Current Therion for Windows version 13Mar2017
by Bruce Mutton 31 Mar '17

31 Mar '17

I just noticed the recent install files built on 13 March 2017, thanks to Rodrigo’s post. Of course I could not wait to try it out, it’s great to see so many new features and bug fixes. Thank you all. I’ve not delved into it much, but a few comments on how it’s working for me (Windows 10) so far. I installed the new build over ‘5.3.16 Vlad’s beta’ First three runs found three separate bugs by the looks of things, but on subsequent projects it worked better. Run 1 MiddleEarth: Mystery crash, as per screen capture attached. Run 2 BlackSabbath: Everything compiles OK, and I get list.html, pdf, lox and 3d outputs, but the log file has but one line, as per attached log file warning -- error deleting temporary directory -- C:\Users\Bruce\AppData\Local\Temp\th10044 Run 3: Flora: Crashes almost immediately while reading file, complaining about ‘symbol-show point cave-station:fixed’ as per attached log file. This is something that works fine with 5.3.16 ./LayoutMapThisCave.thc [54] -- unknown symbol specification -- point cave-station:fixed writing xtherion file ... done Run 4 onwards on other projects: Mostly OK 😊 Runs 1 to 3 and errors are repeatable on similar projects, and supersets of them. Opening up a variety of th2 drawing files did not show up any problems. Did not try to create files or save changes though. One request, if the new build(s) could have the version identifier in the UI and /thversion variable updated; they still read 5.3.16. Perhaps ‘5.3.16 13Mar2017’ or the like, would help with identifying which version I have active, and from which version pdf outputs were created. Also back in 2013 I put together some symbol-assign’s and metapost for modifying the NZSS symbol set. I’ll need to have a look at those in case I’ve changed my mind, but who could I send those to get them included? Or maybe I should post them here again? Bruce

Loch rotation speed
by Bruce Mutton 31 Mar '17

31 Mar '17

Now this is getting picky I know. Does anyone else find that the Loch rotation speed is about an order of magnitude too fast? Even on my 11 year old Windows XP machine it was way too fast, and it was not possible to make it slow enough to usefully display a complex system, if you were wanting to appreciate it's complexities. I assume it's the same on non-Windows systems. Would it be possible to reset the speed range down by a factor of 10, or 16 or so? On my current machine, the slowest possible rotation speed is about what I would like the maximum possible speed to be. Bruce

Hi, Several users got the error on the image attached when trying to import a JPG image on XTherion on Windows. One single user succeded importing a JPG image on XTherion on Windows. These XTherions were able to import a PNG image. They were all using Therion for Windows available at https://therion.speleo.sk/downloads/therion-setup-dev.exe How can they import JPG images? Projected Elevation Reprojection
by Footleg 20 Mar '17

20 Mar '17

I am just starting to try and draw up my first projected elevations in Therion (only 5 years into the project!). I have found that you cannot reproject an elevation from one bearing onto another (Therion only includes elevation maps containing scraps of the exact same bearing as the export statement). e.g. In my thconfig: export map -projection [elevation 180] -layout local -o ElevEW.pdf My scrap type is set to: elevation 180 If I don't declare the projection in my map, then the map is only included in the export when the bearings match between the export and the scrap. (180 degrees meaning the elevation is a projection looking due South, so the drawing represents a slice through the cave from East to West across the page from left to right. I am drawing the scrap using an extended elevation sketch from PocketTopo which is from a passage which trends approximately due West going downslope. This works OK and the distortion is minimal my elevation comes out looking pretty much like my scrap drawing. [image: TherionElev180.png] But I want to draw my projected elevation sloping down from right to left, as that matches the plan drawing. If I just change the export to [elevation 000] then nothing is output (the map only contains scraps with elevation 180, so the map is not included. If I try to force the map to use -projection [elevation 000] so that it matches the export statement then Therion throws an error saying there is an incompatible projection in my map (because the scrap is elevation 180). Realising that the scrap gets distorted to match the bearing (i.e. I have drawn an extended elevation sketch, but side the scrap is projected at 180), I tried to set the scrap to 'elevation 000'. Afterall, Therion should just distort the drawing to align the stations along on the plane of the projection right? Well sort of. What could be expected to be a simple reversal of the scrap, actually makes quite a mess of it as you can see in the elevation [000] rendering: [image: TherionElev000.png] This looks like a bug in the distortion code. I think the ceiling and floor have been swapped (i.e. Therion has rotated the scrap along a horizontal axis going into the page rather than flipping it left-right. But it has also bent the ceiling and floor lines into some sort of geological folds as well.) Am I missing any tricks here? Do I need to manually try to reproject all my extended elevation sketches onto the projection I want to draw my scraps using, and scan them back in as background sketches? Does anyone know of any tricks to perform the sort of 'horizontal' distortion I need here (i.e. Only moving the pixels of the sketch in the horizontal dimension, not the vertical? I need to learn this inside out so I can write the projected elevations chapter of my tutorial! Footleg

FW: th2 empty objects
by Henry.Bennett＠dell.com 18 Mar '17

Creating LOX files sometimes takes a very long time. One issue appears to be when there are empty objects in a th2 file such as line wall endline In the list archive Martin Sulka refers to a tool (?) that: There is somewhere a grab to find and erase empty objects from th2 files in conference. https://www.mail-archive.com/therion@speleo.sk/msg02978.html Any ideas? colour preview-above unresponsive
by Bruce Mutton 06 Mar '17

06 Mar '17

While we are going through a renaissance of Therion improvements, I'm wondering if anyone is able to look at the colour preview-above functionality? I can make 'colour preview-below' work, but not 'colour preview-above'. colour preview-below 80 #0 = black 100 = white. This works just fine. colour preview-above 80 #seems to be ineffective, and the preview outline remains black. I have a long running statement colour preview-above [80 0 40] #magenta designed to alert me to the moment that this feature is fixed :) Bruce

Re: [Therion] Trying to understand relation between select/unselect and export
by Martin Sluka 04 Mar '17

You are right, Rodrigo, "unselect" doesn't work in any way. Martin On Mar 03, 2017, at 12:59 PM, Rodrigo Severo via Therion <therion(a)speleo.sk> wrote: 2017-03-03 4:52 GMT-03:00 Benedikt Hallinger via Therion <therion(a)speleo.sk>: I do not think this is a bug. The way i understand (and use) is that with select/unselect you can define the data to export for one particular run of the compiler. So you can say "export all of this map, but exclude xyz". I understand your idea but can you present an working example of unselect actually unselecting a map? After Bruce called my attention to the fact that this issue has being dicussed before, I couldn't find an example of unselect making any difference in the final result. Rodrigo However, it would definitely be more comfortable to have it like discussed in this thread below. I have not researched it recently, and my lingering recollection is that it does not work as one might expect. Not sure I have ever managed a successful ‘unselect’. This 2013 post from Andrew Atkinson in response to Bertrand Hauser gives an explanation that seems plausible. https://www.mail-archive.com/therion@speleo.sk/msg04606.html [1] Yes Bruce. I believe you are right. I will try some little debugging on Therions code to see if I understand why thats happening. I dont think thats by design, it looks like a bug to me. select/unselect It doesn't work in this way too: source select_unselect.th select nacrt_12.map@select_unselect unselect scrap1@select_unselect export map -o select_unselect_1.pdf There is not any difference between compilation with line unselect or commented unselect. m.
