Hi all, our mailing list is up and running again after previous server problems. I think everything (web, wiki, list) is OK now. L.

I know that, at Andrew's request, you enabled OSGB to be recognised for the ST area. Is there any possibility of OSGB:SN being enabled as well, as I am about to start building a model of a cave in that part of South Wales. map-bg transparent
by Bruce 23 Sep '10

23 Sep '10

On the topic of maps within maps. Therion inserts images with transparent backgrounds into maps correctly - at least it has worked for me. Is it possible to get therion to create a map with a transparent background? Something like 'map-bg off' perhaps? This would be useful sometimes when inserting map enlargements within a main map output. Bruce

Cross Sections - Scale?
by Andrew Atkinson 23 Sep '10

23 Sep '10

At last a final survey to be printed, well not quite. On closer examination, there seems to be a scale problem with the cross section. Either that or my drawing is really bad. Some of them seem to be twice the scale of the main survey, others seem to be the same. Is there a way to control this and what is the default? I have a horrible feeling that when I have imported from pocket topo, it asks which scale, some I have done at 1:200 but in the end I switched to 1:100, I hope this has not made a difference. You should be able to see what I mean on http://www.ubss.org.uk/__transfer/Charterhouse_basic_survey_small_file.pdf The ones on Route 66 (upper label) Onion Passage, look fine, but the ones on Route 66 (lower label) seem far too large, I have assumed twice scale. Practically out of time this has to go to printing, tomorrow Can I also thank all those on the list that have helped me to get this into production, and especially to those of you doing the coding Andrew

Re: [Therion] example data-georeferencing

Dan Similarly to Martin I do all my image overlays (topo image, aerial photo, geology, contours, property boundaries, map gridlines etc) in a standalone GIS package, then use the result as jpg surface overlay in Therion. Therion can then regurgitate it all with the cave included as a stand alone image, or you can produce geo-referenced cave shapefiles from Therion that will snap straight into your GIS project without ever having to load the image into Therion in the first place. Which is the best way depends on what you want to do ultimately, and which application you feel most comfortable using. If you need a more detailed example than Martin has provided I can pull together a cut down example in due course. I appreciate that the hardest bit is knowing how to organise the Therion data. After 3 years I am still having new insights and have no idea if I am doing it well. Bruce

FW: Under and over (maps)
by Bruce 17 Sep '10

>(I did not think we could colour by user specific maps, yet, or maybe I missed a change) Looking back I see we were pining for such a feature in May last year. You're right, nothing in the Therion Book, and a few experiments suggests it is still a dream. Bruce

FW: Under and over (maps)

> Martins example: > > map CJ_layers.map > CJ_1layer.map > break > CJ_2layer.map > break > CJ_3layer.map > endmap > >etc I like that general concept Martin, pretty much what I was hoping to end up with, including the likes of the preview statements in the detail maps. Nice & clean. So far it will play nicely with Maps and with Atlas outputs which is the first requirement. The next challenge is to allow for the optional offsetting of parts of the map by just commenting or uncommenting a line or two. (Depending on the particular output requirement maps need to be both 'with-offsets' and 'without-offsets', but atlas are almost always better without offsets, because by default each map, by the magic of therion, gets it's own chapter and these are linked 'up & down levels' with hyperlinks). And a further challenge is how best to incorporate sections. Are they best in a separate standalone map, or are they best sprinkled over the various plan maps, and simply turned on or off in bulk with symbol-hide, dependant on scale, or individually with -visibility off? Currently my datasets are a bit chaotic in this respect. Sorry Andrew, I don't have any better ideas for intertwined caves. With a good 'map system' like what I'm looking for it should be quite easy to rearrange the details of each map as the cave discoveries progress. I'm finding the concept of where one cave starts and another stops to be quite academic and changeable. Prejudices based on which passage was discovered from which known 'cave' are often blown apart by the speleo-morphology that becomes apparent once 'most of the discoveries' are made. I do agree though, it would be nice if Therion automatically knew which part of each map to draw 'over' or 'under' based on the survey station elevations! Bruce
