It looks that last version I have is able to use meters too. It'll take input in metres, but I think you'll find the output is still in feet. I'm pretty sure that he has no intention of rewriting Compass to that extent. Graham

Map to Data

It is perfectly safe to use. The one thing to remember is that its output is a Compass data file which means that whatever you think you did when using it, it will automatically convert all lengths to decimal feet. This is not an issue just as long as you remember it. I've used it a number of times, but only on small caves or mines, so I've had little problem editing the output into a therion or survex file by hand - and remembering to add the line "tape units feet" to it. Adjust opacity value in transparent color
by Robert Staven 20 Jul '16

20 Jul '16

Hi, I'm using Therion to map waterfilled caves, and some systems have 'air-locks' (air chambers), so it's necessary to distinguish between air filled cave, waterfilled cave and water surfaces. But the waterfilled area should show details (be transparent) in same way as dry cave. Is there any way to adjust the opacity value (in meta code?) when setting a transparent color? I have made a test to show my issues: The files can be found on http://www.staven.no/cavetest/ The cave (ca 100m long) plan: -> http://www.staven.no/cavetest/testcave_plan.pdf elevation: -> http://www.staven.no/cavetest/testcave_elevation.pdf This doesn't work to well draw underwater maps. *** Changing the water color: layout test code metapost def a_water (expr p) = T:=identity; thfill p withcolor (0.8, 0.8, 1.0); enddef; endcode endlayout -> http://www.staven.no/cavetest/testcave_elevation_2.pdf Looks better but the cave and line 'behind' doesn't show thru the water. *** Try with transparent water color: def_transparent_rgb(tr_lblue, 0.80, 0.80, 1.00); def a_water (expr p) = T:=identity; thfill p withtransparentcolor tr_lblue; enddef; -> http://www.staven.no/cavetest/testcave_elevation_3.pdf *** Almost perfect, but I like to adjust the opacity value so it looks like this: def a_water (expr p) = T:=identity; enddef; # no drawing of water color map-fg [80 80 100] -> http://www.staven.no/cavetest/testcave_elevation_4.pdf (NB You won't see the difference in Adobe Reader, but it shows up in SumatraPDF) Is there any way to adjust the opacity value when setting a transparent color? Or should I do this another way?

New Therion tips on wiki
by Bruce 18 Jul '16

18 Jul '16

Martin S I like your tip on straightening out zig-zig survey legs in passages in order to make extended elevations more realistic. https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php/tips?s[]=zig <https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php/tips?s%5b%5d=zig&s%5b%5d=zag> &s[]=zag I am sure I will use that. Also notice you have added a link to an executable for converting maps to data. Is there a page or some information about what it is and how it works? Some might be nervous about downloading an executable directly without any explanation about what it is and how it works (in case it is malware) Bruce PS New look wiki looks good.

Hi all, we have finished migration of web pages and mailing lists to a new server. We have also merged mailing list archives from various sources. Please let us know, if there is something broken. Big thanks to Marty and Ladislav for hosting therion website and mailing lists for more than 10 years! Martin

Cavedepth
by Torsten Schnitter 08 Jul '16

08 Jul '16

Hi I have a question about "cavedepth" and propbably need some help as I can't figure out the problem. My complete survey is about underwater cave passages. Therfore I have an option inside every survey and centerline which is "calibrate depth 0 -1". All survey are with "data diving station depth left right up down newline tape compass". And every depth is with positive numbers like 5.3 then which means -5.3m of waterdepth. Lowest number all over all surveys is 0.0. Biggest number is 24.1. Every scrap contains all the survey stations within this part of the cave as a "point station". So in the end I have every surveyed station inside the scraps. When I print the map as a pdf file (with all the scraps) I don't get the right number for Depth. With numbers as above I would expect a cave depth of 24m but I get 22m. Of course I can do an override with "\cavedepth{24\thinspace{}m}". But this is not what I want to. So can anyone explain please why I don't get the correct number for cavedepth in the map header? Thanks! cheers, Torsten

North Grid and Mag

Dirk I have posted this on the wiki, but not tested. http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php/metapost#special_symbol_examples Bruce _____ From: Dirk Peinelt [mailto:dirk.peinelt@t-online.de] Sent: Thursday, 9 June 2016 7:35 a.m. To: 'Martin Sluka'; Bruce Mutton Subject: AW: [Therion] Therion Digest, Vol 126, Issue 7 Hi Martin, Bruce, the definition may be published to the wiki. I'dont know if the code is effective. (I've not used the A-D Pens.) I combine this compass rose with a creation date in the map-header (/currentdate). A date variable is not present in metapost. If the CS is not set, the declination is Zero. Also if the declination is Zero, the northarrow is a Nmag arrow: North grid/true rotate the whole plan with the north arrow. (merid. Conv.?) Yellow symbol in debug
by Marco Menchise 03 Jul '16

03 Jul '16

Hello, here's a picture I got by cropping a plan map made by Therion with the option "debug all" in the layout. I noticed a strange yellow symbol and also Therion "distorted" my drawings. I can't figure out why. Could someone please clarify me? The station order is 4-7-8-9-10 and 4-5-6 (station 4 is a common point between two paths). My original drawings are in red, the final results are in blue. I wouldn't expect any distortion because I drew directly on real survey data (I used DistoX and Topodroid). Also, I can't figure out what the two small red lines connected by the yellow one are. I didn't draw them.. Any hint? Thanks, Marco [image: Inline image 1]

Re: [Therion] Really bad idea?
by Bruce Mutton 03 Jul '16

I also am mildly frustrated that colours in plan do not match elevation. Your solution sounds like night mare to edit subsequently however. Maybe better approach would be to work on a graded map-fg colour that changes appropriately based on altitude of nearby stations and maybe point altitude or dimensions for plan. And a simple gradation for elevations. To date i have been using similar approach to Footleg. Bruce Sent from my Samsung device, hence the typo's

New complimentary software: PEAR PHP Class library File_Therion
by Benedikt Hallinger 02 Jul '16

02 Jul '16

Hi there, i just wanted to inform you that since some time i am working on a PHP class framework to parse/generate therion files with PHP. I initially need this to export data in therion format from the austrian SPELIX system, where austrian cave data is centrally collected. Since i thought that a PHP class framework for therion file structures would probably be of broader use, i made it public as a PEAR project. Some days ago i released the second public release (0.2.0) with basic centreline and survey support and (i think) all important structures present (however not all of them do something right now, thus the alpha state). The rabbit example is parsable and writable again with core features (like centreline). I think it would be useful to list the packages home at the therion wiki page: http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php/contrib:complimentarycaveapps File_Therion package home: http://pear.php.net/package/File_Therion/ (contains link to sources and in the future documentation; APIdoc there is currently broken but will be fixed soon) With best regards, Beni Hallinger Höhlenverein Hallstatt-Obertraun / Austria
