Hello, has anyone a list of PDA mobiles, which are able to work PocketTopo? I have an ASUS MyPal 696 with Win mobile 6.0. On this device PocketTopo is working. On another device HP AXIM with Win CE 3.0 it is not working. Thank you Regards Markus
I think PocketTopo requires Windows Mobile 5 or later. The most popular choice among UK cavers is the Dell Axim X51v. The 'v' on the end of the model name is important, as it means is has a 640x480 resolution screen which makes a big difference. the X51 only has 320x240. These are easy to find on eBay for not much money. I have seen people using Fujitsu ruggedised PDAs and HP PDAs too. The HPs seem to more often have issues with the bluetooth connection dropping. Apart from the screen resolution, the other great feature of the Dells is the replaceable battery. So you can buy larger batteries which can run them for around 24 hours continuous use. To put .net on a pda, the ones I have used are all .cab files. They are difficult to find on the web, so I have a copy here http://www.ubss.org.uk/__Files/DotNet_cabs.zip (Set up for the paperless surveying course the csg run) 7 different version in there, they are the ones you put onto the pda (sd card) and run on the pda. No protective case required, just insulation tape and duct tape over the exposed ports, and a closed-cell foam wrap for transportation. We did manage to permanently drown the Recon in a swimming passage though.
