Self adjusting label positions and missing point +s
by Bruce 26 Nov '11

26 Nov '11

I have just discovered a wonderous thing. Where surface points in a survey centreline are included in a map, the labels will self organise so that they don't overlap. See example 1 and 2 attached. This effect goes away I think when the points are included in a scrap. It also does not have effect between separate map objects. Is this default therion behaviour, or is it directly inherited from tex? Could it be implemented in outputs derived from scrap drawings? Now on to my short-term deadline question! Why might example 1 have +s in on all the points and example 2 have all the +s missing? I have not done any redefinition of points (unless by accident, and then they should be identical), and I think my symbol-show, symbol-hides are similar (though not the same I admit). Both the images are from the same dataset, just in different regions a few km apart, and also in different parallel branches of the survey structure, so somewhat independent of each other. Both have caves displayed in a similar manner to example 2, it's just that the caves in example 1 were not included in the screenshot. As you can see, the map structure in example 1 is very simple (the old paper cave map was traced in outline only in therion), whereas example 2 has perhaps 100 maps as it is a 15km cave drawn entirely with therion. I have turned off the layers which would have made the image confusing. Any guesses as to which symbol-show (or other statement) directly effects the + part of the point symbol, as I would like to show them in both cases? I'm also still looking for a way to show the labels for fixed points (and leave other point labels unaffected). What is the 'property' that Loch uses to make the distinction in it's data file? Bruce

New symbols
by Stacho Mudrak 26 Nov '11

26 Nov '11

Hello everybody, after drawing a complex map of one show cave, I would like to add new standard symbols to therion. These should include: line edge - should be used to draw other then rock edges, e.g. wall structures in elevation. There is already rock-border -- rock-edge pair, there is general border symbol but no general edge symbol. line rope - already discussed here, just line point option anchor on|off should work also line handrail - this symbol already exists in some cave symbol sets. A line with dots in plan, in elevation some standard 1m tall handrail would be drawn. point handrail - used to draw handrail in cross-sections line steps - should be used in both, plan / elevation projections. In plan, this line would surround steps area and steps would be drawn parallel to the first line segment. In elevation, 20cm steps would be drawn. line path - used to draw concrete or other path in caves, where it was built. If it will be closed curve, it will be filled with "area path". See below. area path - fill for path areas. It would be automatically applied for closed line steps/path in plan projection. Also should be added: line rope-ladder line fixed-ladder line via-ferrata point via-ferrata Do these symbols make sense? Any comments? Any other symbols, that should exist in the standard therion library? Thanks a lot for the feedback, S.

create area filled with a colour
by Mihai Terente 26 Nov '11

Dear friends, Is there a way to create a simple filled area? Suppose I want to create a black area enclosed by a line of type border to draw the outline of a pillar, which is to big to be represented as a point symbol. Mihai T. www.iser.ro

Pitch that is larger at top than bottom
by Andrew Atkinson 25 Nov '11

25 Nov '11

Hi I have been trying to come up with a solution for the attached diagram. The pitch head is larger that the passage below, so if you turn off outline on the walls and put it on the pitch boundary, the fading goes but the parts where the pitch is on the outside of the passage take on the background colour so it does not look right. I have tied using invisible lines, or even tracing the walls to the survey above, but none of them look right, not sure if there is a solution, but suggestions welcome Andrew

Changing outline on pitches breaks lox
by Andrew Atkinson 25 Nov '11

25 Nov '11

hello Just been changing the outline on a pitch so the bolders below look right on the pdf, by setting the bit of wall to outline none, clip off and the pitch boundary to outline out clip off, see p_before and p_after, the problem is that then the lox model also has a hole in it see l_before and l_after. I suspect this is bug/feature that is hard to get around? Andrew

Scrap is too large to process in metapost in this scale
by Mihai Terente 23 Nov '11

23 Nov '11

Dear friends, I encountered the same problem and I was wondering if someone can figure a solution. I work with a morphed image on the background and the project compiles well with the scraps containing only walls. But if I add to the scrap a station point referenced to a survey (e.g. -name 2400@survey) I get the error. Any suggestion? Mihai T. Footleg drfootleg at gmail.com Wed Mar 9 18:29:08 CET 2011 My files illustrating the problem are my entire project at this stage! There are 2 .th2 files in there. The smaller one is the single scrap which works. The larger one is several scraps where only one is used in the map, and causes the error. Attached in zip. It is not very large so sending to the list. Therion legend and symbols
by Bruce 22 Nov '11

22 Nov '11

Hi I've just got interested in tweaking my legends and have some questions. 1 Removing legend entries ---------------------------------------- I notice that there is no legend entry for 'label' or 'remark', although there are entries for these in the texts.txt (5.3.8) file in the sources. This seems quite sensible to me, as it is generally self evident and no legend entry should be needed. I think that 'arrow' fits in the same category. It seems a bit redundant to have an entry for 'arrow' in the legend. Is there a way for the user to supress particular legend entries? I tried; text en "line arrow" "" to suppress the legend entry, but predictably enough all i got was an arrow with no label! (see the somewhat modified legend attached) 2 New area legend entries don't want to change ---------------------------------------- I tried to modify the new 'area flowstone' and 'area moonmilk' legend entries, but I get an error. There must be something different about them. eg text en "line wall:clay" "clay, mud" text en "area clay" "clay, mud" #text en "area flowstone" "flowstone" #text en "area moonmilk" "moonmilk" text en "point gradient" "gradient/slope" If I remove the #'s I get an error. My mistake or is there really something different about the new entries? 3 New entrance symbol ---------------------------------------- I'd like to change the entrance symbol from a filled triangle to, say, an omega symbol (as is already used for station with flag entrance). Has anyone come up with some metapost for this? Or another way of doing it? 4 Survey station with specific flags in legend ---------------------------------------- I notice that the legend is set up to display and differentiate survey stations with 'mark fixed, 'mark painted' etc but not to differentiate for flags such as entrance, doline, arch etc. Is it possible to include 'flagged' survey stations in the legend? Cheers Bruce

Re: [Therion] vthreshold inefficient
by Giorgio Pannuzzo 22 Nov '11

The last time I checked it, many months ago, I encountered the opposite problem: no way to exclude vtrheshold, even with 90° value. This was a great problem for using old data collected in traditional way (only vertical up-down values). I'm going to check this as soon as possible. Hello everybody, I have just uploaded version 5.3.9, which includes mostly bugfixes. Here is a list of them: - added missing area flowstone and moonmilk into legend - fixed xvi export of extended elevation - fixed symbol-hide/show point remark bug - fixed wall:debris bug in AUT symbol set (thanks to Georg Pacher) - fixed layout color map-bg transparent bug - LRUD area dimensions is drawn for all shots before these shots are drawn (centerline is compact when map is exported from centerline only) - vthreshold should work now for loch LRUD modelling + added option -enable/disable splay-shots to 3d model export S.
