Therion's Loch features (incognito) on NZ TV
by Bruce 19 Oct '15

19 Oct '15

Loch model of 39 km cave features in this TV news clip at 3:47 (Me carrying two packs on the opening still, and stuck at 2:00) http://www.3news.co.nz/Deepest-cave-discovered-in-our-backyard/tabid/817/art icleID/330973/Default.aspx Centreline data has been processed for the last few(?) decades with a home-made unix application that uses proprietary routines, so will only live while Jonathan is with his current employer. As you might have guessed, an 'export to Therion' routine is being worked on. Bruce

Compiling Therion projects from Notepad++
by Footleg 08 Jan '15

I find having multiple thconfig files open so I can compile different parts of my large cave system project very useful. So I was investgating how to run Therion from Notepad++ (my preferred text editor). This is how I got it working: I wrote a 2 line batch file containing these commands: cd %1 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Therion\therion.exe" %2 Saved to somewhere on disk, and then call it from Notepad++ using the Run command, as follows: On the Run menu in Notepad++, Select the 'Run' item, and enter the command as follows: "C:\Personal\Caving\Therion\compileTherion.bat" "$(CURRENT_DIRECTORY)" "$(FILE_NAME)" (But using the path to where you saved your batch file). Save the command (I called it 'Compile Therion' and gave it the shortcut CTRL+T). Now with any thconfig file open in a tab in Notepad++, I can compile that project by pressing CTRL+T, or by selecting 'Compile Therion' from the Run menu. You can create multiple thconfig files in the same folder on Windows, by giving them any filename you want with the extension .thc or give them no extension at all. That way all the files will be listed in the 'Open File' dialog from the compile tab in xTherion. Next I'll see if I can get my batch file to open the output PDF automatically in Foxit Reader :) But that will be less general because I need to pick a PDF filename which can vary between my thconfig files. wxWidgets 3.0.0
by Olly Betts 14 Jun '14

I've been fighting to get loch to work with wxWidgets 3.0.0. The first obstacle is that they now enable __WXDEBUG__ mode by default, so misuses of the API result in warning dialogs popping up. I've attached a patch which fixes that, and updates a couple of places where deprecated methods are used. This doesn't get you a fully working loch though - starting loch and loading a file seems to work OK, *if* loch was compiled with optimisation. Starting loch with a file specified on the command line segfaults in the first call to gluScaleImage() in lxData.cxx, though it works when run under gdb or valgrind, so I guess there is a subtle timing issue (and that this might not happen on all machines). There are also more uses of deprecated methods, most notably using an implicit wxGLContext is now deprecated. I tried to update that one, but things seemed to crash a lot - I suspect the underlying problem noted above needs addressing first. I've been testing on Debian unstable (which has packages of wx 3.0.0). Cheers, Olly

Error on large file due to scale
by John Stevens 27 Apr '14

I have been compiling a file at various scales. At 1:1250 it compiles but at 1:2500 it goes into a loop and doesn’t finish The only difference other than the scale is a change in font size, to try and remove the small fonts [Warning: text scaled down to fit the path in scrap stpaulsps6(a)stpauls.summerti me.agenallwedd] [1259] [1260] [1261] [1262] [1263] ! Re: [Therion] Drawing tiled floor

Try this as a starting point. You should be able to introduce some randomization and rounded corners. def a_tiless (expr p) = T:=identity; pickup PenC; path q, qq; q = bbox p; picture tmp_pic; uu := max(u, (xpart urcorner q - xpart llcorner q)/100, (ypart urcorner q - ypart llcorner q)/100); tmp_pic := image( for i = xpart llcorner q step 2uu until xpart urcorner q: for j = ypart llcorner q step 2uu until ypart urcorner q: qq := punked (((-.5uu,-.5uu)--(.5uu,-.5uu)--(.5uu,.5uu)--(-.5uu,.5uu)--cycle) ) shifted ((.6i,.6j) ); if xpart (p intersectiontimes qq) < 0: thclean qq; thdraw qq; fi; endfor; endfor; ); clip tmp_pic to p; drawoptions(); draw tmp_pic; enddef; Dave Clucas daveclucas.com mycaves.org. daveclucas(a)icloud.com

