Re: [Therion] new Therion?
by Philip Schuchardt 19 Dec '15

Hey, I'm the primary developer for Cavewhere. I though I would chime in. Cavewhere is open source, under the GPL, although I think I need to actually upload that bit (tonight). It's currently on github, as mentioned on a previous post. It currently runs under, Windows, Mac, and Ubuntu Linux. Since most linux users are complete computers nerds, they get the fun job of compiling it themselves. Although my friend, Jon L is creating a debian installer. I need to check with him on the status of that. Cavewhere only currently produces centerlines from survex and compass imports. We do have plans to generate walls from LRUDs. It's just not a high priority because 5 other software projects (survex, compass, walls, breakout, therion) already do it. I do have 5km cave in therion that I'll probably want to imported into cavewhere some day. That feature isn't really on the horizon. I'll probably never support therion as a backend because it's simply to much work and there are better painting libraries out there. That being said there's no painting capabilities in Cavewhere. This could be added in the future since Qt support a very powerful painting engine call QGraphicsScene. Currently we're more focused on creating quick working maps from sketches. We're in the process of converting Cavewhere's sqlite / protobuf (binary format) into human readable json format call Metacave (https://github.com/jedwards1211/metacave) This will allow cavewhere files to play nicely with version control and humans... @Martin, I'm not sure why Cavewhere is a US only app? I've used on China expos ;). If any of you have some helpful hints you can post them on cavewhere's bug tracker or email me directly. Also I apologize in advance for fragmenting the cave software space even more! This is just a fun side project of mine, and you don't have to use it. BTW, we do use survex for loop closure, so no worries there. :D Wahoo! Phi|ip

How do you survey and process Pits to get smooth 3d model in Loch?
by Nikita Kozlov 13 Dec '15

13 Dec '15

Hello! I've found that having a detailed walls within extended elevation scraps plus several horizontal x-sections as a "plan" scraps produces a "stairs"-looking pits. Walls in [elevation <some_value>] scraps seems to did not affect the shape of pits in 3d model at all. Maybe there are another method for surveying and organizing data to get pits smooth and detailed in loch 3d model? When surveying horizontal caves, plan and extended elevation produces nice, smooth 3d model, but with rectangular x-sections. I did not try yet to add real x-sections as [elevation <some_value>] scraps, but it seems that 3d model will became again "stairy". Am I doing it right or wrong? Or that is therion software limitations atm?

Which line are LRUDs perpendicular to?
by Bill Gee 12 Dec '15

12 Dec '15

Hello everyone - The recent discussion about LRUDs brings up another question I have. Take some example data ... ======== data normal from to tape compass clino backcompass backclino left right up down # Main survey shots A1 A2 8.4 72.5 -52 252 +53 3 5 3 6 A2 A3 6.7 67 -10 248 +10 2.2 1 2 1.4 A3 A4 48.0 28 +2 208 -1.5 4 5 0.7 1.1 ======== For each shot the LRUD data is taken at the "to" station. Does Therion assume this data is perpendicular to the line going to the next station? Or is it perpendicular to the line coming in from the previous station? At station A2 - Does Therion treat the LRUD data as perpendicular to A1-A2 or as perpendicular to A2-A3? Thanks - Bill Gee

change palette for color map-fg altitude
by Henry_Bennett＠Dell.com 12 Dec '15

12 Dec '15

Hi, "color map-fg altitude" will color the map passage by scrap according to its relative elevation and works well. I'd like to customise the color pallete to avoid the blue on blue I get for river cave. I've modified the water in the example below to be blue too. Anyone know where the palette is defined? LRUD for the "from" station.
by Bertrand Hauser 10 Dec '15

10 Dec '15

Hello, I have a long list of data with LRUD given for the "from" station of the shot. When I have, for example, this line : data normal from to length clino compass right left up down A B 5.48 -4.2 1.22 1.04 18.5 3.53 0.80 B C ..... The LRUD datas refers to the station B. Is there a way to tell to therion that LRUD datas refer to station A ? Naturaly, I can copy/paste each LRUD data to the previous line or extracting the LRUD datas to an new directive : data dimensions station right left up down A 1.22 1.04 18.5 3.53 0.80 B .... C .... But is there a way to avoid the modification of the order of my actual datas ? I haven't find the answer in the Thbook, but it's possible that I miss something. Thanks, Bertrand

Multilingual Legend / Legend Formatting
by Henry_Bennett＠Dell.com 07 Dec '15

07 Dec '15

Hi, Trying to produce a multilingual legend that shows two (or more) languages. I thought I could simply use text substitution to achieve this in my thconfig file. Source cave.th text en "area sand" "sand<br>darat" text en "area water" "water<br>danum" export map ... This works great except the formatting of the legend is borked. As you can see the text is vertically aligned with the middle of the text against the top of the legend box. [cid:image003.png@01D12DD3.9A7B0D40] th_legend.tex looks like this \line{% \legendsymbolbox{\THLaaab}{\thfb\char119 \char97 \char108 \char108 \mainfont{}}\hskip10pt \legendsymbolbox{\THLaaaj}{\thfb\char99 \char104 \char105 \char109 \char110 \char101 \char121 \mainfont{}}\hskip10pt \legendsymbolbox{\THLaabh}{\vbox{\halign{#\hfil\cr\cr \thfb\char115 \char97 \char110 \char100 \cr\thfb \char100 \char97 \char114 \char97 \char116 \cr}}\mainfont{}}\hskip10pt \legendsymbolbox{\THLaacf}{\thfb\char112 \char111 \char105 \char110 \char116 \ \char115 \char116 \char97 \char108 \char97 \char99 \char116 \char105 \char116 \char101 \char115 \mainfont{}}\hskip10pt \hss} The legend boxes get drawn using metapost and the labels with TEX. Although I can modify the metapost I can't see the template for the TEX. Any ideas where I could modify the alignment? Alternatively is there a way of specifying the legend language mid creation so I could have two legends, one for each language? Controlling map location on page
by Michael Perryman 07 Dec '15

07 Dec '15

I'm just starting with Therion. I have the same problem as a user back in 2012: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gis.therion/3066 When using "export map" my map is at the top right corner of the page, with much white space to left and bottom. I could not see a satisfactory resolution in the above thread, although I assume its possible (simple). In the .th file I have defined: cs OSGB:SN fix 1.0 xxxx yyyy zzzz and in a "layout definition" in the .th file I have tried some combinations along the lines of cs OSGB:SN origin xxxx yyyy zzzz metres (or grid-origin...) but without any success in moving the map in the output pdf Thanks for any pointers...

Survey team names ordering
by Michael Perryman 05 Dec '15

is it really not possible to control the order of member of a survey team other than (a) lexically; (b) according to length of passage surveyed, as implied at: http://therion.speleo.sk/wiki/doku.php/faq#why_do_peoples_names_sort_alphab… Any advice welcomed!

File transfer from PDA to Mac?
by Archie King 23 Nov '15

23 Nov '15

Anyone know of a simple way of browsing/transferring (PocketTopo) files from a PDA (I have a Dell Axim X51, running Windows Mobile V5) to a Mac (OS 10.11.1)? Transferring files to a pc, and then to a Mac is an option (but I don't have a pc, and would prefer not to go via a pc emulator on the Mac). Thanks
