Splays in pdf plans
by Andrew Atkinson 20 Sep '12

Hope this does not break the tread, but as I am not receiving the mails I cannot do a reply, just have to read the archives > And this next snapshot from the same pdf file shows passages in various > stages of drawing completion. Thanks Bruce, this gave me the hints I needed to do it. So I was including the survey file in the map, but that did not work. Still only got the centreline but no splays. I am also using pockettopo data with - as the to station. What I was doing wrong. I only had one map in the file so was allowing therion to do its stuff with no select option in the config file, also as the map has map information you do not need to use -proj plan, it just works. So to get splays displayed as the 'default' you need to select the map it is in (possible a high level one would work but I have tried enough for now) and explicitly have -proj plan on the map group, otherwise you only get the centreline. thanks Andrew

Therion wiki
by Ladislav Blažek 19 Sep '12

Hi all, when I was creating new wiki page yesterday I realized that we are completely missing some conception/structure in our wiki. A lot of tutorials mixed with various tips and tricks, examples, FAQ... I spent several minutes on wiki and I found a lot of really good stuff... A lot of good tips pretty hidden (not only) for newcomers. So maybe it is good time for some clean up and consolidation. My proposal is to divide documentation to few sections: - Guides and tutorials - Tips and Ticks - short tips like Checking of Therion "environment" - Code snippets (TeX, MetaPost) - Operating system (OS) related tips - installation, configuration etc. - Related stuff - tools, svg to th2 etc. and consolidate the rest = move pages into sections, split or merge some pages etc. Is there anybody willing to help with wiki maintenance? Another question is about bug tracker and IRC channel. I don't think it is used so is there any reason to keep links on main wiki page? As I am hosting whole project on my VPS we can have whatever we need - maybe some really simple bug tracker, VCS etc. hosted on speleo.skdomain. Any comments and suggestions are more than welcome. L.

New file error
by Andrew Atkinson 19 Sep '12

19 Sep '12

I have just discovered a frightening bug If you hit the new file icon (as I did accidental because my menus had disappeared. as I tried to open the file menu) the object window on the right is cleared, but not the picture. (So when I first did this I did not notice, and carried on, only noticing when I tried to compile it and it failed but I had over written my file by then, thank you version control, only lost half an hours work.) Anyway, recreating this, it appears that after you have hit new file (the icon) the Object window is cleared, and if you then click on a line or point in the drawing window, it adds an end of file and then the object appears after the end of file, item number -1. anything else click continues to be added as -1. trying to click on these objects in the object window, gives an error (I was hoping to move them to the right side of the end of file). Adding new items go in the right place and then anything clicked on is put in the right place but still with a -1 number, selecting this in the object window puts in a new end of file line, directly after it, therefore loosing everything else. I have attached a screen shot that hopefully show a bit of what I mean. Therion 5.2.9 on Debian whizzy Andrew

Sample dataset demonstrating all area symbols
by Bruce 18 Sep '12

18 Sep '12

This was supposed to take me a few weeks to get around to. but a miss-spent afternoon at work. I have added a dataset to the wiki that produces a map demonstrating all of the area symbols and their interactions with each other and other entities. It produces an A3 approx map at 1:1000. It is set up to allow users to add their own symbol customisations without too much effort, and to easily allow switching from the default or various preset symbol sets. I see I forgot to add a 10m grid to the map to give a sense of scale. Perhaps I'll add that in due course. http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php?id=examples#all_areas_all_symbol_sets Some things I learned during the process. The transparency of areas with filled backgrounds in pdfs is quite different when viewed with Adobe and Foxit Readers. Adobe renders them opaque, and Foxit renders them translucent (except for area u:) and except for objects that explicitly have -place bottom set and except for my custom area water and area sump. This difference in behaviour persists through to the printed documents as well. At least that's how it behaves on two computers I use. Objects with -place bottom are always completely obscured by areas with default placement regardless of the viewer. Objects with -place top render the same as objects with default placement over areas with default placement in both viewers. The Foxit behaviour is preferable I think, although you can never get a rock that looks like it is definitively 'high and dry above the water', unless you say, draw two rocks, one directly above the other. Therions sketch-warp algorithms perform very badly where the transformation applies a 'squash' in the y-axis and a stretch in the x-axis. The lower and upper thirds are transformed nicely and the middle third is scrunched beyond recognition. Adding extra survey stations to try to distribute the distortion is not particularly effective. I have samples if anyone is interested, but perhaps too large to distribute on the forum. A behaviour of map-comment (concatenation vs replacement) that was partially implemented on my behalf some time ago remains partially implemented. http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gis.therion/1424/match=map+comment Would it be possible to make it so that repeated map-comments in the same layout concatenate rather than replace previous instances as described in that post? Therion on OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion
by Ladislav Blažek 18 Sep '12

18 Sep '12

Hi all, as a fresh owner of MacBook I made raw guide how to build and install therion on Mountain Lion - http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php?id=install:osx10.8 Together with Stacho (big thanks) we made compilation/installation possible but currently there is problem with Loch. Loch is running but I am not able to open any file. After a lot of searching it seems that problem is related to combination of 64 bit OS X 10.8 + wxWindows 2.9 I am not able to build wxWindows 2.8 64bit as wxOSX/Carbon does not support 64bit. L.

Sample map of all symbols
by Bruce 17 Sep '12

17 Sep '12

Has anyone put together a sample therion dataset with each type of point, line and area? Perhaps even with various areas over/underlying other symbols? 'would be a useful resource to put on the wiki for people wanting to try out or test various symbol sets and customisations. Bruce

multilingual strings in code metapost?
by Bruce 16 Sep '12

16 Sep '12

Just wondering, is it possible to have Therion interpret multi-lingual strings in 'code metapost' in much the same way as it does in layouts and scraps? Eg label.bot(thTEX( "<lang:en>Original Scale 1 : <lang:de>Originalmassstab = 1 : " & decimal (Scale*100)),(0,-tmph)); The above, as I expected, it evaluates to the entire long string, but it would be nice to have it evaluate just to the language that the user selects.
