[therion-users] therion does a seg fault when I try and run it
Hi all, I have just installed therion from source on a Debian Ti PowerBook and Im getting seg faults when I run it. The compiliation had a few warnings but nothing serious. I can post the output later if you want that. xtherion runs ok but fails with a compile warning. So I tried just therian as below. I am using your demo data. demo$ therion therion (null) reading initialization file ... done. reading configuration file ... done. reading source files ... done. processing survey data ... done. calculating basic statistics ... done. processing references ... done. selecting export objects ... done. scanning data tree ... done. processing projection (null) ... done. writing ... This is MetaPost, Version 0.641 (Web2C 7.3.7) (data.mp [4001] [4002] [4003] [4004] [1] [2] [3] [4] [6] [7] [8] [9] ) 12 output files written: data.1 .. data.4004 Transcript written on data.log. converting scraps... done. Segmentation fault I tried "therion -h" runs fine, demo$ therion -v therion gduxs:l:qLvhip: demo$ therion --print-encodings gduxs:l:qLvhip: Segmentation fault I removed the encoding lines from all the files that had utf-8 in them just in case that was the problem but no luck. Any suggestions on tests that I can do ? -- Mike Lake Caver, Linux enthusiast and interested in anything technical. Uff - this is the first time therion does not work on linux! It seems to me, that this is some global problem with pointers on your machine. Following lines indicate this:
therion (null)
(null) should be a version number
processing projection (null) ... done.
(null) should be "plan". Both strings are given in C code as constants, so some part of therion is writing to the memory, it should not touch.
therion gduxs:l:qLvhip:
This can be an indication - this is a string, that is passed to getopt library, so may be there are some conflicts of versions or something like that... Could you please try the following make process: make clean make config-macosx than you have probably to change the line 42 in the Makefile (CC = cc) after that step to CC = gcc, and than make It should use the included getopt code, may be it will help you... If not, than probably only low-level debugging will help :( Regards, S.

Mike is almost certainly the first person even to try a non-x86 version (I haven't actually tried it on arm yet - I really must do and see if similar problems arise). Is powerpc big or little-endian Mike
It seems to me, that this is some global problem with pointers on your machine. Following lines indicate this:
Indeed - looks like a serious miscompilation. Stacho - worth taking a look at the build log for powerpc to see if there are any clues: <url:http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.php?&pkg=therion&ver=0.2.14-1&arch=powerpc&stamp=1058554482&file=log&as=raw> Looks like there are some issues in thpoint- warnings about assigning -1 to char. (Which probably means that the default char is unsigned on powerpc, like it is on arm - people used to x86 tend to assume that 'char' means 'signed char' so don't explicitly specify it. This leads to failures like EOF tests going wrong amongst other things. g++ -c -g -Wall -D_GNU_SOURCE -DTHLINUX -O2 -o thpoint.o thpoint.cxx thpoint.cxx: In function void thpoint_parse_value(int&, double&, bool&, char&, char*)': thpoint.cxx:731: warning: assignment of negative value -1' to char' thpoint.cxx:731: warning: argument of negative value -1' to char' thpoint.cxx: In member function void thpoint::parse_value(char*)': thpoint.cxx:814: warning: comparison is always false due to limited range of data type thpoint.cxx:874: warning: comparison is always false due to limited range of data type thpoint.cxx:893: warning: comparison is always false due to limited range of data type That seems to be the only big thing the compiler spotted although there is also a load of stuff about missing fonts which may well not be important.

Does therion need a particular version of getopt? At the moment it's compilaing against whatever is current in the distribution. Wookey -- Aleph One Ltd, Bottisham, CAMBRIDGE, CB5 9BA, UK Tel +44 (0) 1223 811679 work: http://www.aleph1.co.uk/ play: http://www.chaos.org.uk/~wookey/

Hehe at me using a non-intel architecture. And I have some results for you on Alpha LX164 architecture too :-) I'll comment on that at the end of this email. Looking on google it seems PPC is big endian and Alpha is LE.(but i have seem some comments that Alpha can emulate any endianness)

That url above shows many of the warnings that I get in my build on PPC.

