely used by those who don't already speak good english. Eventually the xtherion interface should get to the point where many users will only use it via the graphical interface and won't be editing text files much at all. When that is true it is important that the meaning of symbols is easily understood, and the cross-reference to the code in the data files becomes less significant. So, I do think that translations are necessary in the user interface, but I agree that the need for the correspondence with the data-files to be clear, makes this problem harder than usual. Displaying both a translation and the string that will be netered in the data-file is probably best, but it might have to be switchable because they won't both fit on the screen. We probably have more important things to worry about at this stage, but I don't think it's right to say 'xtherion is only in english' as a policy. Survex's portuguese support, for example, has made it very popular in Brazil. This wouldn't have happened if it had been english-only. And survex has the same aspect as therion in that the data files are essentially in english. Translating the user-interface is definately a good thing and we should put the infrastructure in place, otherwise whilst the output can be read by anyone, only those who read good english can use the software. > 3. Hi I have been looking at the problem of the compilation on the PowerPC and started looking at some of the compilation errors too. 1. thpoint.cxx:446: warning: `.' not followed by `*' or digit in format thats because you have at this line the following... sprintf(buff,"%0.f",this->xsize); should that be instead the following? sprintf(buff,"%.0f",this->xsize); 2. The following is more serious. thpoint.cxx:731: warning: assignment of negative value `-1' to `char' void thpoint_parse_value(int & sv, double & dv, bool & qw, char & sign, char * str) and later on.... case '-': sign = -1; str++; break; OK my programming skills are rudimentary but if you assign a negative value to a character pointer then the variable will give a different value depending whether the operating system is 32 or 64 bit. My Alpha is 64 bit. The compiler warns about it and rightly so. 3. I have tracked down where the strange string comes from when I run ./therion -v therion$ ./therion -v therion gduxs:l:qLvhip: it's from thcmdline.cxx where it uses the getopt routines. oc = getopt_long (argc, argv, "gduxs:l:qLvhip:", thlong_options, &oindex); I read the man 3 page on getopt and so now I know what the gduxs:l:qLvhip: string is -- never used getopt myself. So somehow instead of the version string being returned its returning the argument to the getopt_long function ! eeeewwww :-) The version of getopt on my Ti PowerBook here running Debian 3.0 is therion$ getopt --version getopt (enhanced) 1.1.2 Mike -- Mike Lake Caver, Linux enthusiast and interested in anything technical.

[therion-users] therion does a seg fault when I try and run it
by Michael Lake 04 Sep '03

04 Sep '03

Hi all, I have just installed therion from source on a Debian Ti PowerBook and Im getting seg faults when I run it. The compiliation had a few warnings but nothing serious. I can post the output later if you want that. xtherion runs ok but fails with a compile warning. So I tried just therian as below. I am using your demo data. demo$ therion therion (null) reading initialization file ... done. reading configuration file ... done. reading source files ... done. processing survey data ... done. calculating basic statistics ... done. processing references ... done. selecting export objects ... done. scanning data tree ... done. processing projection (null) ... done. writing ... This is MetaPost, Version 0.641 (Web2C 7.3.7) (data.mp [4001] [4002] [4003] [4004] [1] [2] [3] [4] [6] [7] [8] [9] ) 12 output files written: data.1 .. data.4004 Transcript written on data.log. converting scraps... done. Segmentation fault I tried "therion -h" runs fine, demo$ therion -v therion gduxs:l:qLvhip: demo$ therion --print-encodings gduxs:l:qLvhip: Segmentation fault I removed the encoding lines from all the files that had utf-8 in them just in case that was the problem but no luck. Any suggestions on tests that I can do ? -- Mike Lake Caver, Linux enthusiast and interested in anything technical. [therion-users] cross-sections
by Martin Sluka 30 Jul '03

