new snapshot
by Martin Budaj 23 Jul '10

23 Jul '10

Hi all, new snapshot is available. Changes include: * Austrian symbol set is implemented (just use "copy AUT" in your layout to activate it). * New coordinate system OSGB:ST is added (Andrew, please test it -- if it works fine, we will include other squares as well) Other news is that after a spam attack we decided to change editing policy for wiki pages. Editing is now allowed only for registered users (some of the users are already registered; for those who are not we will publish registration instructions soon). Martin

Coloured symbols - centrelines and gridlines
by Bruce 23 Jul '10

23 Jul '10

Hi Just been trying to add a bit of colour and have a few comments, questions. symbol-colour group cave-centreline [0 100 0] # only affects the centrelines. It does not affect the colour of survey stations or survey station labels. It seems to me that stations are part of the centreline (otherwise why make it 'group centreline' when 'line centreline' would suffice?) and so the group setting should affect all items associated with the survey stations and centreline. It should behave similarly for surface surveys. Adding. symbol-colour point cave-station [0 100 0] # does not affect the colour of survey station points, and I would expect it to. symbol-colour point station [0 100 0] # changes the station point colour as well as entrance 'omega' symbol and any text associated with it. symbol-colour point station-name [0 100 0] # changes the station-name label colours. The later two do not distinguish between surface and cave surveys however. Comments? Are these features, bugs, works in progress? And this next one is one I've been too lazy to research. Is there a way to control the colour of gridlines (both in plan and elevation) and the labels associated with each? I have managed to do it for plan gridlines with metapost and have been meaning to research for the elevation gridlines & plan and elevation grid labels but have not got around to it to date. Perhaps symbol-colour special grids [80 80 80] or symbol-colour group grids [80 80 80] would be a convenient way to implement it? Bruce

Size of pdf error when final pdf size should be OK
by Bruce 21 Jul '10

21 Jul '10

I'm having a problem with creating pdf plan maps of a smallish area (about 1 km x 1.5km) with a source surface image covering about 5km x 7 km. For a cave in one particular corner (near bottom left) of the larger image it works fine at a scale 1:1000. (It was giving problems with the map produced being much bigger than the cave extent, but Stacho (or was it Martin?) fixed this bug for me.) For another cave elsewhere on the image (sort of top centre) I get the error reported in the scale 1 1000 log file attached, and no output. For this other cave it compiles fine if the surface image is off, or if the surface image is on and the scale is 1:2000 as in the attached scale 1 2000 log file. (Use a text comparator to spot the differences in the two attachments). If I debug the problem run and check the intermediate data.pdf file produced, the cave is plotted on the wrong part of the surface image, but is otherwise perfect. Perhaps the error is due to the size of the pdf page produced as part of an intermediate step, as the final pdf page is well within the 5m size limit. In all cases I am using 'rotate 70' so that may be adding a small complication. Any ideas what is going on? Is my guess as to the case likely to be correct? Might it be possible to get a 1:1000 output (1.5m long) without chopping my overall source image into smaller pieces? After all, it works in one case and not another. Regards Bruce

"Colour by date"
by Graham Mullan 14 Jul '10

Colour by date can sometimes be a useful tool for viewing 3d files in Aven, especially when viewing to different datasets for the same passage in parallel. However, 3d files generated by Therion, as opposed to Survex, don't seem to support this feature. There does not seem to be a similar feature in Lox. Might it be possible to implement this at some point? Graham --- graham.mullan(a)coly.org.uk 0117 9502556 or 07887 637064 (or try 0844 2327803)

Hello Dirk, it is a bug, that if you do not select any survey, no project title is shown in lox. I will try to fix it. But when you select survey to export, than that survey name should be shown in the project title. Example: If you have in your data: survey cave -title "My cave" And then in thconfig you will use: select cave export model than "My cave" should be shown in indicator area. HTH, S. Hello, is it possible to get a height-point with a "P"-prefix? (pit) point 0 0 height -value [85 m] Or should I use a label point? point 0 0 remark -text "P85" point 0 0 label -text "P85" Thanks!

TerrainTool and Therion
by Bruce 17 Jun '10

17 Jun '10

I tried a pre release version a couple of days ago, and it works just fine. Bruce -----Original Message----- From: survex-bounces(a)survex.com [mailto:survex-bounces@survex.com] On Behalf Of Mike McCombe Sent: Friday, 18 June 2010 6:52 a.m. To: survex(a)survex.com Subject: TerrainTool and Therion There is now a new version of TerrainTool (1.07) which allows terrain data to be saved in Therion "surface" format. More details and download are available from the UBSS website http://www.ubss.org.uk or e-mail me. Best regards, Mike McCombe -- Survex http://lists.survex.com/mailman/listinfo/survex

Cross-sections plotted independently of cave passage
by Bruce 15 Jun '10

15 Jun '10

Up until now I've been creating cross-section scraps and inserting them within plan or elevation scraps using a statement like; point 331.25 -43.0 section -scrap BX-Ent2PLANxs-24 This is how I think it is usually done(?) It works fine most of the time, but sometimes the density of passages is such that the cross-section needs to be on the far side of the page, or maybe you prefer to group the cross-sections together in their own little table. This makes including the cross-section insertion points within plan or elevation scraps impractical I think. Some time back there were discussions on this forum about alternative ways of presenting cross-sections however I am not sure if they were resolved. Something in the Therion Book made me think this might give interesting results. 1. Add one or more cross-section scraps to a map (or maps) of type -projection none 2. Export those maps to a map output. So perhaps the result below is interesting, but I'm not sure how I might develop it further into a means of presenting the cross-sections where the sections are not plotted adjacent to the plan or elevation of the passage. The trouble is all the cross-section maps plot on top of each other. One way might be to export each cross-section one at a time then have lots of map-image statements to add them to a final master map. This would be a very messy th-config file. Or would a plan scrap with no associated survey, and lots of 'point x y section -scrap <scrap>' work? Has anyone tried to layout cross-sections independent of the passage without resorting to post processing? Bruce (Example below) map BX-Ent2SectionsA \ -projection none BX-Ent2PLANxs-24 BX-Ent2PLANxs-94 endmap map BX-Ent2SectionsB \ -projection none BX-Ent2PLANxs-36 BX-Ent2PLANxs-27 endmap . export map -projection none \ -layout LayoutMapThisCave \ -layout LayoutMapThisCaveElev \ -layout-scale 1 100 \ -layout-scale-bar 10 m \ -output ../Outputs/CaveSections.pdf