Drawing tiled floor
by Roger Schuster 17 Apr '14

Hello cavers, at the moment I try to draw a map of an man-made cavern. The floor of this subterranean building is tiled with more or less rectangular stone plates. These plates are approx. 50 cm wide and rectangular to the passage walls. The tiles are sometimes broken, have rounded corners, not exact the same size and other kinds of "randomness". I tried to write some metapost code to draw this kind of area fill but to no avail. Can somebody please give me a hint how to get this done? The result should look like on the attached photo. Thank you and regards, Roger

New release of Cave Converter
by Footleg 13 Apr '14

13 Apr '14

A new version (20140412) of my Cave Converter tool is now available. It converts between various cave survey file formats. Enables users of DistoX devices to get their existing data into PocketTopo, and their new survey data out of PocketTopo and into Survex format. Plus enables migrating survey data from one program to another. Help and the download link can be found on the Cave Converter home page. Source code is available under a GNU GPLv3 license. http://wscc.darkgem.com/caveconverter/ A summary of the changes in this release: - Adopted JScience.org libraries for handling measurements, and implemented length measurements as unitised lengths rather than plain decimal values. - Added support for reading Compass format survey data files. - Added substitution of illegal characters in series and station names to Survex format output. Compass files allow various punctuation characters in series and station names, which are not allowed in Survex format data files. These will be substituted by an underscore character followed by a two letter code indicating the character which was substituted (e.g. '!' becomes '_ex'). - Added additional command line options: - splays/nosplays: Survex writer and Toporobot writer now have option to not output splays. - lrud: Option to generate LRUD data from splays (can be used on any conversion). - Added rounding of LRUD values to 2 decimal places in the Survex file writer. - Changed LRUD generation to better select the best splay for each dimension, and to calculate the distance for the LRUD dimensions based on the angle of the splay to the passage direction instead of using the total length of the splay. The splay selected when there is a choice is now the splay giving the biggest dimension in the direction of the LRUD measurement rather than using the splay closest to the compass bearing of the passage dimension measurement direction. Passage direction is now calculated from the average bearing of the forward leg and the previous leg arriving at the station. When more than two legs join at a station then the previous leg will be the one with the closest bearing to the bearing of the onward leg. - Splays fired as back shots are now excluded from LRUD generation. - Splays are no longer removed from the output when used to generate LRUD dimensions. - The Survex writer now groups passage data from LRUD dimensions into blocks of readings corresponding to the survey legs in the file (previously one block of passage data was output per series with all stations listed with no respect for their connectivity). - Added duplicate and surface flags to leg class, and added reading of flags to Survex parser and writing them to Survex writer. - Made the logging output less verbose, and fixed the survey summary details log output to include inner series. Bugs fixed: - Fixed case sensitivity bug in Toborobot file generation which left series unlinked if series or station names did not have identical case. - Fixed bug in PocketTopo parser which repeated the station name given to the 'to' station for a splay leg when the splays were not all located together in the survey. - Fixed bug where compass calibration was used instead of declination calibration in PocketTopo parser, Survex parser and Survex writer. - Added date reading to Survex parser. - Fixed bug in utility function to calculate the average of a set of compass bearings (thanks to Peter Kellaway for pointing me to a much more robust and elegant solution). This bug does not affect the use of the function in previous versions (where it was only used to convert PocketTopo triple leg readings into one average leg) but it did show up in the new LRUD generation code when calculating the average bearing of two legs either side of a station when the passage went round a sharp bend. - Fixed bug in Toporobot Writer which caused passage dimensions data to be output on the wrong station (LRUD values for the 'from' station of each leg were being put on the 'to' station of each leg). - PocketTopo file reader no longer reorders the splay legs for each station (something which used to happen due to the old code which sorted splays into groups for L,R,U,D measurements in this reader). Bug reports and requests to support other formats always welcomed. Enjoy! Footleg
