Invalid length reading error reported due to (valid) scrap definition
by Bruce Mutton 16 Aug '23

Hello I have a perplexing error, this time around after a complicated git merge, and I have had similar on one occasion a while back. I think I resolved by omitting the file, which is not really a resolution. This time I need a better solution! On compiling a thconfig I get an error: C:\Program Files (x86)\Therion\therion.exe: error -- 11-DeerPlan.th2 [8] -- invalid length reading -- -projection The start of file 11-DeerPlan.th2 is like this: encoding utf-8 ##XTHERION## xth_me_area_adjust -160.83 -127.28 965.01 763.65 ##XTHERION## xth_me_area_zoom_to 200 ##XTHERION## xth_me_image_insert {502.386220472 1 1.0} {626.342677165 11.8} ptopoDeer/11-Deer_p.xvi 0 {} scrap 11-DeerPlan-s1 -projection plan -station-names []@11 -author 2023.02.26 "B Mutton" -copyright 2023 NZSS -scale [0 0 787.4 787.4 0 0 10 10 m] point 10.25 711.5 label -text "Deer Pot" -align l -scale xl point 186.25 712.5 anchor -align r This is a well established scrap in a well established file in a well established project and both of the parent branches compiled without issue through many editing and versioning iterations. Comparison with both of the parent git branches do not suggest any changes that should trigger such an error - at least I have not found it yet. I have checked this file and all calling it for closed blocks (scrap endscrap, map endmap, centreline endcentreline, survey end survey etc) because long ago Therion used to complain in a similar manner if such blocks were not closed (reporting survey data type error due to a drawing file error - illogical). Since this is the second time in a month I've experienced this type of 'illogical' error after nothing like it for years, I'm wondering if anyone else has, or has a clue as to what might be happening? No problemo, glad it was so easy to solve :) On 15/08/2023 21:33, Torsten Schnitter wrote: > Hi Tarquin > Thanks a lot for your advices! > It was not a wrong station point but missing ones. > I did not have all stations within the drawing but only some. > And therefore not all surveys did have stations marked in the drawing. > With "debug on" the distortion was very obvious. > Now that I have inserted all stations ... tadaaa ... everything shows up as expected. > THANK YOU! > regards, Torsten >

Sorry, I accidentally sent this direct instead of to the list. Copied below to save anyone else having to send replies. This solved the issue. Problem with Depth
by Torsten Schnitter 15 Aug '23

15 Aug '23

Hi all I have a problem (again) with water depth in the map (elevated view). Exporting the xvi file it looks all good and all points are at the expected depth. (as the grid in xtherion should be 1m per square) This point in the following picture is around 1.2km inside the cave and is at a water depth of 29m: So counting grid squares the line is at a waterdepth of 29m (as it should be). These points are 29 squares down related to the start point at the beginning of the cave and at a depth of 0m. In the map export I use a grid output for a depth line every 10m. grid-size 1000 1000 10 m grid-origin 0 0 100 m So the grid is with one line exactly at 0m water depth at the start of the cave: But at a point of around 1.2km inside the cave (which is the part of the xvi shown above) the cave is not at the right level: The real depth at this point is 29m and not around 35m as drawn on the map. There is only one GPS point at the start of the cave and no loops (and therefore no loop closures). Why is the map morphed somehow or changed in any other way with a difference in depth over distance? Does anyone have a hint what's going on and what is wrong? Any help is welcome. Thanks, Torsten

Re: [Therion] Big room multiple scraps - How to join
by alastair gott 05 Aug '23

HI Bill, Something along the lines of map ProblemchamberMP GrandcanyonSP FlatroomSP endmap select Problemchamber export map -proj plan -o Problemchamber.th2 Instead of exporting to pdf, this will then export this to a .th2 file, where I guess it will appear with all the lines you have joined, instead of you having to join them with line joins/scrap joins or amending line end positions to force therion to automatically recognise them. This will allow you to work on the whole chamber as one in a single .th2 file. Of course then (more or less) in your master file you will have survey StarkCaverns input problemchamber.th2 input otherpartsofcave.th2 map StarkcavernsMP PromblemchamberMP OtherpartsofcaveMP endmap centreline equate ... endcentreline endsurvey This should hopefully reduce the overlap you are seeing in your current workaround, and it's probably still possible to implement this and delete the invisible walls from the centre of your chamber. It sounds like the idea is to use something like GIMP to collect all of the sketches for the room into one JPG file, then use that file as the background for Therion. True? I considered that idea. There are two problems. First, I know almost nothing about GIMP. It would be a steep learning curve. Second, the sketches are not all the same scale. Some of them would have to be shrunk. Again a GIMP task, and beyond my knowledge of how GIMP works. =============== Bill Gee On 8/2/23 12:16, alastair gott wrote: > Hi bill, > > Could you set up a map for just that chamber which will then join all > the sketches and export the .th2 for it. How to add 1.5 x linefeed to a text string
by Bruce Mutton 04 Aug '23

