"\legendbox" "\loadpicture" and absolute paths
by rowena 14 Mar '21

Hello, I am using the "\loadpicture" capability in "\legendbox" constructs to include map sections, elevations, etc. It all works nicely on my PC where I am using relative paths to the pdf files. My club has a desire to archive the map data for posterity - ie if my pc dies or I go walkabout, the map data should still be available so that others can add to the maps as they are extended. I would prefer to have the images included using relative pathnames, rather than absolute pathnames, so that future explorers can download the map data and extend it, without having to duplicate my file hierarchy. How can I include relative paths in the \loadpicture functionality? Thanks, Rowena

Scale dependant error when using area fills
by Tom Foord 20 Jan '19

Hi all I'm having some problems compiling a project which includes debris area fills. Depending on the exact symbol fill that I use, I am getting strange scale-dependant errors which seem to cause the compiler to loop endlessly until I force it to stop. I originally noticed the problem when using a custom area fill that I made by modifying the standard a_debris_AUT symbol fill. I've attached my modified metapost definition in the attached text file 'a_debris_WUG.txt'. The error occurs for any scale between 1:2000 and 1:4483 (outside of this range the project compiles fine). See attached output log 'Output log - a_debris_WUG.txt'. As you can see, the file seems to loop over and over again. Initially I thought this problem was specific to my custom fill, but then I noticed that I also get a similar error when using the standard a_debris_AUT fill, however this time the error only occurs when the scale is set to exactly 1:2000 (any other scale seems to be fine). See attached output log 'Output log - a_debris_AUT.txt'. Can anyone help with this problem? Thanks Tom

Therion 5.4.1 Windows Installer incomplete installs
by Bruce Mutton 16 Oct '17

Things are getting weirder. Usually I have just installed one version of Therion over top of whatever version I have installed, but wonder if this might be contributing to issues I have here. After I have installed 5.4.1 over top of 5.4.0. If I open a thconfig file, with Help About I get 5.4.1 reported, as below If I then open a .th2 drawing file, I get 5.4.0 reported, as below So with two instances of XTherion open at the same time, each is reporting a different version. Same thing happens installing 5.4.1 88c8a06 over top of 5.4.1. The drawing editor still reports 5.4.0 Perhaps a harmless bug/omission or something odd with the installer? Initial drawing suggests the drawing editor is behaving like 5.4.1 (triangular survey stations). Bruce From: Therion [mailto:therion-bounces@speleo.sk] On Behalf Of Bruce Mutton via Therion Sent: Monday, 29 May 2017 9:44 AM To: 'List for Therion users' <therion(a)speleo.sk> Cc: Bruce Mutton <bruce(a)tomo.co.nz> Subject: [Therion] Therion 5.4.1 Windows crash if survex loop-closure I've just started catching up on a drawing project since 5.4.1 has been released. A while back I reported problems with beta versions of Therion related to 'loop-closure survex'. They were fixed in 5.4.0 Now using 5.4.1 those projects/thconfigs that crashed before now seem to be OK, but I have now found another project/thconfig that crashes with 5.4.1 but not with 5.4.0 5.4.1 runs OK with 'loop-closure therion' but gets killed by Windows 10 when I use 'loop-closure survex'. Am still using survex 1.2.27. I have attached the log file with 'loop-closure survex'. Not sure if it is related, but I notice that if I install 5.4.1 'Install Only for Me' it will not overwrite a previously installed 5.4.0, even though the installer does not report any errors or problems to the user. Ie it fails even though it looks like it has worked just fine. To get 5.4.1 to overwrite 5.4.0 I need to "Install for all users". Bruce

Therion] Therion 5.4.1 Windows Installer incomplete installs
by Bruce Mutton 16 Oct '17

Just following up on what I think is a serious problem with the 5.4.0 and 5.4.1 Windows Installers (as described below). I think the Windows installers should be taken offline until they can cleanly install in all likely situations. Either that all provide explicit information on the download page as to the limitations and how to fix the problems the installers are likely to cause. Bruce From: Therion [mailto:therion-bounces@speleo.sk] On Behalf Of Bruce Mutton via Therion Sent: Tuesday, 30 May 2017 8:48 PM To: 'List for Therion users' <therion(a)speleo.sk> Cc: Bruce Mutton <bruce(a)tomo.co.nz> Subject: Re: [Therion] Therion 5.4.1 Windows Installer incomplete installs Thanks Vladimir I seem to have got through all that successfully. I will stick to “all users” Therion installs from now on, as that puts the files in a location where I am used to looking for them. If the installer ever handles uninstalls, then the .ini files should be preserved. The former requires admin privileges, and the later can be used by a limited user. Older installer versions used Program files by default, and the new files would always overwrite the older ones. But if you had an older version in Program Files, and installed the new one for the current user in his AppData folder, you would end up with two sets of files. And with conflicting file type associations. You could try uninstalling and manually deleting the Therion install folder. Cleaning the registry entries requires using Registry Editor and deleting a set of keys, if you are comfortable doing that. The keys are these (after the text "Subkey". HKLM is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKCU is HKEY_CURRENT_USER) https://github.com/therion/therion-batteries/blob/master/therion.iss#L60-L1… I suppose a better solution would be if I can make the installer uninstall any previous version before installing. This should prevent such an issue. Vladimir On Mon, May 29, 2017 at 1:12 PM, Bruce Mutton via Therion <therion(a)speleo.sk <mailto:therion@speleo.sk> > wrote: Things are getting weirder. Import a scrap into another scrap (or th2-file)
by torstein finnesand 11 Oct '17