30 Jul '03

Stacho, we discussed the drawing of cross-sections with MartinB. It looks you should add to therion section-endsection command. Recent method to draw sections is a bit overcomplicated. There is not any relationship between section and section line for example. Sections are not usable for 3D now. section \ -bearing xx \ -slope yy \ -visibility on/off (manual or automatic) \ -anchor (inside passage - the point which belongs to real section) xy \ -reference_point (where to draw section) \ -standard_shape (for visibility off - not drawn on maps, but important for 3D) \ - [data] (in case of nonstandard shape - real section) endsection Therion should draw only "possible" sections - on 2D map only sections connected to subhorizontal not the vertical passages, ... There should be a validity check - if section corresponds to passage dimensions and height symbol for example, bearing too far from perpendicular orientation, ... The section line, orientation mark, connection line, etc. should be generated by therion itself. xtherion should have separate window for editation of real cross-sections and editable library of standard shapes. Any ideas from others? MartinS

[therion-users] New version of therion
by Stacho Mudrak 18 Jul '03

18 Jul '03

Hello everybody, this morning I've uploaded new version of therion to our web-site. Thanks to Wookey, we've also man pages for therion and xtherion (we've slightly modified them) and also documentation has been changed according to his proposals (and should be up to date now). I've studied also the makeconvert.pl script changes, that Wookey did in his Debian distribution, and it seems to me, that we've not understood correctly. The projection stays in export command, but is inserted via option. E.g. if you want to export map of extended profile, you enter into thconfig file: export map -proj extended (previosly it has been "export map extended"). The other thing for Debian distribution - at least at man pages is written, that therion tex and mpost macros are installed into /usr/share/texmf/... directory. But from version 0.2.13, therion don't need these macros! They're compiled in therion executable - so no additional tex or metapost configuration is needed! If you will remove them - nothing will happen and therion continue to work. I hope, you understood what I have written :) The last point, if somebody is interested about future therion developement, we would like to add to therion following features: 1. Automatically generated graphical scale, north arrow, title, authors and legend should be added to map and atlas by default. User will have possibility to modify them. 2. The modification of symbol set by user. It will be done via layout. 3. The therion tutorial - we're now working on some documents, that will make first steps in therion much more easy, like it is now. Because a lot of people are asking us for them - at least here in Czechoslovakia. 4. 3D passage wall modeling. Best regards, S.

[therion-users] Therion 0.2.13 Debian packages - testing needed
by Wookey 04 Jul '03

04 Jul '03

I've packaged therion 0.2.13 for debian and it's all very slick now as stacho has improved the source a lot. It should also fix the gcc 3.3 problem (old version doesn't compile). The only significant change I've made was to combine makeconvert1.pl and makeconvert2.pl into one command 'thconvert' which makes both the 0.2.6 and 0.2.10 data changes. It'd be good for a perl expert to check that over and make sure I didn't accidentally change any of the logic - It seems to work OK on test cases here. There's only one catch - the new version of therion refuses to output any maps. Given a thconfig file like this: encoding utf-8 source dxd.th source test.th2 export model -fmt survex export map extended -o dxd_extelv.pdf #export map plan -o dxd_plan.pdf #export atlas plan -o dxd_atlas.pdf I get an error "thconfig -- unknown option -- "extended" (or "plan" or "none" - whichever I use). The thconfig file format shouldn't have changed - so is there something something wrong with my compilation or is this version of therion broken? Is it just me? You can get the i386 packages and source at http://www.chaos.org.uk/~wookey/software/therion/ As soon as we get to the bottom of this I can upload 0.2.13 (and therion can stop being one of the 900-odd releas-critical bugs in Debian :-) -- Wookey -- Aleph One Ltd, Bottisham, CAMBRIDGE, CB5 9BA, UK Tel +44 (0) 1223 811679 work: http://www.aleph1.co.uk/ play: http://www.chaos.org.uk/~wookey/

Hello everybody, yesterday I've changed the Win32 installation again, now it seems to work really without any additional user setup (it reads all necessary configuration info from Windows registry - including path to cavern). The developement 0.2.14 version is on the WEB. S.
