I have used Corel Photopaint (the same "overkill" :)) ) to rotate just transection drawings only in the whole map, which was still included as the background image in a large system map. I have had no problems with that.. Regards, Tomas Bohanes

rotating images
by Wookey 11 Jul '05

It would be useful to be able to rotate imported images. I have just done a couple of files which have the scan done in two parts. In both cases the images needed to be rotated to line up. In one case only a degree or so so I could just bodge it, but in the second case the difference is 15 degrees so had to be done. So far as I know the only way to do this at the moment is do the rotations in some external package such as the gimp, which is a bit of a faff. Calcite area type needed
by Wookey 11 Jul '05

11 Jul '05

I'm drawing a cave with large areas of calcite in it. Some way of drawing these areas is needed. Ideally such areas should have some kind of 'direction' or 'contour' info as they are not uniform. Any ideas how we might best implement that? Wookey -- Aleph One Ltd, Bottisham, CAMBRIDGE, CB5 9BA, UK Tel +44 (0) 1223 811679 work: http://www.aleph1.co.uk/ play: http://www.chaos.org.uk/~wookey/

can therion work under the sun ?
by olivier Turlier 11 Jul '05

11 Jul '05

Hello everybody, It is my first message here, so maybe my questions will look a bit silly. I wonder if Therion can be used as a map software for plotting terrains maps with x,y,z points surveyed with a theodolite. In fact, I wish to use it as a topographic soft. TIA for any answer, from Marseille -- Olivier TURLIER

Today I sat down and beat my head against the wall long enough to get useful work from Therion. So far so good! I'm wondering when Therion will be able to read LRUD from survex :) I'd like to try out some of the 3d models. As of v0.3.7 it does read .3d files. If we were organised this would be covered in the FAQ, but it isn't. You need to do: import survexfile.3d In my dataset this is withing a survey dummy endsurvey dummy pair but I think this is no longer necessary in the current code, and you can add options to 'import' to strip off some prefixes to make it match the level of your therion data. It's not trivial to get right though and could do with some examples in the FAQ. import should be documented in the thbook I think. If you read the back-issues of this list from1-2 months ago you can read about this option (problems with it and changes to solve them). SVG export -- labels
by Martin Budaj 30 Mar '05

30 Mar '05

Just working on SVG export. There are more ways how to handle labels -- but no perfect one. 1) Use SVG fonts (embedded). These would be supplied with Therion (converted from TeX fonts used in PDF output). pros: the SVG map will be nearly identical to PDF cons: large file (fonts are embedded) SVG fonts are unhinted hard to edit in drawing programs hard to add new font 2) Use system fonts pros: small file (fonts are not embedded) full unicode support (if unicode fonts are installed) cons: platform dependent problems with precise alignment of labels metapost can't calculate frames (e.g. for passage height) nor clipping paths 3) Use system fonts but supply font metrics for metapost pros: nice output with clipping paths, alignment etc. cons: unportable hard to generate metrics for the regular user 4) Use bitmaps as labels cons: unscalable would require additional convertor uneditable I'd like to get your comments, hints or suggestions, which one to prefer. I'd say the 1st one. Cheers, Martin

Xtherion 0.3.7 connecting to the internet
by Duncan Collis 23 Mar '05

23 Mar '05

Hi. I just started with Therion, so probably there will be many more questions... I've noticed that when I start Xtherion, if I'm not connected to the internet I get a popup message from Win XP telling me that a program attempted to connect to therion.speleo.sk Once I've dismissed the message, Xtherion seems to work fine, but it considerably delays opening the editor. Is there any way I can tell Xtherion not to do this?
