Suggestion to add new flags for survey shots?
by Xavier Robert 17 Sep '24

Dear all, Some weeks ago, I commented the issue « https://github.com/therion/therion/issues/571 <https://github.com/therion/therion/issues/571> ( Suggestion to add new flags for survey shots) » on Github. So far, I have not seen any answers, so I forward it there in case of someone is interested in and/or is able to update Therion with such a new feature: I do not know if this is easy to code or not, but I completely agree with cctrunz, it would be very usefull also for me to add new flags for survey shots. I am interesting in "artificial", but also in something like "active meander"/"active gallery", "active phreatic gallery", "fossil phreatic gallery", etc. One suggestion could be that somewhere (in centerline blocks? In a config file (better?)?), the Therion user could define its proper shot flags names with a syntax like: def_flags "MyNewFlag" "MNF" where "MyNewFlag" is the name of the flag use in the command flags, and MNF correspond to the 3-letters string associated to this flag in the sql database (and in the ESRI/shp export?). That means that some cases have to be considered: • if the new flag definition exists and is used in centerline(s) --> update the database accordingly • if the new flag definition does not exist and a new flag is used in a centerline: 1) raise a warning during the compilation indicating the presence of an undefined flag, and 2) update the shot database by adding a flag_name by default as "udf" (undefined?). I will be very interested in that feature for large and long-lived network analysis purposes (i.e. extract only a certain type of conduit for instance). I am sure it will strongly extend the possibilities of Therion survey database post-analysis. Thanks a lot, Cheers Xavier

Trouble generating kml
by Philippe Vernant 28 Aug '24

28 Aug '24

Hi guys, This is the first time I encounter that issue. No warning whatsoever, the marker is at the right place with the name of the cave, but the legs of the survey are not in the kml file. This is a simple survey without th2 drawings, only legs and LRUD values. If I generate the map, profile or .lox of the cave it works fine. Has anyone came across that, any idea on what I’m doing wrong ? Thanks, Phil

Lookup explo-date - avoiding overlying scraps
by Pavel Herich 07 Aug '24

Hi, do you see a way how to avoid certain scrap representation (by transparent imprint) in pdf as overlaying part of cave while using lookup (explo-date), as can be seen in the middle of map explo-date_1978.pdf? explo-date_2024.pdf represents the whole cave, in blue is a cave passage discovered in 2024, which is overlaying discovery from 1978. My point is to be able to show the cave as it was known before newest discovery, without signs of newer parts... Lookup is following: lookup explo-date -title "Postup objavných prác" [0.1.1 1977.12.31] [0 0 0 100] "známe oddávna" [1978.1.1 1978.12.31] [0 100 100 0] "" [1979.1.1 2024.12.31] [0 0 0 0] "" endlookup Many thanks Pavel

group endgroup pairs do not constrain metadata to just the grouped shots
by Bruce Mutton 26 Jul '24

The Therion Book says that group/endgroup pairs enable the user to make temporary changes in almost any setting (calibrate, units, sd, data, flags...) This is not in practice the case for date, team, explo-date, explo-team, and is described in https://github.com/therion/therion/issues/131 What actually happens is that these entries are applied to ALL of the shots within the centreline (as far as any outputs report), so they are not 'temporary changes'. In other words, the effect is the same if the group/endgroup statements are omitted. At least as far as I can tell with limited testing. If the presence of the group/endgroup has no effect for the above, what about calibrate, units, sd, etc? I suggest Therion should throw a warning or error if settings or metadata applied in a group block will effectively apply to all shots in that centreline. Thoughts? Bruce

Visibility of underlying objects in PDF viewers
by Paul Rowe 21 Jun '24

Hi, I'm mostly using the Sumatra PDF viewer to open my Therion PDF outputs as it doesn't lock the PDF file when it's open and you can then keep updating the map without closing / opening the PDF output each time. However, I've noticed that Sumatra PDF doesn't seem to hide underlying objects in the final view, while some other PDF viewers like Acrobat do. Has anyone else noted this? I wasn't sure if it was a quirk in how the PDF is constructed by Therion or whether the issue is in Sumatra. Example passage with 'area' of debris using "-place bottom", with overlapping closed circles of larger hand-sketched boulders using "-place top". Sumatra view [image: image.png] Acrobat view: [image: image.png] I'm hoping this is something I can fix on the Therion side as end users of the PDF can end up with a map that's difficult to read if they're using some PDF viewers. The built-in PDF viewer in Firefox and Chrome has the same issue. Cheers, Paul

Looking for TopParser sources
by Bruce Mutton 17 Jun '24

Kia ora I'm just putting together a list of links to suggested Therion ecosystem software. Notice that the link to a TopParser zip file in the Therion wiki seems to have broken https://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/contrib:complimentarycaveapps#topparser I can zip up the files I have, but probably better to link to Andrew's source. Re: [Therion] Therion Digest, Vol 221, Issue 2

Thanks Bill. Marco has clarified that "point:photo" in Topodroid is not complete. So, essentially, I shouldn't be using it. Event if it were complete, Therion is not programmed to handle it. As you suggest, in Therion it is simply placing a symbol, in this case a symbol that looks like a camera. After what you say about placing photos being a pain, I'm now leaning toward putting the camera symbol on the map with a reference number associated with it and providing the images in separate lookup table somewhere. That probably serves my purpose just as well. In Topodroid the point is associated with a photograph in .jpg format. The export .th2 file shows a line like this : point 258.69 97.28 photo -text "a photo" -photo 1.jpg I'm trying to get a photo image to appear on the map at that point. Therion doesn't like the -text or the -photo parameters. The Therion book doesn't say a lot about it and doesn't include those parameters or any others relating specifically to the photo point type. Is there any way to use the point data from Topodroid to actually place the image on the map. It looks like it can't be done natively so maybe some Metapost code that will interpret the data and write the image? I don't know Metapost well enough to know if it can be done. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Nigel
