Hello Theron community / need help for Therion install
by franck TUOT 31 Aug '17

Hi, I live in Vancouver Island, Caving there for two years now. We have some interesting project going on here. I tried to install Therion on my mac few days ago. It seems like the final installation doesn’t work for me. I’ve followed all the steps on your website (that’s great by the way). Since I’m not a genius in computer, my competence to play in the terminal and write code are limited. I tried few option with a friend but he finally suggest me to contact you. My only problem is the last command : to launch Therion or Xtherion. my computer can’t find that file and I can’t find it neither in my therion folder. I will join to this e-mail a copy of my terminal use during the installation. Maybe you can help me to solve it, this might be a mistake from me during the installation process. Thanks a lot in advance, talk to you soon ! Franck

mud!
by Rob Countess 28 Aug '17

28 Aug '17

So, Still a therion noob despite having put all my data over. Finally working on cave maps not just line plots, thanks to a caving buddy who is leading the charge. So this seems strange but.... why is there no mud area symbol? I am sure someone else has already addressed this. I cant be the only person to survey in a muddy cave. Surprised really, my floor detail is usually sand, cobbles, mud, water or breakdown. I've never really had to use clay or debris. Can someone help put the mud into my cave maps? It seems like such a common and important floor area, can someone with the expertise make it so that mud just comes up on the drop down area list in map editor? Rob Countess

min-symbol-scale and fonts-setup
by Bruce Mutton 26 Aug '17

26 Aug '17

At long last I thought I'd try out the new font-setup layout syntax and min-symbol-scale. There has been no feedback since it was released so I assumed all must be working perfectly. I have found some issues though. The min-symbol-scale does not seem to hide wall point altitudes. A bug I presume. And there are some new disciplines to drawing, like it you don't make your arrows have the same -scale as the labels they are associated with, things look a bit odd with some min-symbol-scale combinations. That is OK, just something new to do. However, min-symbol-scale l and min-symbol-scale xl both tend to hide the cave walls, which naturally enough have -scale m by default I suppose. This is problematic, as it tends to hide the very essence of the cave map that one wants to emphasize by hiding the smaller symbols! It just leaves behind areas, map-connections, and xl symbols and text. I am hoping to get to the point where I can hide all text except that which is larger than -scale xl. ie I'd like to use something like min-symbol-scale xl to hide most text and symbols, and fonts-setup to set the size of xl to 0. Then I am hoping that any text that has a -scale (number) that happens to be greater than the size of xl will continue to be displayed. Useful for applying labels to the likes of overview maps, say at 1:5000. Liberal usage of symbol-hide as well. I abandoned trying this just now due to the problem with displaying walls. fonts-setup works similar to the old original code metapost fonts_setup(6,8,10,12,16); but seems to have too many checks and limitations. They both have the problem that you cannot set the font size to zero (you get error code 3). Setting the metapost font size to 0.01 works, but you do get messy dots and extra file size, as the text is still in the pdf. fonts-setup layout does not like having font sizes out of order (each must be larger than the next) and if not it crashes. I would prefer a warning, as I can imagine uses where one might want to hide the largest text only, or to have some -scales equal. fonts-setup also complains if the size for xs is 0.01 I wonder if fonts-setup could include some coding trick to allow a font size of zero to remove the text from the output? And allow more flexibility in fonts-setup usage? I am using 5.4.1 + 88c8a06 Bruce

Doubled legend and cyrillic in metapost
by андрей коженков 15 Aug '17

Dear Therion users, I've got few issues with map header customization using metapost and tex code. 1. Then I am trying to move north arrow and legend somehere away from main map header using "\def\maplayout {\legendbox{5}{90}{NW}}" code the legend and norh arrow is printed twice. I'm sure I've made a mistake here but after few days of messing with the code result is still the same. 2. Then I use custom scalebar code from Therion wiki everything seem to work fine with latin text "Scale 1 : 100" but if I try to change this to cyrillic "Масштаб 1 : 100" compiling fails with: error -- metapost exit code -- 3 Is it something wrong with metapost installation or system variables or the fact that some encodings became an addon in recent version? I am using Therion 5.4.1 on Windows 7 x64. 3. Is there a way to define a custom point showing depth rather than altitude? Point "altitude" is using "thaltitude" or "thheight" variablles to get altitude value but can we use "thaltitude - cavemaxz" expression to calculate the tdepth? Or maybe there is some metapost code to define a depth-bar instead of altitude grid? I'm attaching the project. Any advice is much appreciated! P.S. sorry for Russian comments in the code... hope it will be more or less straightforward to understand. -- Thanks, Andrey

Joining scraps and PDF layouts
by Steven Tucker 15 Aug '17

15 Aug '17

Hello, I am busy completing a survey of a cave and I am running into two problems with the final PDF First problem. There are water areas that cross over two scraps and the water is coloured blue. In the PDF file, the line where the two scraps join show a thin white line. The kml and loch files don't show any split between the joint scraps. Any idea how to fix this? Second problem. I would like to display the cave name, scalebar etc in one area of the PDF and have my legend in a seperate area of the PDF, but I can't figure out how to do this. Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks in advance, Steven

Mud and clay
by Graham Mullan 14 Aug '17

Rob Countess wrote: " Well, in my mind, clay is a more specifically defined substance based on mineral content and particle size. Mud is larger particles, more organics, and less homogenous. Clay is what you make pots from and is less frequent in Canadian caves in my experience ..." Clay is something more of a technical term and means a sediment with particle sizes in the range 0.98–3.9 µm. This is finer than silt and much finer than sand. Mud, on the other hand is not a technical term being defined as a mixture of 'earth' or 'dirt' and water. It is difficult to think of a circumstance where a symbol for mud might be required that isn't covered by clay, silt or sand unless you are looking at fairly recently deposited material with a large organic component which might be better considered as 'flood debris' and possibly too ephemeral to mark on a map? Just my thoughts. Graham

Line Colours in Map Editor with 5.4.1
by Footleg 12 Aug '17

Having finally got around to updating my install to 5.4.1 I was trying to work out how the line colours had appeared in the official builds (I'm on Windows). I see the ini file entries in both xtherion.ini and xtherion.new.ini, all commented out in both files. So I am assuming the colours are set by some hard coded defaults unless over ridden in the ini file? Why are there two ini files? Are they both used by the application? When this feature was first provided (via the email list) for testing, I commented that some of the default colours were not ideal from my experience. In particular the use of 'brown' for unselected walls in the active scrap is not so easy to tell from the red selected item. As users are already accustomed to the blue wall lines in the active scrap, I changed this one to blue. Rock borders look the same colour as survey legs and splays in background sketches brought in from PocketTopo, so I changed these to purple. So the only two changes I have to add into my ini file are: set xth(gui,me,wallcolor) blue set xth(gui,me,rockcolor) purple The blue walls work well with the blue controlfill because the control points only appear on selected lines, where the line is turned red. So this is not confused with blue wall lines which are not selected. I would like to propose these colours be made the defaults as I think it makes the editor easier to use, and I would like to reflect the default colours in the screenshots in my tutorial documents when I update them to reflect the latest release.
