Survey of a levelled maze
by Andrew Atkinson 11 Jul '15

11 Jul '15

Hi all In sort of a follow up to my previous mail, I am trying to draw a plan (and elevation, soon) of a cave that is on many overlapping levels that are at about 40 degrees and obscure each other. One idea was to be able to draw each of the 4 levels with the other levels shown as previews, then have all 4 displaced from each other, so that the viewer could see how it fit together in context for this I tried map ReadsM Reads1M Reads2M [0 25 m] none Reads3M [0 50 m] none Reads4M [0 75 m] none endmap map Reads1M Level1M #[0 25 m] none preview below Level2M preview above Level3M preview above Level4M endmap map Reads2M preview below Level1M Level2M preview above Level3M preview above Level4M endmap map Reads3M preview below Level1M preview below Level2M Level3M preview above Level4M endmap map Reads4M preview below Level1M preview below Level2M preview below Level3M Level4M endmap But when the Reads2M, Reads3M and Reads4M maps are offset the previews are not shown The above is my preferred option, so getting that working would be best, but another option is just to offset all the maps leaving only the previews map ReadsM Level1M [0 25 m] below Level2M [0 50 m] below Level3M [0 75 m] below Level4M [0 100 m] below endmap Which sort of works, but the previews fall off the page, and to get colour by map to work I need to select ReadsM -map-level 1 but then the previews are not shown, what am I doing wrong, how do I get the colours and the previews, help! Even better would be to get the previews the same colour as the maps, but that is probably not a function at the moment colour preview-below map would be a good option, that As a note; it turns out that [0 25 m] is in North/south and East/West direction not X Y of the page, which I can overcome with a bit of maths, but as this seems to be more of a page laying tool I would expect the latter. thanks Andrew

Previews clipped by page boundarys
by Andrew Atkinson 11 Jul '15

11 Jul '15

Hi all In a map when using preview above/below MAP_Ref Is there a way to make sure that the preview part does not fall off (clipped) the page. I can fiddle it by adding extra stuff, legends etc, to make the page bigger, but it would be better if there was an option for this to be done automatically? thanks Andrew

Making potractors
by Wookey 24 Jun '15

24 Jun '15

What is the best way to make therion potractors? Years ago Martin S sent me some really nice robust ones. Ones I have tried to make since (by printing onto acetate and laminating the result) do not work well because my laminating sheets only stick to themselves, not the protractor material, so it opens up at the baseline and delaminates. Is it possible to print on one side of a laminating sheet then put two sheets through the laminator to encapsulate, or will my laminating sheet just melt in the laser printer? Maybe that could be done, but printed in a (cold) inkjet printer, so long as no water ever got in? There is also the matter of the correct 'floppiness/stiffness'. MartinS were nice and stiff (but robust). Laminator/acetate ones are rather floppy. So, how does everyone else do it? Also http://therion.speleo.sk/protractor/index.php only links to a 1:200 protractor. It would be useful to keep others available there and save people editing the metafont. Ah-ha - turns out that we have 1:250 and 1:500 versions carefully preserved on the CUCC site! http://expo.survex.com/templates/therion1_250.pdf http://expo.survex.com/templates/therion1_500.pdf And there are some US-units ones online. Collecting them would be a useful little task. Wookey -- Principal hats: Linaro, Debian, Wookware, ARM http://wookware.org/

MetaPost include relative path
by Henry Bennett 16 Jun '15

16 Jun '15

Hi, Whats the syntax for including code from a sub directory in MetaPost? My project has a subdirectory of code snippets in {doc root}\code The MetaPost input command works great when I reference the entire directory location eg (input "c:\users\henry\documents\survey\cave\code\filename") but won't accept any form of relative address that I can see. Doesn't make it very portable. Any ideas Thanks Henry

Turned through Angle Survey
by Graham Mullan 10 Jun '15

10 Jun '15

Martin I think Andrew is referring to a Total Station survey, though I presume that data from an old fashioned theodolite would look much the same. What he needs, I guess, is an automatic way of correcting (calibrating?) the horizontal angles with regard to North when the traverse is connected in to fixed points at either end. Graham