I did that and I get exactly the same error. The programs compile but I still get the seg fault and the funny verion number when doing a therion -v What suggestions now to debug this? I am keen to get this working on both PPC and Alpha. I am installing a new Debian on Jills Athlon at home and this weekend I will compile it on the Athlon - that should work. Results for Alpha Architecture ------------------------------ Machine: Alpha LX164 Running Debian, stable Compiled fine, some warnings but it did compile. I can post the compilation results later if needed. Xtherion works OK If i run therion in the demo directory as just 'therion' in that directory it fails with a metapost error. I have attached the logfile that it created , it was called therion.log and I have renamed it to therian_alpha.log I checked my metapost and it does work for small pictures. I saw that on the PPC there were the mp files in /tmp. They arent there for the alpha as I presume that they are deleted as therion runs. Mike is almost certainly the first person even to try a non-x86 version (I haven't actually tried it on arm yet - I really must do and see if similar problems arise). Is powerpc big or little-endian Mike
Hehe at me using a non-intel architecture. And I have some results for you on Alpha LX164 architecture too :-) I'll comment on that at the end of this email. Looking on google it seems PPC is big endian and Alpha is LE.(but i have seem some comments that Alpha can emulate any endianness)
yes - Arm can do either endianness as well (and so can SH4) but the Debian version picks a 'standard' endianness for the architecture. I'm not sure which it is for Alpha. ARM is LE in Debian.
What suggestions now to debug this? I am keen to get this working on both PPC and Alpha.
Run it under strace to see where it actually dies. Look at the code giving the char/unsigned char warnings - that's very likely to break something and is suggestive of 'x86isms' in the code. Structure packing is different on ARM from x86 and that can catch people out too, although I'd expect it to be less of a problem with C++ than C. Maybe this is true on powerpc too? It's also possible that the C++ compiler for powerpc has gremlins at the moment - there has been a lot of transition recently from G++ 2.95 to 3, 3.1 3.2 and 3.3. Testing and unstable are now on g++3.3 but stable is still 2.95. Certainly C++ compiling on ARM prior to about 3.2 was 'mostly broken' - I'd expect powerpc to be better than that but compiler problems could easily exist there too. I have one strace output as its small (trace1.txt, 3.5k) for 'therion -v'. The other strace (trace2.txt , 100k) is up on my website and its from 'therion' running in the therion supplied demo directory. http://www.speleonics.com.au/mikes/trace2.txt I havent used strace before but I see these errors: open("/etc/ld.so.preload", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) I have /etc/ld.so.cache but no ld.so.preload I see that here its writing the wrong string to output (stdout) 1 but the correct version number to output 3 (therion.log) write(1, "therion gduxs:l:qLvhip:", 23) = 23 write(1, "\n", 1) = 1 write(3, "therion 0.2.15\n", 15) = 15 and indeed therion.log does say "therion 0.2.15" I presume its best to debug first the simple :therion -v" rather than the therion running the data set in demo. Okies, I will be very patient :-)
Only small note from my experience - I use PPC with BSD and Darwin (G4 with MacOSX 10.2.6) and Therion compiles without any problem. May you compare somewhere compilation under MacOSX?
It compiles ok on the same machine running OSX 10.2.6 and runs fine. Regards, Mike -- You never know how many friends you have until you rent a house on the beach. Mike Lake Caver, Linux enthusiast and interested in anything technical.
There was general failure of internet services at Slovakia yesterday. Stacho's mail is in archive of konference, but not sent to members of list. He resent it but I haven't receive it till now. We are sorry, probably best solution could be to move konference to another server - speleo.sk? Martin At 22:29 +1000 2.9.2003, Mike Lake wrote: *******************************************

Hello everybody, I'm already back, but it will take me one or two days to get to the state, when I can start searching for an error in therion (or C/C++ compilers :). Regards, S.

Ah no problems. I am amazed at how far Therion has progressed in the last year. You have a fine program. I have a friend you uses LaTeX (so he is not afraid of scraps of TeX) and he was considering spending AU$700 on Canvas for doing cave maps. I showed him how far Therion has progressed and he will be starting to use it too. Which means he can now spend that $700 on caving gear instead :-) Best wishes Michael -- Mike Lake Caver, Linux enthusiast and interested in anything technical. Another TCL/TK program I use - AutoPrint from ImagePrint made by ColorByte Software shows that there is Big Endian in log (PPC+BSD+Darwin). Maybe this help a bit. Martin --