Hi fellows, Sometimes I realize that two scraps should have been one (for instance scrap A in A.th2 should have been a part of scrap B in B.th2), in particular when it's difficult to join them. It's easy to insert the xvi file into the scrap B file. But I have to draw it again. Is there any workaround here? Torstein Finnesand Norway

Doubled legend

Andrey I’m interested in what you are trying to do with point 1, probably something I want to turn my mind to in the next few months. Back on 2 July I asked a similar question “Can we invoke multiple tex-map \maplayouts for each exported map output?” but didn’t get any response. Perhaps a stupid question, or self-evidently never going to work. I have not looked at it since. At present I don’t have any answers for you. Perhaps look at Henry’s contribution here, as it seems like he has this aspect under control, https://github.com/speleo/SpeleoPhilippines/blob/master/Region-2/BlueWaterC… and copying from his post earlier this week… Take a look at this https://github.com/speleo/SpeleoPhilippines/blob/master/CodeLibrary/_layout… You’ll then need to inject the code into your thconfig file using the “input” command. https://github.com/speleo/SpeleoPhilippines/blob/master/Region-2/Baggao/thc… Bruce From: Therion [mailto:therion-bounces@speleo.sk] On Behalf Of ?????? ???????? via Therion Sent: Wednesday, 16 August 2017 7:42 AM To: Therion(a)speleo.sk Cc: андрей коженков <drunews(a)mail.ru> Subject: [Therion] Doubled legend and cyrillic in metapost Dear Therion users, I've got few issues with map header customization using metapost and tex code. 1. I'm sure I've made a mistake here but after few days of messing with the code result is still the same. <snipped> -- Thanks Andrey

Hello Theron community / need help for Therion install
by franck TUOT 31 Aug '17

Hi, I live in Vancouver Island, Caving there for two years now. We have some interesting project going on here. I tried to install Therion on my mac few days ago. It seems like the final installation doesn’t work for me. I’ve followed all the steps on your website (that’s great by the way). Since I’m not a genius in computer, my competence to play in the terminal and write code are limited. I tried few option with a friend but he finally suggest me to contact you. My only problem is the last command : to launch Therion or Xtherion. my computer can’t find that file and I can’t find it neither in my therion folder. I will join to this e-mail a copy of my terminal use during the installation. Maybe you can help me to solve it, this might be a mistake from me during the installation process. Thanks a lot in advance, talk to you soon ! Franck

mud!
by Rob Countess 28 Aug '17

So, Still a therion noob despite having put all my data over. Finally working on cave maps not just line plots, thanks to a caving buddy who is leading the charge. So this seems strange but.... why is there no mud area symbol? I am sure someone else has already addressed this. I cant be the only person to survey in a muddy cave. Surprised really, my floor detail is usually sand, cobbles, mud, water or breakdown. I've never really had to use clay or debris. Can someone help put the mud into my cave maps? It seems like such a common and important floor area, can someone with the expertise make it so that mud just comes up on the drop down area list in map editor? Rob Countess

min-symbol-scale and fonts-setup
by Bruce Mutton 26 Aug '17

26 Aug '17

At long last I thought I'd try out the new font-setup layout syntax and min-symbol-scale. There has been no feedback since it was released so I assumed all must be working perfectly. I have found some issues though. The min-symbol-scale does not seem to hide wall point altitudes. A bug I presume. And there are some new disciplines to drawing, like it you don't make your arrows have the same -scale as the labels they are associated with, things look a bit odd with some min-symbol-scale combinations. That is OK, just something new to do. However, min-symbol-scale l and min-symbol-scale xl both tend to hide the cave walls, which naturally enough have -scale m by default I suppose. This is problematic, as it tends to hide the very essence of the cave map that one wants to emphasize by hiding the smaller symbols! It just leaves behind areas, map-connections, and xl symbols and text. I am hoping to get to the point where I can hide all text except that which is larger than -scale xl. ie I'd like to use something like min-symbol-scale xl to hide most text and symbols, and fonts-setup to set the size of xl to 0. Then I am hoping that any text that has a -scale (number) that happens to be greater than the size of xl will continue to be displayed. Useful for applying labels to the likes of overview maps, say at 1:5000. Liberal usage of symbol-hide as well. I abandoned trying this just now due to the problem with displaying walls. fonts-setup works similar to the old original code metapost fonts_setup(6,8,10,12,16); but seems to have too many checks and limitations. They both have the problem that you cannot set the font size to zero (you get error code 3). Setting the metapost font size to 0.01 works, but you do get messy dots and extra file size, as the text is still in the pdf. fonts-setup layout does not like having font sizes out of order (each must be larger than the next) and if not it crashes. I would prefer a warning, as I can imagine uses where one might want to hide the largest text only, or to have some -scales equal. fonts-setup also complains if the size for xs is 0.01 I wonder if fonts-setup could include some coding trick to allow a font size of zero to remove the text from the output? And allow more flexibility in fonts-setup usage? I am using 5.4.1 + 88c8a06 Bruce
