"\legendbox" "\loadpicture" and absolute paths
by rowena 14 Mar '21

14 Mar '21

Hello, I am using the "\loadpicture" capability in "\legendbox" constructs to include map sections, elevations, etc. It all works nicely on my PC where I am using relative paths to the pdf files. My club has a desire to archive the map data for posterity - ie if my pc dies or I go walkabout, the map data should still be available so that others can add to the maps as they are extended. I would prefer to have the images included using relative pathnames, rather than absolute pathnames, so that future explorers can download the map data and extend it, without having to duplicate my file hierarchy. How can I include relative paths in the \loadpicture functionality? Thanks, Rowena

TerrainTool
by Graham Mullan 28 Jun '19

Mike McCombe's TerrainTool has been fixed and is available again from http://www.ubss.org.uk/terraintool/terraintool.php Download and enjoy. It may not use the latest data but it remains the most straightforward way of adding topographic detail to Therion 3D models. Graham

Scale dependant error when using area fills
by Tom Foord 20 Jan '19

20 Jan '19

Hi all I'm having some problems compiling a project which includes debris area fills. Depending on the exact symbol fill that I use, I am getting strange scale-dependant errors which seem to cause the compiler to loop endlessly until I force it to stop. I originally noticed the problem when using a custom area fill that I made by modifying the standard a_debris_AUT symbol fill. I've attached my modified metapost definition in the attached text file 'a_debris_WUG.txt'. The error occurs for any scale between 1:2000 and 1:4483 (outside of this range the project compiles fine). See attached output log 'Output log - a_debris_WUG.txt'. As you can see, the file seems to loop over and over again. Initially I thought this problem was specific to my custom fill, but then I noticed that I also get a similar error when using the standard a_debris_AUT fill, however this time the error only occurs when the scale is set to exactly 1:2000 (any other scale seems to be fine). See attached output log 'Output log - a_debris_AUT.txt'. Can anyone help with this problem? Thanks Tom

Eurospeleo surveying
by Wookey 01 May '18

01 May '18

Eurospeleo is in Austria this summer (Ebensee). I plan to be there. Some of the rest of you no doubt are too. Does anyone know if there are any surveying meet-ups planned? I think it would be a good idea to arrange a session of some sort just to meet up and find pout what people are doing. Anyone got any enthusiasm for something more comprehensive, like practical survey work, or training or otherwise comparing notes? Maybe reporting on the survey/GIS work in the UK (initial meeting next weekend)? Talk abstracts need to be in by 30th Jan so if you want to give talks say so now. Maybe reporting on the survey/GIS work in the UK (initial meeting next weekend) which I am unfortunately going to miss? If there is nothing already planned, I will register for an 'open session' to be scheduled so surveyors can just compare notes and report what they are doing, as we did informally at Brno. Submap offset issues
by Rodrigo Severo 28 Feb '18

28 Feb '18

Hi, I'm having some problems with submap offsets. I wonder if you can help me figure out what's happening. I attached 3 versions of the same map, each one with one more level. See that in each the is a submap offset with map connection lines indicating the position of the above submap over the lower one. On attached levels 1 and 2 everything is happening exactly as I expected: 1. Level 1 - the m1p submap map connections point to it's place over m3p submap 2. Level 2 - the mAndar1 submap map connections point to it's place over m4p submap The problem exists on level 3: the mAndar1 submap map connections change the submap it's pointing it's connections to: it's not pointing to m4p submap anymore, it's pointing to m5p now. Why? Here are the relevant parts of my th file: map m1p -projection plan Grito_de_Carnaval-1p endmap map m3p -projection plan Grito_de_Carnaval-3p endmap map m4p -projection plan Grito_de_Carnaval-4p endmap map m5p -projection plan Grito_de_Carnaval-5p endmap map mAndar1 -projection plan m3p break m1p [1 4 m] above endmap map mAndar2 -projection plan m4p break mAndar1 [4 7 m] above endmap map mAndar3 -projection plan m5p break mAndar2 [7 10 m] above endmap map mCompleto -projection plan mAndar1 endmap To produce each version I just changed the contents of mCompleto as this is the one actually rendered Level 1: map mCompleto -projection plan mAndar1 endmap Level 2: map mCompleto -projection plan mAndar2 endmap Level 3: map mCompleto -projection plan mAndar3 endmap To better explain my issue, there is a fourth file: the map-connection-issue.jpeg. In Level 3, how can I make the lines pointed with red arrows end at the points marked with the blue arrows (as they do in Level 2) and not at the points marked with the green arrows? Regards, Rodrigo Severo

Legendsymbols - vertical distance between boxes
by Torsten Schnitter 28 Feb '18

28 Feb '18

Hi Can anyone describe how to change the vertical distance between the symbol boxes inside the legend symbols? I asume it should be done somehow within this code (or not?): code tex-map \def\legendsymbolswidth1{18 cm} \def\legendsymbolbox#1#2{ \setbox\tmpboxa=\hbox{\pdfrefxform#1} \setbox\tmpboxb=\hbox{\the\legendtextsize(} \legendsymbolwd=\wd\tmpboxa \legendsymbolht=\ht\tmpboxa \advance\legendsymbolht by -\ht\tmpboxb \advance\legendsymbolht by -1dd \tmpdimen=\hsize \advance\tmpdimen by 10pt \divide\tmpdimen by\legendcolumns \advance\tmpdimen by-10pt \hbox to \tmpdimen{ \box\tmpboxa\kern10pt\raise\legendsymbolht\vtop{ \advance\tmpdimen by -\legendsymbolwd \advance\tmpdimen by -10pt \hsize=\tmpdimen\rightskip=0pt plus \tmpdimen minus 0pt\relax\the\legendtextsize #2\vskip1dd}\hss} } \def\legendsymbols{ \hsize=\legendsymbolswidth1 \formattedlegend } endcode Thanks, Torsten

'can't read "xth(me, cmds, ....": no such element in array' errors
by Rodrigo Severo 24 Feb '18

24 Feb '18

Hi, I trying to work in a topo I make recently. One of the sketches got way bigger than it should and is presenting errors like: can't read "xth(me,cmds,5,18,x)": no such element in array I already reduced the file to something really small and I still get these errors most of the times I try to open it. Any ideas on what could be the cause? I send attached both a small version of the sketch that presents the error and the complete log of the error. Regards, Rodrigo

How to combine two maps
by Bill Gee 19 Feb '18

19 Feb '18

Hello everyone - I am sure someone has come across this problem. I looked all through the Therion Book and the online Wiki, but did not find anything that looked useful. We've been surveying a cave for several years now. It is a tough cave. The map is now a bit over 10,700 feet (3,261 meters). There are several nearby caves that have been getting mapped as time permits. They have been treated as separate projects, each with their own map. Last weekend a human-passable connection was discovered between the big cave and one of the nearby caves. It is only for small humans, but it has been traversed. The centerline survey should be done the next time we go out there. It will only take a few more stations to survey the connection. First question: Is there a way to combine the two maps so that Therion treats them as a single map? I don't want to have to redraw over 300 meters of cave! I suppose I could simply add the th2 files of one cave to the other. Is that the usual method? Second question: We have GPS coordinates of the two entrances. Is it possible to specify both sets in the centerline data? Third question: As I said, there are several smaller caves nearby. It would be useful to have them all displayed on the same printout. Is there a way to tell Therion to import a map and place it on the drawing using GPS coordinates to maintain scale distance? Thanks! -- Bill Gee