04 Aug '23

Good evening I'm wondering if there is a way to add a 1.5x linefeed to text strings in Therion? I can make the same effect using the tex parameter \medskip as demonstrated in the Therion \legendcontent routine. But sometimes it would be nice to do it in drawing labels and in strings such as map-comment, were it is not practicable to use tex. As in this example: The text highlighted yellow is a map-comment, like this: map-comment "NZVD2016 / New Zealand Vertical Datum 2016 \ This map represents Deer Pot on the day it was connected to ." . and the vertical 1.5x linefeeds are embedded in the \legendcontent tex. I want to add an extra half space between the two yellow lines. The only way I can think of is a bit of a hack. map-comment "NZVD2016 / New Zealand Vertical Datum 2016 \ <size:40> <size:12>This map represents Deer Pot on the day it was connected to." but it does not work! It seems that a and a 'space' does not render as anything other than the highest character on the line, regardless of the 'size' of the break. Any ideas? Regards Bruce

How to define steps
by Bill Gee 03 Aug '23

03 Aug '23

A mucdh smaller problem than my last one ... Stark Caverns has several places with stairways. I am using the line type "steps" to draw them in. Three issues: 1) One of the stairways is wider than long, and only three steps. When Therion draws that, it places it sideways. Is there a way to tell Therion how to orient the steps? Here is the definition from the th2 file: line steps -close on -attr c 3 1558.0 -1203.5 1593.75 -1206.75 1581.75 -1158.75 1553.75 -1167.0 1558.0 -1203.5 endline This can be seen on the map at https://campercaver.net/MiscFiles/StarkCavernsNoCenter-1.pdf Find the Onyx Circle. There is an arrow calling out a ceiling waterfall. Move west from the arrowhead about 5 scale feet to see this set of steps. There is another stairway very close by which has more steps. That one is oriented correctly. Related question - Is there a way to indicate which end of the stairway is down? 2) I originally defined this stairway using a curved line on one side. When Therion compiled the map it gave an error about "illegal steps definition". The only way I found to fix that was to draw it again using only straight lines. I know Therion can have curved lines in a stairway because there are some others in this map where I did that. Is this a case where Therion requires straight lines for the top and bottom, but can have curved lines for the sides? If so, then changing the orientation as in problem one should fix this. 3) For future versions of Therion - The Therion Book does not have any documentation about the "-attr c #" option for the steps line type. This needs to be added. Also a note about curved vs. straight lines, and how to change orientation. Thanks! -- =============== Bill Gee

Big room multiple scraps - How to join
by Bill Gee 03 Aug '23

03 Aug '23

Hello everyone - I am having a problem getting Therion to understand how to join several scraps to make a large room. The working map is at https://campercaver.net/MiscFiles/StarkCavernsNoCenter.pdf Take a look at the east part of the map in an area called Grand Canyon. This is really one large room, though we did not realize that when we started sketching several years ago. Now I have at least three different pieces of sketch to try and fit together. As you can see, there is a large triangle in the center which Therion thinks is not cave. There are also some part which are outside the cave, but are considered by Therion to be inside. All of the joins in here are using line-to-line. I named the lines, then created "join" statements specifying the two lines and which points on those lines to join. Therion is happy with that, and the wall that it draws is a fair depiction of the area. The problem is that much of the interior is getting lost. I have not tried to use plain joins of the scraps - joins which do not specify the lines. I suspect that would not change much. I have already drawn some of this area three times. It is extraordinarily complicated due to multiple levels, especially along the east side. We thought for a long time that the east side was separate passages, but it is really just a complicated pile of big breakdown blocks. I really REALLY do not want to go back and make one huge sketch of the entire room. That would take several days. What can I do to convince Therion where the cave really is? Can I put in some invisible walls (subtype hidden)? Thanks! -- =============== Bill Gee

Can't change default l_wall style with metapost
by Paul Rowe 25 Jul '23

25 Jul '23

Hi, I have changed wall subtypes before in my layout. e.g. Using Bruce Mutton's code metapost def l_wall_unsurveyed (expr P) = T:=identity; pickup PenC; thdraw P dashed evenly scaled (2*optical_zoom); enddef; endcode However, I can't get this working on the default l_wall type. Any changes, including using the same style as in the above l_wall_unsurveyed example get ignored. e.g. code metapost def l_wall (expr P) = T:=identity; pickup PenC; thdraw P dashed evenly scaled (2*optical_zoom); enddef; endcode I'm not sure what I'm missing. I'm first trying to prove I can override this, and then working on a wall style with a shadow or external cross-hatching. Thanks, Paul
