GMANE working again
by Bruce Mutton 09 Jun '17

09 Jun '17

I notice the wiki links to old forum posts on GMANE are working again. Anyone know if this is likely to be a permanent change? Or should we use this as an opportunity to convert them all to Mail Archive links, while GMANE is hanging in there? Bruce

Therion 5.4.1 on Fedora 25 - Compile fails in loch
by Bill Gee 09 Jun '17

09 Jun '17

Hello everyone - Once again I am wrestling with the ancient problem of getting loch to compile on Fedora Linux. Below is the sequence of errors that I get. I think I can modify the Therion Makefile so that it skips loch, but I would rather not do that. Some versions ago I figured out a set of changes to the loch Makefile that allowed it to compile. The listing below shows those changes. They do not work anymore, as seen by the compiler error. In the second set of errors it is saying that some libraries cannot be found. I do not find any files by these exact names. They probably have some extension, perhaps .so? But I do not find any files with that extension either. vtkIO.so does not exist. Two questions for the group: 1) Exactly what files are missing? I very likely have them, just not where the compiler is looking. If I can find them, maybe I can add something to VTKLIBPATH. 2) Is there an easier way to deal with this? Why is it that Fedora always has problems? It should Just Work. -- Bill Gee ===== Using the providede Makefile for loch: make -C ./loch make[1]: Entering directory '/home/bgee/Installs/therion-5.4.1/loch' gcc -c -Wall -D_GNU_SOURCE -DLOCH -DLXLINUX -I/usr/lib64/wx/include/gtk3- unicode-3.0 -I/usr/include/wx-3.0 -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -DWXUSINGDLL - D__WXGTK__ -pthread -O2 -o /home/bgee/Installs/therion.bin/loch/lxR2P.o lxR2P.c gcc -c -Wall -D_GNU_SOURCE -DLOCH -DLXLINUX -I/usr/lib64/wx/include/gtk3- unicode-3.0 -I/usr/include/wx-3.0 -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -DWXUSINGDLL - D__WXGTK__ -pthread -O2 -o /home/bgee/Installs/therion.bin/loch/lxTR.o lxTR.c c++ -c -Wall -D_GNU_SOURCE -DLOCH -DLXLINUX -I/usr/lib64/wx/include/gtk3- unicode-3.0 -I/usr/include/wx-3.0 -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -DWXUSINGDLL - D__WXGTK__ -pthread -Wno-deprecated -I/usr/include/freetype2 -I/usr/local/ include/vtk-5.4 -O2 -o /home/bgee/Installs/therion.bin/loch/lxOGLFT.o lxOGLFT.cxx c++ -c -Wall -D_GNU_SOURCE -DLOCH -DLXLINUX -I/usr/lib64/wx/include/gtk3- unicode-3.0 -I/usr/include/wx-3.0 -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -DWXUSINGDLL - D__WXGTK__ -pthread -Wno-deprecated -I/usr/include/freetype2 -I/usr/local/ include/vtk-5.4 -O2 -o /home/bgee/Installs/therion.bin/loch/lxSetup.o lxSetup.cxx In file included from lxSetup.h:23:0, from lxSetup.cxx:38: lxData.h:34:25: fatal error: vtkPolyData.h: No such file or directory #include <vtkPolyData.h> ^ compilation terminated. Loch fails to start in Debian
by Bjørn Egil Johansen 01 Jun '17

01 Jun '17

I have a fairly fresh Debian 9 Stretch 64bit install , using propietary NVIDIA-drivers. Therion from debian repositories 5.3.16-10+b4 When trying to open Loch i encountered this error: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module" The program 'loch' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'. (Details: serial 21 error_code 2 request_code 154 minor_code 3) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) I had libcanberra-gtk3-module installed, but i also installed libcanberra-gtk-module, but still could not open Loch, giving this error: The program 'loch' received an X Window System error. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) I thing this might be a OpenGL-related error. lshw gives: *-display description: VGA compatible controller product: GM204 [GeForce GTX 970] vendor: NVIDIA Corporation physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:01:00.0 version: a1 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=nvidia latency=0 resources: irq:33 memory:f6000000-f6ffffff memory:e0000000-efffffff memory:f0000000-f1ffffff ioport:e000(size=128) memory:c0000-dffff Aven works just fine. Aven, About Aven report is at the end ot this email. I notice that this problem is very similar to a problem Andrew Atkinson reported back in 2011. Earlier i tried running Loch in ubuntu 16.04 on the same machine with propietary nvidia-drivers and failing as well, but I never attempted any debuging on that install. I have not tried Loch with the noveau-driver. Is there any use trying it? What would be the next step to try to debug this problem? can survey id be called recursively
by Bruce Mutton 29 May '17

