PROJ error - no usable coordinate transformation found (not matching proj.db file version)
by Alexandru Pologea 12 Jan '25

After installing therion 6.3.3 (and Survex 1.4.15) on Windows 10 Pro, I get this error: "no usable coordinate transformation found" Full log here: https://pastebin.com/Dkn95nzE It seems that Therion uses the PROJ installation from my QGIS installation (QGIS updated the PROJ path and it points to proj.db file path from QGIS's PROJ package). After installing updated PROJ separately using << osgeo4w-setup.exe -q -k -r -A -s https://download.osgeo.org/osgeo4w/v2/ -P proj >> I get a similar error. This time it doesn't find the proj.db file at all: https://pastebin.com/TcEDbKmF It seems like Therion/PROJ library is using the path defined in the PROJ_LIB path variable so you need to set it back to the proj.db file version path that comes in the therion installation directory, in my case: SET PROJ_LIB="C:\Program Files\Therion\lib\proj-9\" You can set this globally or for the current batch session only if you don't want permanent path modification, in case QGIS or other software need it as it was before. If you want to see details on errors from PROJ library, you can set a debug flag SET PROJ_DEBUG=3 Is there another fix? Maybe a future fix would be for Therion to use it's PROJ distributable instead of the default one in the system, if possible. Message missing in mail-archive
by Ola Löfquist 29 Dec '24

29 Dec '24

Hi Dec 1, I sent a question "Centerline and splay shots in GIS shape file". This was the first time for me using the Therion mailing list. Therefore, I was extra cautious regarding if my message was sent correctly and reached out to the mailing list. Afterwards, I noticed that my message can be found here: https://mailman.speleo.sk/pipermail/therion/2024-December/subject.html But it can't be found here: https://www.mail-archive.com/therion@speleo.sk/maillist.html How can this be? Has the message reached out to everyone? Is there a risk that answers were neglected? Kind regards //Ola Löfquist

Centerline and splay shots in GIS shape file
by Ola Löfquist 29 Dec '24

29 Dec '24

Hi When I export the therion project as a shape file for GIS, both the centerline and splay shots are grouped under the attribute TYPE --> centerline. I was expecting the splay shots to have its own category. Is this the expected behavior? If so, is there a way to only export the centerline? See attached screenshots from QGIS. These are my lines of code in thconfig: # ESRI ARCMAP export map -projection plan \ -output ../Output/shape2d \ -enable all \ -format esri Kind regards //Ola Löfquist Sweden [image: Qgis - Centerline.png]

Scope of calibrate directive
by Bill Gee 25 Dec '24

25 Dec '24

In a file of centerline data - What is the scope of the "calibrate" directive? If "calibrate" is specified at the top of a file, does its effect end at the end of that file? Can "calibrate" be specified partway through the shots? Is there a way to reset the effect of "calibrate", similar to the way "flags splay off" can be used? I have a file of centerline data where most - but not all - of the length measurements need an offset added. We had tails on the DistoX devices but forgot to change the internal setting to adjust for it. Most shots need 74mm added - but not all! We found one DistoX which was correctly set. Fortunately the shots it was used for are easily identified. There are several other files of centerline data which do not need offsets, and I want to make sure the effect of "calibrate" is limited to those shots where it is needed. Thanks! -- =============== Bill Gee

It affects every subsequent shot in the centerline block, until another calibrate statement overrides it. It does not affect the shots before it was declared.

Thanks I found the way to make it run. I still have to found how to add it to my PATH environment variable. I I thought I did it but it don't work. Hello, Is there a way to display in a legend of a lookup explo-date the explo length of the relative year? I know how to do it via sql database query but not in tex. And while I’m at it, how can I modify date format of the ‘currentdate’ legend variable? >From YYYY:MM:DD to DD:MM:YYYY for example. Thanks ! Martin

Entering survey sketch without walls
by Bill Gee 11 Dec '24

11 Dec '24

Hello everyone - Yesterday we started a survey project in an abandoned mine. This is a room-and-pillar limestone mine all on one level. The mine is claimed to cover 35 acres (about 14 hectares). We ran centerline around part of the periphery for a bit over 3000 feet and came nowhere near to finishing. There was no sketch because we were really looking to place some of the entrances. The mine is a known hibernaculum for tri-color bats which will soon be on the endangered species list. It is also an attractive nuisance. There have been several "lost person/out of light" rescues in there, and many drunken parties. The mine is owned by a municipality. Financial resources are in place to gate all entrances, probably during summer 2025 after the bats leave. Looking forward, we ARE going to do a full cartographic map of this mine. That leads to my question for this group. When we start doing sketch, there will be many sections that have no outside wall at all. There will be inside wall to define the pillars. Therion has a very strong dependency on walls. How can sketch like this be used in Therion? I would be very glad to have hints and tips from anyone who has done a survey like this. Thanks! -- =============== Bill Gee