Turn through angle data format
by Andrew Atkinson 10 Jun '15

10 Jun '15

May I add this to the wish list. every few years I get data in a land survey format, which often does not use a magnetic survey but a turned through angle (does it have a proper name?) I guess it is not that easy, otherwise this sort of think usually gets done. Readings from two stations look something like this. OBSERVATIONS ------------ LOCATION : Wookey JOB NO : 164 DATE SURVEYED: 19 MAY 2015 16: FILE : TI16401 SURVEYOR : D Factors: EDITED STN : 1 H.I. 1.410 PNT HA VA SDIST TGT CODE DIMS REMARKS 1 0.0000 90.1539 59.621 1.510 SS00000N ~ #SS 2# 2 217.5531 73.4609 16.824 1.655 SS00000N ~ #SS 3# 3 359.5958 90.1545 59.621 1.510 SS00000N ~ #SS 2# 4 217.5524 73.4617 16.825 1.655 SL00000A ~ ~ 5 359.5959 90.1538 59.621 1.510 SS00000N ~ #SS 2# OBSERVATIONS ------------ LOCATION : Wookey JOB NO : 164 DATE SURVEYED: 26 MAY 2015 20: FILE : TI16403 SURVEYOR : D Factors: EDITED STN : 2 H.I. 1.420 PNT HA VA SDIST TGT CODE DIMS REMARKS 12 0.0000 94.1903 14.233 1.400 SS00000N ~ #SS 2A# 13 355.2701 89.3842 59.615 1.420 SS00000N ~ #SS 1# 14 0.0004 94.1754 14.233 1.420 SS00000N ~ #SS 2A# I think this is how they come out of the machine, but cannot be certain. So the first set of observations are all from station 1 (well technically 1.410 above station) so the first line of that set is a reading to ss 2 or station 2, which has been set at 0 and ss 3 is 217 degrees from that reading (No relation to North.) Obviously this type of data cannot be used without 2 statoins of know possition somewhere on the traverse. We have 2 ends of magnetic survey to connect this survey too. Anyway it would be great to get this data into therion/survex, the tunnellers of Wookey really need it, 15m in and they are not sure what direction to go..... Slight formating problem that might also be nice to solve, although it is messy, and not to be encouraged is that 217.5531 means 217 degrees, 55 munites 31 seconds thanks Andrew

Trapped in Therion on Error
by Adam Sampson 05 Jun '15

05 Jun '15

As I'm learning I occasionally have errors in my .th2 file. When I open a file with a problem in the therion editor it gives me an error, an error that prevents me from editing the file or from closing the program! And this is for a file that actually compiles (with warnings) as long as I don't open it in the editor. Since I can't edit the file in the editor I'm using trial and error to clear it up in a text editor. But it's a pain to do trial and error when I get stuck with a non-responsive program each time I have an error. Is there a way to make it so that I can at least close the program on error? I'm on Windows and in order to close the program I have to open task manager and click "End Task" several times before Windows realizes it has to help me close the program the hard way. Re: [Therion] From Chris Milne a bit of advice re survey files
by Andrew Atkinson 02 Jun '15

02 Jun '15

Chris I have copied in the Therion list as I do not know much (anything) about OSX. So the 3d file was probably produced by therion, but is a survex format, from our brief conversation, I believe you now have survex installed, which gives you aven to view the 3d. As for Therion instal, this will install loch which allows the viewing of loc files, which can have 3d passage shape, surface overlays and the like, hopefully someone else can help you with the install, I think there is, or someone is working on a package Andrew On 25/05/15 20:56, Chris Milne wrote: > Hi Andrew hope your well. Therion doesn't appear to be so straightforward to install on OSX. Alternatively is there a converter to a different file format ie PDF. > > Chris Milne > Photographic Tutor > Tel 01454 416937 > Mob 07920 116492 > Facebook Chris Milne > Sent from my Ipad >

Converting .lox files?
by Adam Sampson 01 Jun '15

01 Jun '15

I've been trying to find a way to covert a .lox file to a format that can be used by additional viewers. In particular I'd like to be able to put my model up on sketchfab (which accepts .ply or .obj files). I've tried exporting my file to a .vtk file using the loch viewer, but this seems to remove the color coding for elevation. Does anyone have a tip/trick to export to vtk or other format while retaining the color coding? Adam Sampson(502)509-5066caver.adam@outlook.comwww.kentuckykarstconservancy.com

Missing explored length in survey-list statistics
by Bruce 01 Jun '15

01 Jun '15

Oops, I got distracted as I was writing this, and reported it incorrectly. So The continuation-lists are reported correctly. It is the survey-list that is reported incorrectly. As you can see below, the explored length 50m total is not supported by the values below it. The 10m is recorded in a centerline as described in my first message. However there are plan and extended scraps that have 'point continuations' with explored lengths which are included in the total for the cave, but not recorded against the survey. My recollection is that continuations in scraps used to be recorded against the survey. As in the image below, The continuation-list is still reporting scrap continuations against the survey and station (The location of the continuation point can be seen in the 'ref' column on the right). Thanks Bruce _____ From: Bruce [mailto:bruce@tomo.co.nz] Sent: Monday, 1 June 2015 10:38 a.m. To: 'List for Therion users' Subject: Missing explored length in continuation-list statistics Just studying an output from a recent project, and I noticed that 'explored' lengths in scraps recorded against 'point continuations' are not reported properly in continuation-list survey-list html exports. (I have only tested html, plan and extended scraps in Therion 5.3.16) 'Explored' lengths in centrelines recorded against stations with flag continuation are reported however. A bug perhaps? Or a quirk of my project? Bruce
