Extended elevation of a vertical cave
by Francois Gaspard 03 Nov '11

03 Nov '11

Hello, I'm working on an extended elevation map of our last explorations in Picos de Europa (Spain). The cave is mainly vertical (~ -300m) with ... too many networks for my liking. I'm using therion 5.3.6. However, two issues are blocking me: 1) Drawings ropes: Is there a mean to draw ropes (a kind of rope line)? I've just found rope points but not lines. Some emails on the list have mentionned this issue but without a clear answer for me. 2) A vertical scalebar: The legend is pretty nice, but the scalebar is horizontal. I was not able to fnd a way to draw a nice vertical scale bar on the map. Many thanks if someone can help. François SCOF - http://scof91.free.fr/

Is therion data dimensions like survex *data passage
by Bruce 03 Nov '11

03 Nov '11

Stacho You are so accommodating! Based on my reading of the Survex manual it would seem that Therion already has a superior means of defining arbitrary tubes - simply by drawing passage outlines. So unless it is a trivial exercise don't do it just on my account. My vote for your valuable development time would be to bias it towards improving Therions information reporting in; -list outputs -map and atlas headers And refining 'map object' management for map and atlas pdf outputs related to; -bug fixes -generally improving the 'single data to many outputs' paradigm. These are the areas where I find Therion most limiting when it comes to managing a larger project. On the other hand it might just be my imagination that is the limiting factor. But I was thinking of it for some time already. I will try to implement it. Thanks, S.

ignoreall before newline does not seem to work
by Andrew Atkinson 02 Nov '11

Hello I am trying to do this data data normal station left right up down ignoreall newline tape compass clino P2D1 1 0.4 0 0.37 Top of sump pool b 3.88 122.0 -3.0 P2D2 0.2 1 0.2 0.4 Left side passage just above bolt F 5.64 289.0 -3.0 P2D3 0.7 0.6 0 0.43 Roof pendant but it tells me that I do not have enogh readings for type in On the survex documentation it uses this, which should work, just ignoreing the LRUD but same result data normal station ignoreall newline tape compass clino A bit of playing around and I find this works (but I don't really want to go through and add quotes for all my comments) data normal station left right up down ignore newline tape compass P2D1 1 0.4 0 0.37 "Top of sump pool" b 3.88 122.0 -3.0 P2D2 0.2 1 0.2 0.4 "Left side passage just above bolt" F 5.64 289.0 -3.0 P2D3 0.7 0.6 0 0.43 "Roof pendant" So it looks like ignoreall before a new line does not work in therion, it is shown in survex documentation, and works in survex

Is therion data dimensions like survex *data passage
by Bruce 02 Nov '11

Thought I'd actually read the survey manual (at long last). Is Therion's 'data dimensions' data input style intended to have the same as effect as Survex's '*data passage' input style? Ie Allow arbitrary definition of 3d passage tubes between survey stations regardless to the survey centreline route between stations. If so it adds some possibilities I hadn't thought of. However Therion's ability to use plan drawing outlines to define 3d passage tubes might supersede them. Still, it would be good to know the possibilites. Bruce

FW: How to draw flooded passages
by Bruce 01 Nov '11

01 Nov '11

Maximillian I got a little bit interested in your inquiry as shown in the attached therion dataset. The pdf files show the results of changing various parameters. This is a bit rambling and perhaps lacks direction, but maybe it is of use to someone. The transparency or otherwise of particular entities depends on; -mainly the symbol definition (does it have an opaque background written into the definition?), -then the transparency and opacity settings used in the layout, -placement (top, bottom) and order in which it is drawn in the individual scraps, -and probably some other things I haven't thought of. The first symbols drawn tend to be placed at the bottom. As you draw each symbol tends to overlie the ones previously drawn. If you look at the th2 file with a text editor you will see that as you draw, each item is entered before the previous item; so as with map definitions, the first entities in the file are on top of the ones further down. If you check in the therion book "How the map is put together" you will see that it is really more complicated than this and that therion anticipates that some types of entities are usually above other types regardless of their placement in the file. You can modify this a little by using -place top or -place bottom on a case by case basis. In practice I find that if you are fussy, fine adjustment takes a lot of experimentation. Still, in general I think it is a good idea to draw things at the bottom first (the sump area fill) and things near the top last (the water fill - which is how an airbell will look). I have experimented with two ways of drawing area water over area sump (near stations B6 & B7). The area associated with border id l26-543-625 made me think that enabling line border to have -outline [out in none] (similar to walls) would make definitions of areas (associated those borders) with holes in them easier to draw. Low priority as there is a workable but slightly more complicated alternative for the draughtsperson as in the attached. I always use purpose drawn line border as a boundary for fills, as this minimises problems with areas becoming disassociated from there borders if lines are split in two during subsequent edits. border # I tend to use this to define area water border:invisible # I tend to use this to define area sump Which brings me to a question. Why are some borders to water areas in my example thick & some thin? The borders near B5, B6, B7 & B8 should all be the same, but B6 is thinner? This sort of thing in the past has been due to bugs in the symbol definitions in metapost. Only thing is that it is happening with both the default symbols and with my custom symbols, so to me that points to a problem with my drawing of the scraps - cannot find it though! How to draw flooded passages
by Maximillian Dornseif 30 Oct '11