29 May '17

Ok, Now I feel like a beginner, having to ask this question. I have for years created my .th files like this, more or less. input 1-BottomUpPlan.th2 map 1-BottomUpPlanCL -title "1-BottomUp plan centreline" -projection plan 1 # this works fine endmap map 1-BottomUpPlan -title "1-BottomUp plan" -projection plan 1-BottomUpPlan-s1 endmap survey 1 -title "1-BottomUp" centreline etc endcentreline endsurvey This is contrary to the current good advice, and the way TopParser works, which suggests that maps should be created inside the survey, as this makes referencing the scraps easier and more consistent when they are part of a large project. So with this brand new project, I rearranged my 1-BottomUp.th file like this, to try to follow good practice . survey 1 -title "1-BottomUp" input 1-BottomUpPlan.th2 map 1-BottomUpPlanCL -title "1-BottomUp plan centreline" -projection plan 1 # this always causes error at this location "object does not exist - 1" endmap map 1-BottomUpPlan -title "1-BottomUp plan" -projection plan 1-BottomUpPlan-s1 endmap centreline etc endcentreline endsurvey Trouble is, the Therion Compiler always reports an error "object does not exist - 1" when I try to create a small map with just the centreline of survey 1. I have tried a number of variations of the above, with versions from 5.3.16 to 5.4.1, and the only way I can get it to compile is with the arrangement at the top of this post; how I have always done it for years and years. So it looks like Therion is complaining about calling the survey "1" from within the definition of survey "1". I would not have thought this were a problem, as it seems like Therion is generally happy to do this sort of thing. Is it some kind of namespace problem? Or is there some other thing I am missing? Is it not possible to create a map of containing only a survey centreline, from within that same survey? Bruce

Therion 5.4.1 Windows crash if survex loop-closure
by Bruce Mutton 29 May '17

29 May '17

I've just started catching up on a drawing project since 5.4.1 has been released. A while back I reported problems with beta versions of Therion related to 'loop-closure survex'. They were fixed in 5.4.0 Now using 5.4.1 those projects/thconfigs that crashed before now seem to be OK, but I have now found another project/thconfig that crashes with 5.4.1 but not with 5.4.0 5.4.1 runs OK with 'loop-closure therion' but gets killed by Windows 10 when I use 'loop-closure survex'. Am still using survex 1.2.27. I have attached the log file with 'loop-closure survex'. Not sure if it is related, but I notice that if I install 5.4.1 'Install Only for Me' it will not overwrite a previously installed 5.4.0, even though the installer does not report any errors or problems to the user. Ie it fails even though it looks like it has worked just fine. To get 5.4.1 to overwrite 5.4.0 I need to "Install for all users". Bruce

Question/Problem with customizing text labels
by Torsten Schnitter 21 May '17

21 May '17

Hi all I have a question concerning customizing text labels. Drawing a map with scale 1:250 is ok. Just some points a very small on the map. Therefore I would like to resize these points and make them bigger. For example: "point x y passage-height -value [- 10 m]" generates the wanted symbol, a number with a frame around. But it's to small (attached picture passage-height-1.jpg). I add the option "-scale xl". Now it's a little bit bigger but still to small (attached picture passage-height-2.jpg). Finally I use within the layout command: code metapost fonts_setup(6,8,10,14,36); endcode Now the number is looking good in size but the frame around is not correct anymore (attached picture passage-height-3.jpg). Is there a solution for this problem? Or is there any other option to resize single points or lines (like "point passage-heigt" or "line label" ...)? I'm looking forward for any help. Thanks, Torsten

Re: [Therion] same color for several scraps
by Martin Sluka 26 Apr '17

26 Apr '17

That is a bit problem, because Therion is not able in any way to calculate correct vertical position of scraps. It is theoretically impossible. Correct way could be to define another map from scraps which are above and other map from scraps which a below: map all.map -projection plan above.map break below.map endmap You may define as many different maps as you need in your project and select the proper one in the thconfig. m.s. Do I have to look for something wrong in my scraps, or is it that therion compute an average altitude for map1 and map2 and lay all the scraps based on this average elevation rather that the average elevation of each scraps ? same color for several scraps
by Philippe Vernant 26 Apr '17

Hi guys, I’m trying the option [color] or [colour] to specify the same color for different scraps and it is not working. I have therion 5.4.0 compiled on Mac OS. Here what I use : map m1p -projection plan -color [0 70 0] baign-p1 baign-p2 pend-p1 gphal-p2 gphal-p4 gphal-p3 endmap end the error message is : therion: error -- maplist.th [3] -- unknown option -- -color Any clue ? I have never used Lat/Long but I do have a quite extensive data set that uses two different EPSG numbers, one UTM - and I think there's an IOS or two in there somewhere but cannot find them quickly - and this has generated a lox file that seems to have put everything in the right places. I have only ever seen "computer says no" messages when there have been sections where the co-ordinate system had not been specified at all. I'd be wary about stating the cs in your thconfig file as that will clash if a different cs has been used elsewhere in the data set, I think. Graham