Please ignore my ignorance. I'm trying to draw cave passage which are mainly flooded but have a few places where you can surface due to air filed domes. See http://static.23.nu/md/Pictures/ZZ6E08C628.png - the orange parts are the ones where we can breathe air. How do I draw something like this? Two layers, or an area where we can surface? If so which kind of area is preferred? Regards Maximillian Dornseif

[PATCH] Therion 5.3.8 on MacOS X 10.7.2
by Maximillian Dornseif 28 Oct '11

28 Oct '11

To make Therion 5.3.8 compile on current MacOS X I had to modify the makefiles slightly. It would be nice if you could integrate the patch into the mainline. The patch is attached or available at https://github.com/mdornseif/therion/commit/9bf3e30b9c832b71492919f776fe323… Best Regards Maximillian Dornseif

Easy toggle for offset maps
by Bruce 24 Oct '11

24 Oct '11

One of my 'to do' list projects has been to figure out a was of organising map objects so that it is easy to create map and atlas outputs either with or without map offsets. I want to use the same map definitions in both cases to avoid lots of duplication = lots more room for error. Why? Because multilevel cave maps at say 1:200 to 1:2000 scales are more useful/legible with offsets, and at say 1:5000 to 1:10000 are more useful without offsets (eg locality maps with offsets built in are misleading). Atlas outputs, I have decided, should never have offsets, because the whole point of a multilevel (multi-chapter?) atlas is to show the passage in it's true relationship and the offsets seem to scramble the chapter structure (or I have been doing something wrong). The strategy I was thinking of was finding a cunning map object structure that allowed a fairly easy toggle between the two options, but my loose conclusion is that for a complicated multilayer cave it will usually involve the commenting and uncomenting of many lines of map definitions, possibly in a number of locations, and some layout data block changes. This makes it difficult if you have not used that particular dataset for a while. An example of the sort of thing that is required is changing; PR-PigletsJiltedPlan@MiddleEarth [0 100 m] above to; PR-PigletsJiltedPlan@MiddleEarth # [0 100 m] above A much simpler concept would be to have a simple layout command like; Ignore offsets that might be valid for both map outputs and atlas outputs. ie, if 'ignore offsets' is processed anywhere in the thconfig scope, then no offsets are produced. If it is not, then the offsets are produced as defined. Simple (for the users) - only one character change (#) in one place. Is this concept already implemented and I have not managed to find it? Or if not, could it be implemented (easily)? Bruce

map header - north sout range
by Christian 24 Oct '11

24 Oct '11

Hi, i use the tex /legendcontent to format my map headers. There i need especially three length informations. Cavedepth, Cavelength and Horizontallength. The first two are directly inside the header. But not the Horizontallength (North-South or East-West range). Is it possible to include it in the header? Heres what i think about: \edef\tmp{\the\CAVEHORIZONTALDEPTH} \ifx\tmp\empty \else {\size[14]\the\CAVEHORIZONTALDEPTHtitle: \ss\the\CAVEHORIZONTALDEPTH\par} \fi Thank you in advance! Problem with diving data
by Xavier Robert 20 Oct '11

20 Oct '11

Hi all, I am currently trying to draw a map with diving data. But she I compile, I receive a metapost error. This probably because of the structure of my data, but even after reading The THbook and the Survex tutorial, I do not understand where/why. Can someone give me any advise ? I attach to this emai a zip file that contain : - a simple part of my diving data, with its thconfig file - The associated log file. Thanks a lot !
